In retrospect: Do you wish OSU had beat MSU, or no?

Submitted by StephenRKass on

So, now that the regular season is over, do you wish OSU had beat MSU, or that things stay just as they happened?

For me personally, OSU is the real rival and enemy. Their schadenfreude at losing in Columbus, and not having a shot at the NC, and having Meyer's string of conference victories broken, is sweet enough. It is hard choosing between OSU and MSU. How could you want either team to win? But for me, not living in Michigan, not dealing with Sparty regularly, and not wanting OSU to even have the opportunity at another NC, trumps hatred for Sparty. Maybe it is personal, because I have in-laws who are OSU fans.

Nonetheless, I think that the Spartans are likely to be beaten sometime in the next month. And I believe that with Harbaugh's recruiting acumen, we will right the ship in terms of MSU quickly. OSU will be a harder nut to crack, and at this point, I am happy for anyone to beat them.

p.s.  Some think that if OSU had beaten MSU, Michigan might have snuck up and beat OSU. I personally think that is delusional, and that OSU would have been prepared for Michigan regardless of the outcome the week prior.

No. Absolutely not. I'm very happy in retrospect that OSU lost to MSU. I don't hear a word about MSU where I live, but it's certainly all OSU, all of the time. This at least took a little wind out of their sails...for a week, anyway. Now, of course, they are almost just as obnoxious -- but it'd be far worse around here if they were sitting undefeated right now, and far worse still when they absolutely rolled Iowa.

My answer would very likely be different if I lived in Michigan.

So, I'm OK with it. Now that said, go Iowa.

Absolutely.  OSU beating MSU would have meant The Game was for the B1G East.  Even if we get our butts kicked it is better to be playing for a championship.

and still do. Obviously painful to see OSU and Urban have success. However, it's worse, imo, to deal with classless Sparty fans. I have always cringed at the "little brother" moniker, from the time it came out of Mike Hart's mouth....but, gezzus, they constantly live up to it. When their immediate action after the winning field goal was to sprint and taunt OSU fans (as opposed to a normal response of celebrating with their team) was just confirmation of that status.

Try to imagine a world where Sparty gets to the playoff and somehow wins a National Championship. The specter of what life would be like for years, for eternity, is enough to make me wish it had no possibility of happening. And it does have a possibility of happening.

OSU going to the playoff and competing for/winning the NC is a wound that has thrice healed over and scarred, such that living with another one would be child's play in comparison.

Sauron already reigns, would I want Saruman the Green and White to ascend next to him? No.

If OSU beating MSU could have prevented that, I'm all for it.

From an economic perspective, the NCAA has to be hoping for MSU to lose.  Their fans cannot even fill their own stadium.  What will happen if MSU plays in the playoff and the ratings take a plunge and the Spartys cannot fill their ticket allotment.

I don't know anyone who went to or roots for OSU anymore. However my MSU friends have been insufferable. Absolutely beyond called for. I don't engage in trash talking much at all and even sent a congratulatory text to my MSU friends when they beat Penn St. But they are relentless in the amount of shit they are talking at me. They grew up Michigan fans and then became MSU fans either by going to college there, marrying a woman who did, or just deciding to root for State because they are good. I would love it if this would stop. Losing to Ohio State would have helped probably.

IMO The MSU/OSU game had a huge effect on our teams pysche. Heres why- i cant find anyone else who heard this but i saw it in the postgame presser at Penn State. Harbuagh said " we are going to play for a championship" in his mind MSU was already going to lose to osu. He said this before the start of their game.

All throughout the week players were asked if the steam that was let out from this game because osu lost? They replied with their typical answers- no still a big game ect. ect. I really think harbs had this team believing they were going to play fo rthe BTCG appearence vs. OSU.

If you have ever played sports and been in a game like this no matter how hard you try and convince yourself it doesnt effect your play it absolutely does. Maybe im wrong, maybe its different on a higher level. You cant say our game was sole lost on talent and coaching. There was a clear fire that was out after the first 2 OSU drives.

In short- i wish sparty wouldve lost i think it wouldve changed the entire dynamic of "The Game"....and anything that couldve helped woulkd be better for UM. I hate em both..... starting to hate sparty more becuase of the daily interactions i have to spend with them.

I'm glad MSU won. If Ohio State made the playoff, there is a chance they could win it.

If MSU makes it, they have no chance.

Yes! Live in Michigan and I just can't take if anymore. It sucks to see OSU keep doing well but I don't know any OSU fans. I am not sure those of you who don't live in Michigan understand how shitty it is. The number of Staee bandwagon fans is ridiculous. They don't know anything about the program and don't even know who the coach was before Dantonio. I asked a friend who just bought season tickets for Staee football this year who the coach was before Dantonio, his response: "Ummm....Saban?" Saban??!! Come on! Now I have to hope Iowa can win to keep those bastards out of they playoffs.

I should have also asked if you live in Michigan. I get that living in Michigan makes MSU unsufferable. And so, I suppose if you actually live in the great State of  Michigan, you want MSU to lose. Outside of Michigan, however, MSU is a virtual non-entity. In my area of the Chicago burbs, I see plenty of Michigan and OSU fans. Some Iowa. Some Northwestern. MSU? Not so much.

