Group Therapy Time: Your Worst Moment

Submitted by KansasBlue on

So my wife admitted last night that with HARBAUGH on board, hopefully leading us out of the wilderness, she's a little worried that I will revert back to watching Michigan games as a raging lunatic in the way that I did when the team was relevant.  I think she has secretly enjoyed the last few years as I've become more and more detached, watching out of a sense of duty more than any real hope of a return to glory.  The discussion led us to my lowest moment, the Crable hit on Troy Smith in the epic 2006 game.  I had invited my parents over to watch with us, and my poor mother is still embarrassed by what I yelled at Mr. Crable.  SO...at what moment did the team make you lose your mind the most?  Come on, it'll help to talk about it!

Dixon and McNabb. The Oregon and Syracuse games were 2 of the ugliest games in Michigan Stadium history. Also the Brad Banks Iowa game as well.

Most games was a play here or there, a drop, or a bad call. Those games were just horrible all the way through.

Watching Michigan fall to Texas in the Rose Bowl in 2005. Was on a family vacation in Brainerd, Minnesota. My Grandma, Grandpa, Aunt, Uncle, and cousins were all Gophers. They wanted to get on my nerves so they heckled me allll game long. After Texas hit that field goal I cried my eyes out (I was only 9). My family did feel bad, but still. That one really hurt.

and then put back in the game.  I can get down after a loss, but that whole scene made me sick.  Worst day ever as a Michigan fan.

the op brings up something I haven't thought about. I've detached from Michigan football so much over the last 8 years I wonder how I'll be when we start winning again? I'll admit not giving a shit was far less stressful and I got more accomplished. hmmmmm

1994 Colorado. I jumped in the air screaming and fell into a crumpled heap as we lost on the infamous Hail Mary. I was so despondent.
More recently, the ND game when Denard was a turnover machine. I swore, was upset at my wife and got banished to the 19" Zenith TV in the basement. I now have a 65" Samsung in the basement, ready for any contingency.

The Game - 2006, like most everyone else. I was watching the game at the bar with my wife (fiance at the time), her OSU fan roommate and OSU fan neighbor. As soon as the game was over, like a kid throwing a tantrum, I ran out the door and walked back to her apartment. We had drove to the bar and the place was 2 or 3 miles away.

2008 Northwestern and the 13-10 loss to Toledo. Front row for both. Was acting like an unpleasant jackass to all within earshot.

Rushing home, two years in a row, from a quiz bowl tourney to see Pittman and fucking Smith lead game winning drives. Then the USC game in 2006, the "we knew what they were going to do every play" game. Really annoyed considering the OSU loss. That's when I wanted Carr gone. If only I knew the darkness that awaited...

I turned the game off and acted like I didn't give a damn more times in the past 8 years than in my first 19.

Anytime that you turn your team off is a low point.

Lowest point was UM getting hammered by Oregon, I was out at MSU at a party that day.

Damien Anderson dropped a sure TD on 4th down for Northwestern.  Thought we had it wrapped up after that.  A-train fumbles without anyone even touching him.  Seriously the worst fumble I have ever seen in my life.  Skip ahead to 6:00 for the ridiculousness.

Passing:  27-40-0-322, 2 TD runs, 2 TD passes and 2 pt conversion pass for the win. He played ridiculously well that night.  Also, NU tailback Damien Anderson had 268 yards rushing.

Northwestern had 644 yards of total offense - evenly split (322 pass, 322 rush)
I still can't believe it.

"In November, games with the championship on the line, you know
you have to play good defense in order to win and we didn't do
that today," Michigan coach Lloyd Carr said.

"I was trying to get the first down and I saw a seam and something bad happened," (Anthony)Thomas added.

And the very next week, that same Northwestern team lost 27-17 to a crappy 9 loss Iowa team, with a very less than impressive offensive display.

This was a common trend during the Carr years.  Teams would bring their absolute 'A' game against us and then absolutely sh*t the bed the next week against a crappy opponent.

2000 Northwestern for me. I was livid and couldn't get over that game for a long time. Granted, I think this question has a lot to do with your age at the time.

Dude, my name is Tyrone and so much this! I used to cry, roll on the floor, curse uncontrollably, do the Rick James laugh and point in people's faces!. This was in joy! Then we started losing... I didn't know what to do with myself. I got a real job, acting like a responsible adult, Saturdays meant free time, I started paying attention to my lady like she was the #1 thing in my life. <whisper> Kansas, I became a shell of my true SELF!

Btw, it wasn't me Rhonda!

Now that Harbaugh is back... Fuck that shit! It's UM all day, all the time baby. Go Blue Bitches!

My wife is worried as well. I did some bad shit until we started sucking. I even missed a few games the past few years.

Hopefully, I have learned my lesson.

It seems like there's actually two types of personal lows here: 1) Emotionally volatile low when a person is still passionate and upset at the team. 2) The emotionless abyss. We should have one for each category.

I did embarrass the hell out of myself at Oregon 2007. Had a senior citizen and Chad Hennes family put me in my place. One of my life's lowlights

Wolverine In Iowa

July 20th, 2015 at 9:03 PM ^

Yeah, that was another fucking treat for me and my family.  I was still clearly angry and sad about the Horror.  My mom was flying in from DC to visit here in Iowa, and we went to pick her up in Cedar Rapids and then go to the Iowa-Syracuse game (same day as UO-Michigan; mom's a Syracuse alum).  We ate dinner where I could see U-M getting demolished, my spirits sinking by the minute.  Finally, my mom nearly smacked the shit out of me for being such a baby, deservedly.

Iowa proceeded to crush Syracuse, and so the Iowa contingent were brutal, but my mom took it like a champ, further illustrating how much of a loser I was.

All of last season is a horrible blur of crap.

I can't remember which day it was but Desmond said on Gameday that he went to the Michigan practices that week and didn't like what he saw.  Something about Peppers looking like the only player that was putting any effort in.

I've only been a Michigan fan since 2010, as that was my freshman year there. So since I can't really name anything before that, I'll have to go with the 2014 Notre Dame game. Even though many games that season went horribly and were cringeworthy in their own right, that game was the turning point for me. I went from thinking "maybe Hoke can turn it around" to "Hoke is going get fired and this is going to be a very bad, long season".

2013 OSU game. I'd never been so livid, but at the same time, so emotionally crushed after a sporting event. Say what we will about all of Hoke's faults; his teams came ready to play when OSU was on the other side of the field.

I was pissed, sure, but I just felt so bad for Gardner. He played on one good foot after being bruised and battered all year, and he still looked like an All-American. Nearly willed Michigan by himself to what I believe would've been the biggest upset in the history of the rivalry. After the year he had, I would've loved nothing more than to see him carried off the field by his fellow students in triumph.

Leaving the stadium and watching the OSU trash wrap their arms around each other and sing that god awful song carmen was bad enough. But as I was walking up State St by the Union, what I'm sure were a few drunken OSU undergrads walked up to me, did a lovely little crotch grab, and shared a few words that would probably upset their mothers. I really hope that they were the ones Lewan squared off with that night.

My entire life has been filled with heartbreaking Michigan losses. We kind of have a history of getting our asses kicked by other perennial powers in the modern era.

Anybody wants to relive the 2009 Purdue game, it's on Big Ten Network now.

I get the idea that a lot of the "Classic" games of other teams will come from this era.  Ugh.
