Maybe Hoke personally okayed the art work, maybe he never saw it...maybe only the concept was shown to Hoke and the final artwork and distribution was performed by a unit of the AD over which he has no oversight. I'd be glad to know the chain of events if anybody could share them.
I'm not saying Hoke even had anything to do with poster. I believe it went out without him even knowing they were sending Weber something. But we've seen Hoke's lack of attention during gameday with regards to clock management and his game plans. So if he isn't that detailed regarding those major aspects of his job, that shows that he isn't setting a good example for the rest of the staff in the Michigan football program, and that trickles down and the consequence is the product we saw on the field last year as well as stupid minor stuff such as "Amercians". Just a concern of mine is all, nothing more. If you don't agree that's fine, I understand that some will see this as a major stretch and I wouldn't totally disagree. I only brought it up to see if I was the only one who had that thought. If I am, that's fine and I'll quietly back out of the thread. Was just curious

Speaking as a former copy editor, I dealt with misspelled words on a daily basis. At no time did I think they were indicative of my boss having poor attention to detail, management fostering a culture of carelessness, or any other kind of institutional breakdown. I always felt it was because some people can't spell.
In the same way that sometimes a cigar is just a cigar, sometimes a typo is just a typo.
but there is a difference between a typo and a person not knowing how to spell. One is a slip of the finger and isn't a reflection on a persons spelling ability at all. Typo's almost certainly come down to carelessness while someone not knowing how to spell is a reflection on their cognitive ability. In other words one person has a really good excuse while the other is just trying to finish too fast.
While i did well in english class and spelling, the apostrophe has given me fits my entire life. I could never keep straight whether it was plurals get it while possesives don't or the other way around. When it's a contraction I totally get it, but in those two circumstances I fear i'll always struggle. With any luck I'll remember what you've said here.

It's pretty obvious that you're saying that the "Amercian" typo is a Freudian construct for a penis. Not sure I agree with that, but it's pretty clear that's what you're saying.
(Also, I think you make a good point. This is just a typo - not even a spelling error. It is funny here, and would be funnier if it was on a rival's mock-up of a magazine cover. But it's a bit short of an indelible sign that we have a slipshod coaching staff.)

But in regards to the Freudian construct, I think one thing we can agree upon is this: Some typos are bigger than others.
Provide examples of that, outside of "ERMAGERD THE LINE WAS BAD." Provide three coherent, well-reasoned examples that back this statement up factually.
You are either completely clueless or extremely overrate how much affect the FB coach has on the AD "culture". The graphic design guys report to the SID (maybe a marketing guy, but I doubt it) who reports to the AD. Therefore, this thread is the appropriate place to complain about the culture that Dave Brandon has created.

Because soon (as in currently) he'll have a bunch of 30-50 year old men fawning positively or negatively over that image and turning him off to all schools equally, leading us back to square one, where all Weber has is the image.
They should just hire our poster who does it all in Paint.

His original cover had his name as Chris Webber. I'm guessing that Shaun Crawford got the Jamal Crawford cover, so that's why he was calling the Michigan coaches earlier today.
Who's doing these covers? Stan Rizzo from Sterling Cooper & Partners? Did Stan do a little too much "medical marijuana" before the Mike Weber cover was released?

Stoop to this kind of stuff to recruit kids - bad proofreading or not. To me it's kind of a mindless arm's race by the major schools. "They're doing it so we have to also".
The typo is indeed embarrassing and we'd all be quick to laugh at another school making a similar mistake. That said, we could also be the school to find a good fix (and I bet the designer who put the piece together feels sick about it). Here's what I'd do as a fix:
Put out another mock cover, this time of Inc/Money/something business-y. The cover image should be a regular guy in business casual clothing running the steps of Michigan Stadium. Headline something like, "Every part of The Team strives for perfection at Michigan". A subheadline could indicate a connection to the typo. Recognize a mistake, poke a little fun at oneself and continue to push "the team" mentality. It's the right way to fix a goof.
Didn't you guys tear into tOSU for doing this? Although they did spell American correctly.

I guess Im old school, and prefer Bo's approach.... regarding Mark Messner's recruitment, he and Mo waited in a car, outside Messner's house, at the moment Messner returned from the airport on a UCLA recruiting trip.... When Messner got out of car, Bo approached him, handed him a Michigan VHS tape, and said to the likes of "You belong at Michigan", and then left.
presumptuous on Bo's part, they may have been a Betamax family. :)
