If you were wary of Hoke as a stand-alone DC but also know he might not go back to a DL coach (kind of a big leap down from HC of Michigan to DL at another FBS school), you could call Hoke a co-DC with an emphasis on the front 7 or you could call him associate HC / DL coach

Is an offense guy, may as well hire him, sign him to a lucrative 10 year contract, and fire him in 2 years, so we have another team to rip on for another decade.

There is some precedent that RR would at least give him an interview--RR did interview Brady once before.

A week after taking the gig, Brafy was interviewed by some TV panel of talking heads. RR was on that panel. The man who just got fired from the job had to adk on-air questions of the man who replaced him. Awwwwkwarrrrd.

Good for him. I doubt he'll ever be an RPS winning DC but he should be able to put together a structurally sound defense. Plus it will be an opportunity for him to learn about the value of fast tempo offense.

revealed a side of Michigan fans I hadn't previously known (except for the tales from older boosters about Carr).  It's ugly and it persists.  Hoke began the rebuild of the program and handed Harbaugh a pretty damn good defense and roster.  Isn't that enough for some here to shut their mouths, tip their hat or wish him well?

Hoke is good DL coach and maybe a good HC at a lower level conference, but I just do not see him as a DC.

To say Hoke starting the rebuilding is simply not fair to RR. Hoke's only good season is with a roster handed to him by RR.

So in return he should get some credit for the roster that we have this year...Outside of Rudock all of the major contributors from this team were recruited by and signed to play with Hoke. Furthermore most ppl seem to forget that most DC's used to be position coaches so why is it so far fetched to think that Hoke couldn't handle it.

handed him was also led in a big way by a few Carr recruits.  Regardless, you surely can't argue that he inherited a better roster than what Harbaugh has.  Or maybe you can.  I guess I just think the snide remarks about Hoke are classless.  He's a good man who had a better than .500 record at Michigan who brought a lot of talent to Ann Arbor.  I respect him for that.

For some yes, but expecting everyone to see it that way is irrational. Welcome to the world we live in. Haters gonna hate is a common saying used these days. They're everywhere.

Brady was given his dream job and gave it his all to try and make the team successful. It didn't work out. He shoulders a lot of the blame, but not all of it. He's been a head coach at three different programs and he's had some success at all his stops. He clearly has a solid reputation amongst the coaching fraternity. I think he's probably qualified to coordinate a defense and I hope he's a success. He deserves it.

Hoke being a candidate for a DC job at Oregon is obviously unbelievable and it doesn't appear it was actually reported anywhere either.

In all seriousness I think this would be a very poor hire. Hoke has never shown the ability to make adjustments and I don't think he would be great at gameplanning.

Shouldn't this only be thread worthy if he actually get the job? Are we really going to have a thread for all 200 jobs he is considered a candidate for over the next few years?

I would absolutely want Brady Hoke to coach defensive line and coordinate recruiting. Despite the failings of his Michigan head coaching tenure he's extremely good at recruiting and coaching defense.

Dislike Hoke all you want.  He is clearly qualified to be a major Div-1 DC.  Will he be GREAT?  Dunno, but he's clearly QUALIFIED.

Some of the jokes about Hoke are unfortunate, but I don't think many Michigan fans dislike him -- quite the opposite, actually.

As to his qualifications, sure, but we can drill down a bit more than that.  We know he's a very good recruiter, that he knows football quite well, that he's very well liked by everyone he works with, and that he doesn't play dirty.  We also know that his management style is to delegate, that he does not prefer to call plays, and I think most of us can agree that he has relatively poor to poor situational awareness.  That, to me, means this job would be a terrible fit for him.  I could see him as head coach of a good but non-elite program and I could see him as a defensive position coach at an elite program or even an NFL team.  Oregon DC would play to his weaknesses.

My guess is that this rumor is primarily agent-driven, as in Oregon called to gauge interest and his agent is putting it out there to keep his name in the discussion for more suitable roles.  If you want to get the girl, it never hurts to let her know the hot girls might also be interested.