OSU fans are insufferably arrogant themselves, and I don't want anything that allows them to have Big 10 Championships, let alone National Championships. It is altogether possible they could have run the table.

I believe that OSU is a better team than MSU, but that they crapped the bed in that game. The weather really was bad for OSU, because it neutralized what little passing game they had. OSU's loss to MSU gives me great schadenfreude. The Buckeyes are beating themselves up big time. I also believe there is no way in tarnation that MSU makes it to win the NC. OSU could have done it, but not MSU. M-dog put it very well.

We almost beat MSU, and I really believe it is going to happen, and soon, that we beat State. I also believe that we are going to win recruiting battles going forward, so I don't care so much about that. I mean, other than Corley, there aren't  many head to head recruiting battles with MSU.

Never OSU winning a title is not out of the realm of normality, Sparty doing so is and given that Groucho Mark has clearly sold his soul to the devil this year..... MSU is bad to have in the playoffs. OSU should have won that damn game and Go Hawkeyes!!!!

Yes, the worst thing that can happen at this point is for the flukes to keep on coming and for MSU to win it all.  I hate even saying that.  I think someone will beat them but it's not out of the realm of possbility. Imagine Sparty having a more recent National Championship than Michigan.  This can't happen.  Iowa better step the fuck up.

Yes. As much as I don't want tosu to win anything I think I want msu to lose more. I do not want to have to deal with these sparty assbag fans for ever crowing about their national championship. God what a nightmare!!!!

I, like most of you, live in Michigan, I will interact with maybe 2 or 3 Ohio State fans the entire year.  I will interact with hundreds of obnoxious MSU fans.  I wish Ohio State had won.

And if MSU wins it all this year I might leave the state permanently.  And before people say, "they have zero chance", you all said that about Ohio State last year.  MSU has a chance.

I'm just ready to beat both again in the same year. As long as state doesn't win the title I don't care. I think they'll beat Iowa and then fall to Clemson or Alabama. I don't think izzo will ever win another title. He seems to be content with getting there and then always gets rolled in the final four. Not to mention higher seeds seem to always fall in his path.

but right now I want to establish dominance over MSU quickly and move on to a competitive 10 year war with OSU. Plus I want very badly to wipe that smirk off of Dantonio's face

How exactly do you establish dominance "quickly" when you are 1-7 over the past 8 years ? I'm sorry, but a win in 2016 only begins to even the score.  There will be no dominance by either side with Dantonio there, but Harbaugh will likely win than he loses going forward. That is what is called a real rivalry, and that is what we have with MSU.

Michigan has sucked vs. both of our main rivals. Still, we almost beat MSU this year. With Cook and Burbridge gone, I believe they will struggle offensively. And if O'Korn is as good as promised, with the return of all our receivers, plus hopefully an upgrade at RB, we should be competitive with MSU as early as next year. I am more pessimistic about Ohio State. They also are losing a bunch of talent (Bosa, Zeke Elliott, etc.), but they have consistently been recruiting at such a high level, I am less sure of whether we will be fully competitive on the field by next year. That'd be my hope, but there's a lot that has to happen in the next 11 some months for that to be the case.

What's kind of funny is that as bad as we feel about getting steamrolled by Ohio State, you know who feels even worse?

Ohio State.

Had they struggled against us they could have said "Well, this was just not our year.  We would have been exposed in the Playoff.  Let's just enjoy the success of last year and move on."

But this was their year.  Once they got their heads out of their asses and started Barrett, they were probably the best team in the counrty.  But they will never get the chance to prove it.

Because they stepped on their own dicks and missed a bunny layup on National TV.

'Tis a pitty.

if you hate OSU more than MSU. For me MSU can be annoying, especially in basketball, but OSU fans are the biggest douche bag, mean spirited, idiots on the planet.

Realistically OSU had the best raw talent in the Big10, followed by MSU. Then there is a gap, especially if you consider depth, and UM is in the next tier with Iowa.

Playing LSU or Florida in the Citrus is a very good ending for year one in rebuilding especially considering key injuries and a new QB who took until October to get comfortbale with the team. I hated The Game but am fine with this season if we "show up strong" in the Citrus Bowl.

That said, I am getting as much joy out of OSU fan freaking out over not getting in the Championship Series. The no respect crying is laughable. These same aholes were ready to run their team out of town for not showing up against MSU. They say the Rose Bowl is fine but deep down they know their season is a failure not having an opportunity to go back to back.

D'Antonio is getting cocky and I can't wait until he gets "the pride before the fall". I stunned he is openly talking about winning it all. Iowa giving them humble pie would be terrific and would make my season. Not only would it kick MSU out of the top 4, but also OSU would be relegated one step below the Rose.

Bottom line it all worked out for my expectations and am "happy" MSU beat OSU.

It's not like these OSU guys won't be thinking about the NFL or be overconfident ; ) Not playing an extra week will hurt them whomever their next opponent is too.

Conversely, I think UM will have a big chip on their shoulder and have something to prove for their bowl game.

Yes, if OSU wins that game, MSU is eliminated from playoff. As it stands now, OSU & MSU could make the playoff. I.e. Alabama or Clemson loses and MSU beats Iowa.
