Hackett could be around longer than we thought...

The plan was not for Hackett to be in this position long-term.

Well, that has changed folks. Per source, Michigan’s board of regents met recently and Hackett told the board that he has not found a person or persons that he would recommend the board consider for the permanent athletic director post. Accordingly, he advised the Regents that he would be the one making the decision on Hoke’s future following the season. The Regents per source, recognizing the potential issue this could present when trying to hire a new head coach, asked Hackett if this meant he was prepared to stay on “at least two years” in order to provide stability when, potentially, attempting to hire a new face of Michigan football. Hackett told the Regents he was prepared to do so.

Exactly. There was no indication the defense would improve at all if given a year 4; in fact, there is every indication it would've been even worse.

Once Rodriguez and his yahoo friends started meddling with Shafer's defense and then later fired Shafer, it was over. Everything else was just epilogue. Even with Denard goddam Robinson Michigan under RR posed no threat to competent teams.

I agree with you, it all seems so painfully easy, write the check and hire Harbaugh. Unite the fan base, alumni, and university for the first time in seven years. If I ran my company like Michigan handles the coaching searches, or the process, I would be fired. We seem like bumbling amateurs. Look at USC, they found the guy they wanted, fired Kiffin, and look where they are. Can someone at the university bloody execute? Amateurs.

Difference between Brandon and Hackett is Brandon was bringing Dominos down, Hackett did well with Steelcase. Could this be because maybe the current AD's on our wish list can't do any kind of talking to Michigan due to current contracts they're in? Or could this be they really just want to be stealth about what's going on?

And if his main objective is to find a good AD and he can't get it done in a couple of months and says he needs two years, then he's incompetent in his role. Other schools seem to be able to do it pretty quickly. Again, why is it that these things seem to be so much harder for Michigan?

There's nothing wrong with the AD search, just unrealistic expectations that make it seem unique.

We fired the AD midseason, but everyone things because we're Michigan a high profile AD will just drop everything and come here a month later.

Really?  Texas's AD announced his retirement in October last year, and they hired a new AD in November, when the current AD wasn't even supposed to retire until this summer.  If Texas wanted to, they could have waited until the summer, but they moved quickly and found a good person for the job quickly.  Doesn't seem like it is that hard to do, when you want to.

as an AD. Our pass two AD's were inexperienced as well. Look at how their coaching hires turned out.

THis is very bad news. In today's collegiate athletics an experienced AD is essential. How can a University with its reputation for excellence continue to make the same mistake?

But only a clueless CEO-type would think that hiring a coach before hiring an AD is a good idea. AD's usually want their own people installed. Why would you want to automatically create tension by hiring a coach first? Unless, you're clueless to the social and political currents of a robust athletic department.

Wow, he created a story . . . .out of his own story.  And absolutely nothing else.  No sources.  No statements by anybody.  Not even any rumors.  Just his own thoughts.

This is the new thing now.  You think out loud "Bob Stoops should consider Michigan or Florida so as not to get stale" and then you report on it as if it were an actual story "Bob Stoops in play?"

All within the same article.

Saves a lot of time and money on actual reporting.  And nobody seems to care.

as of last monday, they hadn't even formed the search committee yet for the new AD, so this part seems pretty weird:

Michigan’s board of regents met recently and Hackett told the board that he has not found a person or persons that he would recommend the board consider for the permanent athletic director post.

they're going to contract out the search process, like everyone else does these days.

Yeah, seems like that's missing some context.  Its probably as simple as regents: "have you found any candidates for the permanent AD post?"

Hackett (probably): "No.  We're going to be forming a search committee in the coming weeks."

Regents (probably): "Ahh...cool.  In the event this takes a long time, how long can you stay on as interim AD?  A year?  Two years?"

Hackett (probably): "I could do two years."

Article: HACKETT HASN'T FOUND ANYONE, PLANS TO STAY ON TWO YEARS!!

Seems fine to me if it means it gives us the best chance at getting a strong coach.  It makes sense in that it typically takes 2-3 months to hire an AD (at least), and even if they rushed it, the new AD would just be getting settled right as he would need to make the biggest decision of his tenure.

This would be tough for anyone, and basically impossible if it's an AD who doesn't have deep ties to Michigan and already knows and understand the landscape, various players, etc.

Hackett is a really sharp dude, and certainly capable of running a smart coaching search.  Whether he will do so or not remains to be seen, but I don't get any heartburn over all this.

Is anyone really caught off guard by this? Hackett was going to be tasked with firing Hoke from the start. We don't need to postpone THAT decision until a permanenet AD is in place.

Honestly, who cares how long Hackett is around for? Is this something that is truly upsetting your day today?

Please people. Don't be so bored and starved for information that you pretend to care about an interim Athletic Director who we will not hear very much from during his tenure.

This doesn't make a whole lot of sense.  Why would Hackett tell the Regents he hasn't found anyone?  He isn't running the search.

Are there really people who sit around and worry that our interim AD will be here too long?!?

Are you people really so bored that this registers as a productive way to utilize time?
