Jake Butt is 50/50 on NFL

Submitted by dnak438 on

Jake Butt expects to decide his NFL future in the next week or so. Says he's 50/50. Needs to get Harbaugh's input.

He needs Jake Long's input. If my memory is correct, Jake convinced Taylor Lewan to stay for his final year. Emphasizing the unique joy of college life/experience.

There is also the Team, the Team, the Team, and you certainly want to improve you blocking skills before hitting the NFL.

On the otherhand, if you want to get paid now, I don't blame you. Best of luck to you either way young man!

Why would he go in the first 3 rounds?  Because Maxx Williams went in the 2nd round last year, and in my opinion Jake is better, or at least comparable.

He could cement himself as the greatest TE in Michigan history with one more year.

Butt receptions: 89
Career record: 132 (Jack Clancy)

Butt yards: 1,066
Career record: 1,919 (Jack Clancy)

Buttdowns: 7
Career record: 15 (Jerame Tuman)

That's crazy to think about. If he goes 6 catches for 80 yards and a butt down against Florida then he will be:
37 receptions away, 3 a game next year. Easy
773 yards away, 60 yards a game next year. Medium
7 butt downs away, 1 every other game next year. Medium.

My biggest concern is at a blocking level for Butt. He is serviceable in college, doubt he would be at the next level. One more year to sure that up would do him well. But if teams want to take him in the first 3 rounds this year, nothing wrong with that!

Clearly he's ready for the NFL. Selfishly I want him to come back. He could go down as one of the catalysts that fully turned Michigan around if he comes back but has done enough to prove he's worthy of a top 3 rounds selection.

They have one guy OL playing TE (Pettigrew).
They have a WR, who can't block, playing TE (Ebron*).

There were multiple runs in the Packer game where if Ebron remembers to block or even remember it's a running play, not a passing play, Abdullah gets some yards and continues a drive.  Mentally, that guy still doesn't get it.

If I'm Butt, I leave if I can be a 1-3rd round draft pick.  He's already had one injury, so why risk it.  But if he needs another year to polish his run blocking to leave no doubt in NFL eyes, then come on back.

Don't blame him one iota if he leaves and probably won't affect his pro career negatively. However his greatest weakness is blocking which can be greatly improved if he sticks around for 1 more year. I think is overall pro career will be better if he spends 1 more year in college learning the finer points of the position, but probably will not change how much money he ends up making. Tough decision for him.

He's great as a receiver but he'll get eaten up as a blocker, and teams aren't going to be happy if he can't hold up. I'm fine if he leaves because he's been very good, but if he can improve as a blocker even a bit it could give him a much better grade.

I am for whatever is best for Jake.  If he is a certain 1st rounder, then he should leave no doubt.  He already has had one ACL and he would be risking a certain financial future if he is a 1st rounder and passes it up to play college.  The money is too great these days to ignore.  I said the same thing about McGary going to the NBA.

If Butt goes, then I suspect Ian Bunting and Hill will step up and take greater roles in the passing game along with Wheatleys son if he stays at TE.  Michigan will be fine at TE either way.

Using 2015 draft numbers:

Let's say this year he gets drafted mid- round 3:that gets you around $600,000.

If he waits a year, and jumps to a first round pick, even #32 overall, he gets ~$1.4MM.

So the question is this: how much farther up the board does he think Harbaugh can take him? If he thinks his ceiling is somewhere in the first round, it makes sense, even from an immediate* money standpoint, to wait a year.

*immediate in this case, of course, meaning within the next two years.

CBS has Butt ranked as their top TE prospect in this year's draft. Usually when you're the top pick at a position, you go because you don't know where you'll be next year. Next year there's a chance he could move up in overall draft position, but there's more of a chance IMO that he could be knocked off the position as the top TE prospect in the class. As others has mentioned, a TE can only go so high in the draft and the ones who go in the top half of the first round are very rare. If Butt would go in the second round this year, it's much more of a risk with little reward to not go. There's always personal reasons to do something else, but from a draft position perspective, he be crazy not to go so he can move up at most a round next year.

MLive ran an article suggesting Wormley is considering going pro too.  To be honest, Butt should probably leave, so should Lewis.  Wormley and Henry should stay.
