OT: Next Baylor HC

Submitted by goblue1213 on
With the "suspension of Art Briles with intent to terminate" one of my friends and I started discussing potential replacements. We came up with 2 names that we felt were pretty solid options. First: Tom Herman, Houston Urban disciple. He only has one year of experience as a HC, but Briles came from the high-school ranks. He's great on offense, connects with the young guys, and he's already in Texas so he understands the state. Second: Chad Morris. Was a trendy name for a couple HC openings a few years ago. He knows how o put out a high-octane offense. The offenses he had at Clemson. He hasn't had a ton of success in a short time as a HC, but he is still someone who Had been highly thought of. He's from Texas, and went to school at A&M so he knows the state. What does the board think?

Singletary was one of the names floated by sports radio talking heads here in Oklahoma.  They suggested the most likely scenario will be a one-year coach until there's a clearer picture of any NCAA sanctions or other ramifications.  They also mentioned that at the last Big 12 coaches meeting, Briles was sitting in a corner by himself while everyone else was chatting.

My sense is that Tom Herman is waiting for either the Texas job or the Ohio State job to open up. Baylor isn't enough of an upgrade over Houston (especially with all of the talk about Houston being considered for Big 12 membership).

If Malzahn continues to tank, I'd bet Auburn would be a possible landing spot too. Auburn can contend for titles every year with the right coach.

I don't think OSU is on Herman's radar unless Meyer decides to leave after next year for whatever reason. I don't see that job opening up anytime soon.

Baylor will have to hire either a current D1 coordinator or a FCS HC looking to make the leap. Nobody like Herman will be willing to leave their current situation for the toxicity of Waco right now. I could see a guy like Hoke going there. Squeaky clean is just what BU needs.

Hoke declined to be forthright to the press, possibly under directive from his AD. The player's investigation was in no way interfered with by him or other officials, and in fact was pursued with a zeal that some found controversial.

Briles supervised a regime in which investigations were actively suppressed and victims were retaliated against on multiple occasions.

I don't think these things are on the same planet. You might not, either, but the wording of your post suggests that you think they're in the same category. I would agree that this might give Baylor pause, since publicity is an issue, but the way the thought comes out is an issue.

Recruiting is indeed a problem.

Good point. You're right in that Hoke was just incompetent and clueless whereas Briles actively sought to cover up shit.

I guess my point is that Baylor will probably be looking for someone with a totally unblemished record (kind of like how Nixon appointed Ford as his VP to replace Spiro Agnew because the Watergate scandal was in full swing at the time and he needed someone who was ethically beyond reproach). I may have been overstating the case in describing Hoke's handling of the Gibbons situation as Briles-esque, but I think it's enough of a blemish to scare off the Baylor brass if they're serious about overhauling the culture within their football program.

The players at Baylor don't have the blinding loyalty that Penn State players had. They've already lost a top recruit, more will come. Current players will leave. That job is a landmine.

I think Mike Leach would be a good hire for Baylor. Not sure if he'd go, though. He has the offensive mind to use the weapons on their roster effectively.

Amazing how far Baylor has come that they are going to be able to snag a pretty damn good coach to replace that scumbag. They were in the same level as rice for years.

There's no way Tom Herman would choose Baylor when both Texas and Texas A&M will probably be firing their coaches, and Herman's probably on the shortlist for both of them (I think he's Texas' best realistic option, while Texas A&M has him at #2 behind Larry Fedora)

I agree with the posters underneath me, Bob Stitt would be perfect at Baylor in some capacity, whether it be as head coach or as offensive coordinator.

Baylor by its own admission has violated Title IX egregiously and repeatedly. If they dont get some form of death penalty,  which they should when coupled with the murder coverup by thier basketball team a decade ago, thier program will be hammered with sanctions and loss of scholarships to the point where no upwardly mobile coach will accept the job. And these sanctions wont be lifted for no apparent reason like they were at PSU. PSU >>>>>Baylor in the eyes of the NCAA. Baylor will return to the dregs of college football if they even field a team in the future.

Depends on the sanctions handed down. If they're crippling sanctions, and given the situation they probably should be, no good coach in his right mind will come within 100 miles of that school. Baylor is not like PSU where it can still fall back on being a traditional power with a huge fan base with a stupid amount of resources as a selling point.

Baylor was nothing before Briles showed up, and there's a very real chance Baylor will go back to being nothing in the coming years. Couple this with the fact that unless they'll be allowed to have an interim staff for the upcoming year, they're in an extremely awkward position for hiring a new head man right now. All schools are done with spring practice and getting ready for Fall Camp, and the NFL is just starting up OTA's. They may need to dip into the FCS or D-II ranks and hope some up and coming hotshot is willing to take a chance.

Unless they get away with murder on the upcoming sanctions, they're not getting a Tom Herman kind of guy. And even then, they likely don't have the kind of cache to lure in that type of coach. Especially not if a school like Auburn, PSU, or Texas comes calling.

They have too much money tied up into facilities to let it go back to Rice-level quality.  Maybe they open the checkbook for Mack Brown and have the appearance of being squeaky clean?
