OT - Best Place for Burgers On Campus

Submitted by You Only Live Twice on

With this being a bye week, hopefully OK time for this thread.

Looking to get some MGo opinions on the best places, walkable from Central campus, to get a good burger.  Blimpy Burgers was a top contender, but it's been so many years since I've had lunch there, that when asked that question, I couldn't credibly give any advice.

Any suggestions that are more useful than my "Well a long time ago, the place to go was Blimpy Burgers?"

Define "burger".

Do you want a grease-soaked slab of meat in between two mediocre buns, and call it a "hangover cure"?

Blimpy's is gonna be pretty good in that regard, certainly better than most fast-food.

BUT my $0.02 actually goes to Jolly Pumpkin off Main Street and Liberty.

Excellent quality meat, grilled to perfection, in between delicious buns, and they use good cheese.

Decidedly one of the best burgers I've ever had, and I've had Kobe beef burgers.

I am partial to Blimpy Burger- but here is a off-the-beaten-track recommendation: Great Plains Burger on North Campus. Great ingredients, and a good honest burger. Won't win any food network competitions, but you will be satisfied given its a fast casual concept.

(If that is still open). Savas I thought had decent burgers but it's not really a burger place. Bar Louie has pretty good burgers and beer and tater tots.

Yeah, Knight's is still around and the burgers are indeed pretty good. At the East Liberty location a few weeks ago, I managed to finally finish and entire "Big Double" and my wife had the All-American. Definitely worth consideration if you're in town, but there are many places to get a decent burger in Ann Arbor, as this thread reveals.

the fry portion is the smalled portion I've ever seen, though.  "Handful of fries" is being generous; I think the actual number of steak fries is in the single digits.  Which is comical when compared to other restaurants where you get a gigantic pile of fries.

To their credit, though, they at least have real Heinz instead of industrial Gordon Foods ketchup in a Heinz bottle

It's been more than a decade since I've eaten there, but put me in the Red Hawk camp. I don't remember the fries being skimpy in the old days--blame inflation, I guess. I would generally get the burger with fried onions, gorgonzola, and bacon. Good stuff, but it's probably not a bad thing that I don't eat those anymore.

Moved about a year ago and we were in walking distance of Casey's. Great burgers, great atmosphere. Damn, I miss this place! Also, I really like Grizzly Peak (the pretzels with apple cider cheese dip are fantastic).

First of all, White Castle is not what I would call a great burger. Or a good burger. And a lot of people (like my wife) absolutely hate White Castle.

But, I happen to love them. They are unique, and for me, with a cast iron stomach, not bad for my system. I don't try to convert others, but fans of White Castle are legion.

I actually remember eating 20 cent White Castle burgers on the south side of Chicago in the 60's, washed down with orange soda and a side of fries and onion rings.

Many places have mighty fine burgers, but on a Michigan blog the only answer is Blimpies.  The OP could reasonably ask what place is decent other than Blimpie's since the lines are always so long.

Blimpie, Casey's, Knights and Fritas.  All are worth a try.  Casey's has the classic burger thing down.  Truly underrated place.  Fritas is super good too, just not your traditional burger.  You really can't go wrong with any of these unless your looking for a McD substitute.
