The first three Star Wars were, indeed, about pure storytelling.  Or, at the very least, they were conceived and originally written that way.  Lucas was allowed to realize his vision because he owned the property and he had creative control over the first three movies.  We was free to make them at his own pace because he wasn't trying to recover a $2 billion investment like Disney needs to do now.  If you want to see what Disney will likely do with Star Wars, then look at the trajectory of ESPN over the past 20 years.

Anyhow, I don't care if Disney merchandises this shit, but they are already doing Episode VIII with a different director and they have a spin-off film in the works too.  I think that the best case outcome here is that Disney's Star Wars is like today's Superhero comic book movies.  We'll get lots of them and they will range from shit to "pretty good", but none of them will be culturally influential or revered as one of the all time greats 25 years later.

While I have these persistent reservations about how good this movie might be as a movie (and I could be completely wrong, of course), it looks visually superb just based on the preview. I would definitely go see it despite not being a huge Star Wars fan. That light saber  was awesome - I will say that.

Good God. The music, the Artoo shot, the Han and Chewie reveal... I've watched it 6 times in a row and it's still mind-blowing. These trailers are making it hard to manage expectations for the movie.

Your last sentence sums up my thoughts exactly.  I've been trying to downplay any excitement about it and go in with no expectations so that I'm not disappointed.

The trailers are ruining my attempts at that.  This looks so awesome.

But to be fair, I said that about Episodes 1-3.

To be even more fair, those moves weren't terrible, just didn't stand with the originals.*

*Except for Jar Jar Binks.  He was real bad.

I watched it thrice already and good god I cannot wait for this movie. The one I'm looking forward to the most this year happens to be the last one. Go figure. Go out with a bang, I guess. JJ is the perfect choice for SW and I really hope he comes back for episode 9 and others in the trilogy to follow this new one.

When I saw Han Solo and Chewbacca, the first thing I considered is why Han Solo had aged at an appropriate rate and showed some gray, but Chewbacca looked like it was still the Summer of 1977.

However, research has revealed that:  "Wookiees were a long-lived people, with a lifespan of several standard centuries."  (http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Wookiee)

Good to know in case you've considered befriending an adult wookie, just know that that Wookie will likely be burying you and softly release a melancholy low growl at your wake...

I so badly hope they bring back Mark Hamill and his cheesy acting.  One of my favorite all-time lines from any movie is (in a shrill, whiney voice) "But I was going into Toshi Station to pick up some power converters!"

When it was announced that the original cast was going to be in this movie, I was very disappointed, simply because I wanted something new and fresh; the Skywalker family wasn't that. Then I realized that they will only be in this movie and we can move on to something/someone else in the other movies to come. I know that the Skywalker family will still be the premise of the story in the later movies, but that's OK.

From the deep dark secrets vault: I was one of the first Star Wars nerds, having seen it on 17 consecutive weekends when it first came out in 1977.
