EDIT: some info on his track record:

Year School S&P rank FEI rank
2015 BC 3 5
2014 BC 36 68
2013 BC 80 98
2012 UConn 38 22
2011 UConn 34 23
2010 Maryland 36 20
2009 Maryland 44 64

Sam Webb confirms:

Multiple sources saying Boston College def. coordinator Don Brown to #Michigan is true. Word from a BC player is Brown informed team already

The mind behind Boston College's defense? I could live with that.

One question I have then, as I did not watch more than a handful of BC games this season - is Brown a 3-4 guy per the prediction made in a thread probably five or six days ago? I ask because I still think we could cobble a 3-4 together with this roster, but like everyone else, the LBs sort of concern me.

He was at BC last two years.

BCS total defense ranking:

2015: 1

2014: 11

I'll have to look at how his Maryland defenses fared.

What's even more impressive about his BC rankings is that the BC offense was HORRIBLE so the defense was on the field more often.

UConn total defense with Brown:

2012: 5

2011: 32

Maryland:

2010: 44

2009: 69

He improves defense's rankings everywhere he's been. Dude seems legit with that and the fact Harbaugh wants him.

And he's 60, and been a DC for the last 6 years. So he probably isn't going to have the longest line for HC ops, so I imagine he'll be at UM a while.

I saw him close up coach UMass 2004-2008 and BC. UMass had its best years and defense was their strength. This is a great hire. He gets more out of his players than any other coach I have seen. By the way, UMass had pretty good recruiting classes under him too.

Like the hire. But a question to someone more informed than me about BC Eagles football:

How much of BC's excellent defensive ranking can be attributed to opposing offenses playing a tad bit more conservative due to the fact that they know BC couldn't do much of anything on offense?

Typically playing conservative means running more and passing less. Boston college had the best run defense in the country. They gave up something ridiculous like 80 yds/game, including holding Dalvin Cook to 54 yards on 15 carries. So I'd ascertain that it had very little to do with the other teams playing ultra-conservatively.

What a slam dunk hire .. A great do coordinator and top notch from an academic standpoint. Look at his resume academically .. He's coached at Yale, Dartmouth, Brown, UMASS, Boston College

IICR There were rumors of Zordich following Durkin. If that is true, Partridge could stay a position coach and Brown DC and DB coach. Above it was mentioned that Brown coached DBs at UConn.

Really not sure how I feel about this.  I get the sense that we're hiring someone who had one really, really, really good year at BC with mediocre talent, but a lot of middling, so-so years before that.  He's also 60.

I'll be happy to be wrong, but I'm certainly not ecstatic like everyone else here.
