One interesting thing of note is that this will be the furthest west he has coached - having been at Uconn, BC, Umass, Yale, and several other places.

IIRC, Thayer Evans was the guy the NCAA (rightfully) made fun of for that Oklahoma State story that did not pan out at all.  So wait for someone with a decent track record.

His defense described as "organized chaos" by the Washington Post according to Wikipedia. Only concern is that of his 33 years in coaching, only 2 came outside of New England (Maryland 09-10). National recruiting may not be his strong suit.

The Washington Post described Brown's scheme as "organized chaos" and "blitzing nearly 85 percent of the time." Highly touted junior safety Kenny Tate emerged as a playmaker, and Brown praised his play at "virtually every position on the field" as "unbelievable". Brown was credited with preparing the team well for the 2010 Military Bowl, where Maryland beat the 12th-ranked offense of East Carolina, 51–20.

Was East Carolina a spread team?

He was also the interim baseball coach at Yale in 1992. From what I have just been frantically reading words like "old school" and "tough but fair" keep coming up. His players really seem to love him.

But perhaps the best  thing about Don Brown is that it appears he favors a moustache.

My initial impression is a great get.

I'm so glad someone else found this gem on Wikipedia.  He was sitting there coordinating his defense, and just popped into coaching baseball with as far as I can tell no experience.  Which sounds like something out of the 1890s. (He won the conference and a game in the NCAA tournament too).

Remember last year, when we had a decent defense that was crippled by an offense that left it out to dry?

BC's offense was execrable. They couldn't win any games.

And yet STILL they had the best defense in the country. That's astonishing.

Do they have a bunch of draft picks? I don't think so. I think he's a good coach. One of the best if this year is an indication, which makes this potentially an amazing hire.

Take Mattison's recruiting ability away, and what has he done at his time here? Yeah, he was awesome for a minute, but in the grand scheme of things the D faulted a lot under him. And he can still recruit while being just an assistant if he's willing to be. I love this move of getting someone else!

Mattison took one of the worst defenses in the entire country and turned it into what it is today by making massive strides every single year. His position group is regarded by basically everyone as the best part of the defense. The team and AD thought highly enough of him that he was the one guy retained by Harbaugh -- something even the untouchable Fred Jackson couldn't manage.

Mattison is more responsible for this year's excellent D than Durkin.

He made a terrible defense good, NOT great, and then plateaued with them. Obviously good defense>bad defense.... But he never showed anything more than that. Maybe he would've, maybe he wouldn't have this year, but in my opinion is rather give someone new a shot.
