OT One step closer to Futurama. Hyperloop test
Very cool and exciting test. Granted, what it would take to make it viable for human transportation still needs to be figured out, but rail for cargo could all but be eliminated.

You're not going to get people on a train that has 2.4Gs of acceleration. Even transporting stuff... that's nuts.
Reaching the top speed graudally? sure. But that seems like a big problem for me
Extreme G forces are cool, what could go wrong....
Do you drive in cars or fly in planes? Cause those don't go 700+ mph but still can kill you. You'll either sit and watch as the world flies by you or you'll get over your irrational fear
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The RockinRoll coaster at Disney accelerates at 4.5gs. I can definitely see how there would be concerns (especially with elderly and young), but the speeds listed aren't really out of the realm of possibility.
The Model S Ludicrous mode gets you 1G of acceleration. You've seen the reaction videos. No way can you do 2.4G with people in a transportation setting. Also it's interesting that they haven't invented brakes yet...
I have a 5 year old and a wife who lives and breathes it. I'm also in Atlanta which makes getting to Disney entirely too easy. I agree with you though. We're doing a 4 day trip in a couple weeks and I could easily find a better way to spend a couple grand.

2.4 Gs is high but not insane. A commercial aircraft peak g-force is maybe 1.5. A Ferrari's ~ 1. And, the peak acceleration could of course be limited to whatever is determined to be acceptable. Furthermore, the number reported here is all but meaningless to us since this is an open-air test (not vacuum) and this is just the propulsion system/carriage, i.e., there is no payload (mass).

Correct. Elon basically said "I don't see a reason this can't be done. Hey smart people, I challenge you to do it."
Musk doesn't have a goal of making a profit.
It's bilking the government and investors -- and making really expensive, flamable trinkets.
Or a buyer when this gets off the ground a bit more
I get so jacked reading about this thing.
People have been kicking it around for a while, but I'll be interested in seeing the thing in action. The real thing, in the vacuum tube, not whatever this test was.
Question for those smarter than me....
Could something like this go faster than the speed of sound without generating a shockwave, since it's operating in a vacuum?
So basically, you have a question for everyone else on MGoBlog?
BOOM! FUCK YEAH!! Day, complete...
/adds FauxMo to "the list"
I see this as sort of a Nixon thing. The List now includes "FauxMo," "The Media," and the "Liberal New England Leftist Intellectual Elite."
Germans, Russians, soybean farmers, dentists, several people I went to high school with, and the guy that invented pantyhose.
There would be no shockwaves from this setup due to no medium of propagation of the wave (air).
Interestingly, I tried to search this online to confirm this and the closest thing I could find of a shockwave that would be similar to breaking the speed of sound was when the Earth passes through solar wind it creates shockwaves due to their being some propagation medium, even if it's too small for us to feel. Explosions would create pressure shockwaves of a sort in a vacuum, but not the same as breaking the speed of sound.
For some reason, it made me think of Airplane II - "Some of you might experience a slight metabolic change..."
"Some of you might experience a temporary metabolic change..."
They might get more funding and government cooperation if they started in Vegas and went to LA. I'm sure the casinos would kick in some for that route.
I would guess Houston to Dallas would be the first place they would try it. The terrain is flat and taxes are cheap.
That might make more sense than running over a bunch of known fault lines.
I am down with anything when the name of the CTO is Brogan BamBrogan.

Granted I didn't think the Warriors would get 73 wins, but I'm even more confident that this will never transport a large number of people at a profit.

with a spinning wheel. No one knows how he got it and danged if he knows how to use it....The Springfield Monorail!
Heh heh. Mule.
This could ruin future generations' ability to join the mile high club.
Really? When have you been on a plane last? Like anyone has the chance to join it anymore.
Tighter seating arrangements are sexy.
