Irish Schadenfreude
(Apologies to my best friend, Bill, a Domer from Winetka who was a senior when the Irish last won a National Championship (and Reagan was President!))
Let’s enjoy some salty Leprechaun tears, for the leaves have not yet fully turned by Saint Mary’s Lake, and yet their shall be no Playoff appearance for those lads with the Golden Helmets…
Well, as the NBC announcers pointed out last night, their lads were busy studying for midterms last week, and couldn’t be bothered to show up in Louisville.
Next year I’m sure they’ll make room for a two (or three?!!) loss team from South Bend, but, alas, this fall they can only drown their sorrows at their girlfriend’s dorm (oh, sorry, no premarital relations allowed, so must head to the ole pub instead!)

Winnetka. Two “n”s.

No it was Skokie. Baritone was this really fat guy. I mean, like orca fat.

Just wondering if this is a Usual Suspect…

"Really? I live in Queens. Did you put that together yourself, Einstein?"
October 8th, 2023 at 1:38 PM ^
note to OP: when you post a schandfreude thread don't forget to post the, well, schandreude. you know, the funny/sad/delusional, etc. comments.
October 8th, 2023 at 1:39 PM ^
yeah now i'm worried it's the OP itself that's the schnadenfreunde
October 8th, 2023 at 2:11 PM ^
schandfreude?!
I’m not sure he could post that even if he wanted to, now there’s another word that’s close, but…
schandfreude?!

October 8th, 2023 at 1:47 PM ^
Well, where is it?
October 8th, 2023 at 1:48 PM ^
NDNation making coaching analogies.
I posted something along the lines of MF was a beautiful girl you meet online and she swipes on you and all of her pictures look good and she says all the right things. Things progress as nature takes its course and one thing leads to another and you find out she has a huge lower back tattoo. A few weeks later she gets one on her wrist and then on her foot and finally a sleeve and then she quickly develops a crank addiction. All the while she’s still gorgeous and wears her clothes well and says all of the right things. It’s the exact same thing with MF. I wish I had been wrong but it’s time to piss on the fire and call in the dogs. It’s over Johnny. It’s so fkng over. At least we have this place we can come to and vent with kindred miserable souls that share in the misery.
October 8th, 2023 at 4:11 PM ^
That is quite the description.
October 9th, 2023 at 1:10 AM ^
There's a big leap from getting a couple tatts to a crank addiction.

