Sam Webb confirms:
Multiple sources saying Boston College def. coordinator Don Brown to #Michigan is true. Word from a BC player is Brown informed team already

IIRC, Thayer Evans was the guy the NCAA (rightfully) made fun of for that Oklahoma State story that did not pan out at all. So wait for someone with a decent track record.

Like Sam Webb, who confirms:

He did coach LBs too at BC for the last couple years.

His defense described as "organized chaos" by the Washington Post according to Wikipedia. Only concern is that of his 33 years in coaching, only 2 came outside of New England (Maryland 09-10). National recruiting may not be his strong suit.

I would not worry about recruiting.

Elite defense, absolutely putrid offense. Like, hiring Brady Hoke as the OC would have improved their offense.

The Washington Post described Brown's scheme as "organized chaos" and "blitzing nearly 85 percent of the time." Highly touted junior safety Kenny Tate emerged as a playmaker, and Brown praised his play at "virtually every position on the field" as "unbelievable". Brown was credited with preparing the team well for the 2010 Military Bowl, where Maryland beat the 12th-ranked offense of East Carolina, 51–20.
Was East Carolina a spread team?

Organized chaos? Great scheme!

That was a Lincoln Riley coordinated team, I think, so yes.

And also a surprising one. His name was thrown around earlier, and while he has the best defense in the country, he's also a 65 year old who only spent time on the East Coast.
Also, this is now relevant to our interests: http://www.footballstudyhall.com/2015/12/15/10115630/how-boston-college-eagles-built-a-top-5-defense

at math. You are correct.

Or so I've been told.

He was also the interim baseball coach at Yale in 1992. From what I have just been frantically reading words like "old school" and "tough but fair" keep coming up. His players really seem to love him.
But perhaps the best thing about Don Brown is that it appears he favors a moustache.
My initial impression is a great get.

Big 'stache/Jordan gear

I'm so glad someone else found this gem on Wikipedia. He was sitting there coordinating his defense, and just popped into coaching baseball with as far as I can tell no experience. Which sounds like something out of the 1890s. (He won the conference and a game in the NCAA tournament too).

He was also DC/DB coach at UConn in 2012 (which was Warde Manuel's first year as AD).

who are you going to fire to make that happen? We're already at the NCAA limit
December 20th, 2015 at 4:37 PM ^
Remember last year, when we had a decent defense that was crippled by an offense that left it out to dry?
BC's offense was execrable. They couldn't win any games.
And yet STILL they had the best defense in the country. That's astonishing.
Do they have a bunch of draft picks? I don't think so. I think he's a good coach. One of the best if this year is an indication, which makes this potentially an amazing hire.

Mattison took one of the worst defenses in the entire country and turned it into what it is today by making massive strides every single year. His position group is regarded by basically everyone as the best part of the defense. The team and AD thought highly enough of him that he was the one guy retained by Harbaugh -- something even the untouchable Fred Jackson couldn't manage.
Mattison is more responsible for this year's excellent D than Durkin.
