Well the fact that he was HC for 4 years makes that irrelevant. Many DL coaches become DCs anyway.
January 7th, 2016 at 12:21 PM ^
I'm fairly surprised no NFL team has snagged him as a DL coach. Hoke can flat-out develop defensive linemen.

But isn't the difference that Harbaugh participates in the scheme and playcalling of the offense while Hoke is more of a hands off, CEO type who lets the coordinators do their own thing?

I dunno, it could be that as a CEO-type HC he knows he has to hire good coordinators. That'd be the point of being that kind of coach.
I wasn't insulting him, I was genuinely giving a reason as to why the two situations would probably be different. I'm sure Hoke has input into both the offense and the defense, but its different from a guy like Harbaugh.
January 7th, 2016 at 3:13 PM ^
On the offensive side of the ball he was a delegator, but I'm not sure I'd say that about the defensive side.
January 7th, 2016 at 11:45 AM ^
In all seriousness this would probably be a great career move for him. I can think of no better way for him to be forced to understand tempo than to coach against it every day in practice
January 7th, 2016 at 7:10 PM ^
Or maybe he'll step in and change the way they practice on the defensive side of the ball. A little less obsession with tempo, more attention to detail, getting it right before you get it fast.
Something they're doing there now isn't working; they need someone from the outside to come in and tell them what it is.

This makes a lot of sense for Oregon. They don't play a lot of Defense anyway...but now they can build character in their program
January 7th, 2016 at 11:49 AM ^
move for him if he is selected. I didn't realize Oregon made a change at DC. Their DC was one of their best recruiters.
Hail.

What a joke. I'd hire a real DC then hire Hoke to be the DL coach. He has proven that he can recruit pretty well and coach up a mean DL. Don't take the guy outside his comfort zone.
January 7th, 2016 at 11:53 AM ^
There were plenty of head coaching jobs out there and no one hired him. Even Ball State had an opening and hired Mike Neu. Hoke's days as a head coach might be over.
PS-Rocky Long has done well with SDSU since Hoke left. They went 11-3 this year, including an 8-0 conference record.

Over/under for "Deerrr Duuurrr will he wear headphones? Deerrrrrr" comments in this thread? I'm going for... 5.

Seems rich to talk about wearing out jokes from the guy who kept the "Al Borges is a good coordinator" schtick going for what seemed a decade or ten.

Oh, so you can still find old jokes funny, but no one else can?
Hypocrite. Elitist. Hope the view's nice from your ivory tower.
BTW, the reason people bag on Hoke is because he was handed this job on a silver platter and failed miserably, played lackey to Dave Brandon for four years, didn't display an ounce of backbone in public whenever it was necessary and then this year proceeded to make numerous dumb comments regarding the football team. And that's without getting into anything to specific. I suspect there will be comments directed at Hoke for years and a lot of them are well-deserved.
I know you still have it in your skull that he's a rotund, jolly Jesus, but he's not.

Upvoted soley based on rotund, jolly Jesus.

Ugh, nothing is worse than someone who doesn't get the joke.
And let's be real, REALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL clear. I rarely bag on Hoke - look at this thread! Where is the bagging outside of this little convo?! - but he bought himself five years of scorn when he claimed "I would have went for it" after the Sparty game.
Those are the words of a man who deserves five years of clap gifs and headset jokes.
January 7th, 2016 at 3:11 PM ^
You were one of the biggest baggers on Hoke that I remember -- and I do remebmer because I was probably the last one standing in his corner
January 7th, 2016 at 3:12 PM ^
Sure, while he was here and in the aftermath. But I rarely post about him these days. And I'd say I almost never make clap/headset jokes.
January 7th, 2016 at 3:18 PM ^
Not sure you should be calling out other posters for being overly attached to fired coordinators, given the amount of love you were showing Jeff Casteel the other day. Even RichRod's had enough of that guy.

this should include complaining about mgoblog...

He could be interviewing for the D Line coach.
January 7th, 2016 at 11:51 AM ^
January 7th, 2016 at 11:52 AM ^
So what? He's been a HC before and was an excellent D-Line coach. Don't most DC's start out as position coaches?
I'd say he's probably well qualified to be a DC. Especially at a school where defense was optional in the past.
January 7th, 2016 at 12:05 PM ^
I think he'd do great at DC.
January 7th, 2016 at 11:54 AM ^
For me, this move is not so much Hoke going from HC to DC. Instead, I'm looking at this as a great DL coach being promoted into a DC position. It happens all the time.
Good luck, coach Hoke!
January 7th, 2016 at 11:55 AM ^
If the Oregon interview doesn't pan out there is a school about 1000 miles SSE of Eugene that is also looking for a DC.
January 7th, 2016 at 11:55 AM ^
Hoke is a great recruiter and D line coach. No evidence if he is a good DC or not, but his defenses and D-lines were always good. The guy obviously has the knowledge.
January 7th, 2016 at 11:57 AM ^
this means that Hoke will be the world's best defensive coach now. He probably will get hired by Rodriguez instead.
January 7th, 2016 at 12:06 PM ^
Gerg and Borges at SJSU....
Hoke and Rodriguez at Arizona....
Good Lord, could MGoBlog handle it?
January 7th, 2016 at 12:26 PM ^
For multiple reasons (entertainment among them) that *really* needs to happen. D-line is a longstanding RichRod weakness (recruiting and all else). Brady could help fix that and enjoy the Arizona weather.
January 7th, 2016 at 1:15 PM ^
God, what if they won the PAC-12....everyone's preconceived notions about everything would be shattered forever
January 7th, 2016 at 7:00 PM ^
But I can easily imagine Borges and Hoke together again somewhere down the line.

I'd love to see Hoke in green and yellow trying to explain the newest in dry-tech-snug-fit clothing technology at Oregon on one of their mgoblue equivalent videos. Seems like he'd be a fish out of water there (not intending that to be in a mean way - I just imagine it being totally out of Hoke's zone)

How far of a walk is it?
January 7th, 2016 at 12:08 PM ^
They should hire him as a DL coach with a focus on recruiting. He was a great recruiter and did great at getting/coaching SDE, DT, and NT types.