LOL
I remember during the 90’s (during the Lou Holtz years) when a huge favorite Domer team struggled all day at home against Stanford and ended up losing. The NBC announcers said the crappy showing was because ND was tired from mid-terms and didn’t have as much time to practice. I was young but that was when I learned that Notre Dame is the only school to have mid-terms.
Seriously, fuck those guys. They were never deserving of having that NBC contract 25 years ago and they don’t deserve it now.
October 8th, 2023 at 2:27 PM ^
They’re trying to survive until ‘25 when they try to get up to market with a new deal.
October 8th, 2023 at 4:02 PM ^
Hopefully with Peacock.
October 8th, 2023 at 2:52 PM ^
They didn’t think Stanford might have some challenging midterms too? That’s hilarious.
October 8th, 2023 at 3:09 PM ^
The ESPN guys were making similar excuses for them last night too
October 8th, 2023 at 4:12 PM ^
I’d take ND midterms over Stanford midterms every day of the week and twice on Sunday.
October 8th, 2023 at 1:52 PM ^
From checking out The Athletic ND fans seem to be in one of two camps.
Either, "Fire Freeman right now." or "ND has played the toughest CFB schedule the world has ever seen and ND with two losses is better than anyone, including OSU."
October 8th, 2023 at 1:57 PM ^
I mean, I still think they might be better than OSU. Too bad they weren’t tougher.
October 8th, 2023 at 3:02 PM ^
They probably were tough enough. Their real problem was they weren't eleven-y enough.
October 8th, 2023 at 2:09 PM ^
There's another camp (on NDNation at least) that blames the AD for not hiring better assistants for Freeman. I guess they don't think it's the head coach's job to fill out his own staff.
October 9th, 2023 at 9:09 AM ^
I think there's something to this. Freeman tried to hire someone last year and they took another job. So I don't know if it's a money thing or what
October 8th, 2023 at 4:28 PM ^
Duke and Louisville. So tough. Lol
October 8th, 2023 at 1:57 PM ^
That's Urban's problem, too. He can't drown his sorrows at Nebraska's dorm, so he uses his pub.
October 8th, 2023 at 4:16 PM ^
and cold papa johns
October 8th, 2023 at 2:02 PM ^
Did we really need a 3rd ND post saying the exact same thing?
October 8th, 2023 at 2:36 PM ^
YES!
October 8th, 2023 at 4:16 PM ^
tbf this one doesn’t really say anything lol
October 8th, 2023 at 2:08 PM ^
This Saturday evening, USC plays a game in South Bend. The game time temperature will be around 50 degrees. And, as in Ann Arbor - there’s a chance of rain - yes, I know it six days away.
Any thoughts about this ND vs USC game?
October 8th, 2023 at 2:16 PM ^
USC has a potent offense that should overcome the ND defense. While the ND defense stinks, this could allow ND QB Sam Hartman to have a good day.
Someone tell ND HC Freeman that he'll need 11 guys on the field on defense at all times.
USC to come out with another close win.
October 8th, 2023 at 2:30 PM ^
I think ND will win this one. They have a more complete team and are playing at home. They’ll just need to be up multiple scores late so Freeman can’t blow it.
October 8th, 2023 at 2:39 PM ^
Agreed. USC has yet to play a team that can play complementary football let alone have a competent enough defense that can afford to put a spy on the QB. I don't see USC being able to stop NDs run game.
October 8th, 2023 at 3:05 PM ^
That god awful Alex Grinch defense couldn't stop 11 golden retriever puppies from putting up 400 yards of total offense.
October 8th, 2023 at 3:30 PM ^
I reject this abominable slander against golden retriever puppies.
October 8th, 2023 at 6:28 PM ^
Hey, Air Bud and his pups are better than you’d think
October 8th, 2023 at 2:09 PM ^
Is it too late to say quit drinking and go to bed because I'm thinking you're on one right now.
October 8th, 2023 at 2:14 PM ^
I’ve been drinking since 9am, so I think this is a fair request.
October 8th, 2023 at 4:17 PM ^
started drinking before the Jags/Bills kickoff lol

This probably seemed really clever while being written...alas
October 8th, 2023 at 2:27 PM ^
Anyone remember that ND fan boy who was all jacked up on steroids and always seemed to be on the verge of crying!! Those videos were always funny!
October 8th, 2023 at 2:34 PM ^
Damefan1, I presume. Yes, he was always good for some unintentional humor.
I can’t imagine he’s enjoying a very high quality of life ~ 15 years later, but hopefully I am wrong about that.
October 8th, 2023 at 3:16 PM ^
Yikes, 15 years ago was RR first season and we only won 3 games. I'm so glad JH got our team back on the winning track!
October 8th, 2023 at 2:42 PM ^
I wonder if CJ Carr would still make his decision to go to ND.
October 8th, 2023 at 3:24 PM ^
Interesting point. I suspect if ND ends up 9-3 he'll still go there, even if they fall to 8-4. He's clearly on track to start given they had two guys transfer out after Hartman came in. I don't see him coming our way with Jadyn Davis coming in, who fits our style of play better. I think Carr is more of a dropback passer. After seeing what JJ can do, having a QB with legs is a big plus.
One wild card: Tommy Rees was his biggest recruiter but is now at Bama. Could Bama take a run at him? Saban's been known to pull away players who seemed bound for elsewhere.
October 8th, 2023 at 6:03 PM ^
Bama could use a competent QB.
October 8th, 2023 at 7:20 PM ^
Don’t want Carr…. Hope he flops wherever he goes. His grandfather was a mediocre coach who walked into third base and thought he hit a triple. His lack of loyalty when transitioning out echoes to this day through his grandson. Aidan Hutchinson and his father are the perfect counterpoints.
October 8th, 2023 at 9:15 PM ^
Clown take, but go off I guess...
October 8th, 2023 at 3:09 PM ^
I think ND beats USC. Home game, USC has really been beatable. I doubt USC will be able to slow the ND running game like Louisville did. ND probably loses at Clemson to finish 9-3, followed by a bowl loss.
