Tyree Kinnel Burned Redshirt
"Tyree Kinnel played for Michigan yesterday on special teams. Third true freshman to play this season."
Trust the coaches and all that but seems weird given all the safety/corners we have and how well they're playing.

Hmm... sounds Hokian... but its Harbaugh, so I'm sure theres a good reason.

Or burning redshirts for special teams is what every single coach does, out of necessity.

This is not a shot at Richardson, every indication is he's done nothing but work hard since being here, but how was he ranked so highly coming out of high school? Given his size, there was a no way he could have played competitively at a Power 5 school. He was our top recruit the year he commited, IIRC.
October 5th, 2015 at 8:50 AM ^
Yeah, cause that Will Likely guy is terrible, right? Being shorter makes it more of a challenge but Richardson would be fine if he had the playmaking skills that Likely does.

Richardson still cant find the field, ojemudia played meaningful snaps out of necessity. Linebacker type guys always are the first to get put on special teams because that's the skillset and body type that's most versatile there.

Ojemudia is a good player....not sure what you mean by out of necessity?

Also, playing your best guys regardless of class helps recruiting, and most importantly, HARBAUGH recruiting = reloading.

I totally agee with the principal that you don't sit a kid that can contrubute now. But, I think you have to balance that with how much you can potentially get out of him if he gets a 5th year. Yes, injuries can happen, but I don't think you assume one will. If a kid doesn't drastically improve your team this year, but has the potential down the road to as a starter, I think you try your best to RS him. A year of starting as an upperclassman down the road is more impactful than a year of spot starting on special teams.

Didn't Gedeon start and play most of the OSU game his freshman year that we nearly won? I don't buy that someone who starts a game (even only one) should have redshirted. I'd love to have him for one more year, but he started one game and was in the 2 deep all year. Those players do not redshirt.

Harbaugh=KInnel is ready to play, can contribute to an improved special team that gives us a better chance to win.
Hoke=a) I'll try this guy, or b) Dave told me to play him.

However, OTOH I understand the importance of redshirting guys. Maybe Harbaugh foresees this team not needed to redshirt non linemen in the coming years with the influx of talent?

Special Teams are just as important as any other position on the field. Put the best players out there. Michigan hasn't beem stellar on ST for a long time. We are much improved this year!

Pretty sure the NCAA video game franchise has made everyone an expert on red shirting. Do it to all your players and they are magically better the next year!

He had a few almost punt blocks the first two games but hasn't played the last two I don't think. Unless it's a season ending injury, my guess is he'll be back out there as soon as he's able.
October 5th, 2015 at 1:15 AM ^
Carr used to let some freshmen play a little at the beginning of the season, then they would get some minor injury that suddenly was season ending and they would medical. Was thinking that might be the case here. Obviously if he is back on the field later this season then we will know.

Dierdorf and Brandstatter on 580AM were convinced that Alex Malzone was holding on FG tries during the Utah game?
Maybe they were mixed up re: roster, jersey numbers, etc.
I can't confirm either way.

here a few weeks ago. Gone are the days where you redshirt as a freshmen, play as a senior and automatically make the team as a 5th year. Here are the days where you compete for a spot on the field every single day. Win the day!

I think some of the criticism of Hoke's lack of redshirts is unfair. In retrospect a few of them seem terrible, but at the time, Hoke was facing the a dearth of upperclassman in general and had to have underclass at least somewhat prepared to play (and just saw his predecessor only get 3 years...leaving less incentive for "if I redshirt these guys now we could be really good in my 6th year")--not just in the two deep but also in special teams (which people complained when starters like Countess were hurt on ST).
Hoke was a mediocre coach in general and in retrospect we all wish he preserved a few more redshirts, but I think burning them was probably the a 50/50 call at the time.

There's a lot of season left to go, and maybe he's practiced and learned enough to start contributing on the field. And learning from the game experience to be even better down the road.
October 5th, 2015 at 7:43 AM ^
who cares....if at this point in the season you are only getting pissed off about three freshman not redshirting and not the lack of 'blocking' or a running game or losses to bad teams, then everything is fine. IF you really care this much about it, then your a miserable fan and pathetic.
October 4th, 2015 at 10:26 PM ^
One thing I've noticed is that a lot of Harbaugh players get the opportunity to redshirt later in their careers for various reasons. There really isn't any reason to get pissy over a freshman who can help us playing.

I don't think he is a good enough power/collison type blocker to play FB. To use a Harbaugh-term, he doesn't seem to have a lot of "contact courage". I think we could find some type of TE/H-back type role for him that could utilize his pass catching ability and hopefully give him less "move this large man out of the way" type blocking and more "just annoy this guys/get in his way/chip him" type blocking.