He's actually a pretty decent defensive coach. He's never held the title of defensive coordinator at the college level, but he's been around defense his entire career and has handled defensive playcalling duties enough to be qualified for a DC role. The biggest strike against him for the Oregon job is his well-documented disdain for the spread offense, which he once derisively referred to as "basketball on grass".

He did coach at Oregon State so he knows the state and he has recruiting ties on the West Coast, so there's that. Still, I doubt he gets this job.

Hoke has a good eye for recruiting defensive talent, and with the resources Oregon has, he'll get some well-paid, qualified assistants around him, not just nepotistic buddies, and do well I think.

To me the biggest weakness with Hoke is that he's just not well-rounded.  He's a defensive mind almost 100%.   I think he should really attend some of the offensive seminars and clinics by other coaches (Bobby Stoops, Tom Herman) and improve his knowledge set a little bit on the offensive side.

Will he be as good as Nick Aliotti was for 17 years? That's a tough act for any lifelong position coach to follow.

As for moving out to Oregon, there are far worse and less beautiful places on the planet to relocate your family and live your life.   The midwest is great, but the west is the best in my humble opinion.

= wrong.  The guy started in the dark ages of this program and had some early success by...wait for it...building a defense.

Obviously he didn't deliver long-term stability.  But I do believe he understands the game, especially the defensive side of the ball.

Would a defensive line full of big guys work out against those Oregon-style RBs and receivers who have legs going like a windmill?  I can't say.  It might be a huge coup, or a drastic fail.  But I will say from watching them this year that their LBs and DL seemed to lack the mass we are used to in the B1G.  I forget who I was watching but it looked like the LBs were getting shredded by (forget the opponent) on standard between-the-tackles running.

That Hoke worked for Jack Harbaugh for several years, and for coaches Moeller & Carr for 7 years, says enough to me.  It didn't work out here as a HC but I respect the guy and what he was up against.  Similarly nobody is trashing Bump Elliott for a 50-42 overall record during the 1960s.

People incessantly bash Hoke because he was a terrible coach at Michigan. He had one great season with RR's players. As those players left in the subsequent years, his win totals fell precipitously. His final two years were probably the most boring and frustrating years I have ever experienced watching Michigan football. His last year was an epic train wreck and made Michigan a national laughingstock. Everyone says that he was a nice guy (and perhaps he is, I never met the man) but I never got that impression nor did most Michigan fans based on what we saw from him during press conferences and in other media appearances. To me and others, he came across as a bumbling idiot to be honest.

He also never really took the blame for his shortcomings. He was never obligated to explain his tenure at Michigan and why he failed, but I think it would have given some of his critics closure and they would have moved on. Instead, he just faded away like a statue as Brian once put it. I think he gave a brief statement once he was fired and then we never heard anything from him again. Once we finally did, he was saying stuff like "he should have gotten 6 seasons" and "I would have gone for it" in reference to the MSU game. He had oppurtunities to endear himself to the Michigan fanbase following his firing but he has chosen not to do so.

Also, the man banked close to $14M during his tenure at Michigan so I think he couldn't care less about what anonymous posters have to say about him. That's more than 99% of the posters here will ever make in our lifetimes. If he is smart with his money, he never has to work again in his life.

Lastly, one point I would like to make in the RR vs. Hoke debate and why people seem to be more critical of Hoke than RR. Let's be clear, both failed at Michigan. But in my opinion, there is the sentiment that the RR era was cut short a year too soon. We will never know how the 2011 team would have performed under RR. I don't think Michigan would have won 11 games and for that I give Hoke credit. He hired Mattison who turned the defense around over night. I do think Michigan would have won 8-9 games though and produced an electric offense with a veteran Denard at QB.

We never got to see that though and there will forever be a "what if" associated with the RR era. Instead, we got the Hoke era, which ran its full course. There is a sense of completeness about it. There is no doubt about what happened. It's over.
