Traverse City, MI
Pros: Beautiful scenery
Hot summers with little rainfall
4 brewpubs for every man, woman and child
Decent cultural and retail options relative to the area
Cons: Brutal winter
Real estate costs that make Ann Arbor look reasonable
"Foodie" scene that is both overpriced and substandard
A populace within the city limits that would rival Ann Arbor's liberalism, while the opinions of the people outside the city limits would make the typical white 1950's Mississippi resident appear enlightened. In short, the national political divide in a nutshell.

I would have to imagine that if traffic is slowing down, then the powers that be have taken note and will be working on a plan of action. Personally, my visits to the site have decreased substantially to maybe three or four times a day. At the office I find myself visiting the new website far less often than I visited the old one, and at home at night I don't even check the website, whereas I would check the app several times per evening. Maybe it will just take some time, but this has to be costing them ad revenues.

If you live in the Charter service area, they have this deal where you pay what works out to an additional $32/month over their base Internet service fee for cable. You get FSD, BTN, ESPN, FSN, local networks and a bunch of other stuff. You get one cable box in that price, and no DVR, although you can watch on other TVs via the Charter app on Roku (not available on fire stick though). Best deal I've seen, plus you get cable reliability (ironically though my cable was down for the first three hours of the MSU game last fall, so I watched on the app).

As a Traverse City resident, this sounds pretty typical. People up here are always doing "interesting" little things that end up somehow getting noticed and then get media attention. You would almost think that was part of the plan all along. Also, Traverse City Business news just did their annual "40 under 40" feature, and Northern Express just had their "20 most interesting local people" of whatever feature. Through personal knowledge or local hearsay I can tell you that a lot of those people were initially funded by family loans or are currently still receiving regular cash infusions from family members. Must be nice. Many of these people will no doubt consider themselves "self-made".
Kind of reminds me of the rich kids I knew in college who were " putting themselves through college" on informal parental loans with unspecified repayment terms that were actually just ham-fisted attempts to reign in their college spending by creating the illusion that they would need to be paid back.
I could go on and on with this.

I think it is only fair that Amazon pay state sales tax on their transactions. If states really want to collect taxes on all online retailers they should band together and create some clearinghouse where retailers can simply and efficiently file all of their various sales taxes in one place. Othertwise this will be a major compliance issue and many retailers will have trouble keeping up.
The things I buy from Amazon I will continue to buy from Amazon. Their absolute cost advantage on many items will not be affected much by this. I have never bought from Amazon solely to avoid paying MI sales tax. That part was just gravy.

People are funny. I tentatively agreed to a job offer. Had issues selling house. Job was a GM position. Asked devil who had built company from ground up (and who I would be replacing) and who was by my conservative ballpark estimation making half a million plus annually for approximately a $7,500 annualized housing allowance until I could sell the house and move my family to the new town. He just about blew his top and immediately gave me a take his offer as is or leave it ultimatum. Obviously told him to eat shit in politically correct terms since I still had my job. That was fall 2012. As of Fall 2014 he was still looking to fill the position. Lesson: don't be a cheap fuck in a shit hole town trying to fill a sensitive position.

I also love checking in on that cesspool. RCMB really makes me appreciate great Michigan sites like this and TTB. Their recruiting analysis is so shallow. It seems like not one of their recruits has any flaws to their game. Rather, the blue wall has conspired to underrate their commits. Here I see nuanced evaluations of our players. There I see, and I do not exaggerate, statements like "eat it Harblow. Lukusa didn't play stiff when cHoke was after him". That is the closest they can come to acknowledging a criticism of a Sparty commit. The Only Colors is a little more civilized but they also have a hard time offering any insightful analysis that might be construed as objective concerning potential or current Spartans.
I know Mark D is a great coach. While Sparty have a hard time acknowledging that Harbaugh has done anything notable as a coach, we cannot plead that same type of ignorance in regards to their coach. We have lived through this bullshit for the last seven years. Jim Harbaugh took a shit Stanford team from the toilet bowl to the Orange bowl. He basically matched Mark D's career crowning achievement and walked away to accomplish bigger and better things. He did a few things and now he's home.
I am not overly concerned with our record next year. Obviously I hope for the best. But number one for me in 2015 is toughness. Punch Sparty back. Knock them down at the line of scrimmage. Make Connor Cook eat some dirt, and remind those cum stains that they come from a manure scented shithole and maybe they should all just stick to milking cows and designing juice boxes.

I imagins that it will not end up costing the NFL anything close to that in additional taxes. Being that the league is essentially a special intterest group for team owners, I assume that should December 31 (or whenever their year end is) approaches, they can engage in some sort of tax planning to delay payments so that the league itself will usually show a loss, or negligible amounts of income.

One of Matt Taibbi's annual recommendations in his combine and draft analysis is to tell teams to take the weed guy in the draft. |03/17/2015 - 9:55am||This is why I honestly||
This is why I honestly believe that in the near future ISPs will be treated like power companies are now, where their rates are regulated and where they must submit requests to a regulatory agency in order to raise prices. The internet is too necessary to leave this up to the free market. Currently Charter is the only reliable internet in my area, and they are pretty much raping everybody now. I pay over $50 month, and the quality is extremely shitty. It seems like they are trying to make up for decreasing cable revenues. We should not let this happen.
|03/17/2015 - 9:50am||Curious why you give a rip||
Curious why you give a rip who gets paid on the deal? Sure, at first things might not be too much better as content providers work out how to set prices in a drastically changed media landscape, but that is not my concern. My concern (as a current Dish network subscriber) is to lower the amount I pay monthly for the content I want. I realize that the per channel costs will be high, but eventually I really believe that a lot of fat will be trimmed and we will be able to more exactly target our subscriber packages to better reflect our individual tastes and save money at the same time. The truth is, there are quite a few people on this board, and whom I know personally who would be happy with ESPN, BTN, HBO and Netflix.
There is a certain amount of pessimism involved when people calim that the high cost of cable is inevitable regardless of how we might choose to structure our subscriptions. It's as if we have accepted that in order to get any of the desired content we want we have to pony up a certain fixed amount. However, look at cell phone plans. It was only 3 or four years ago that everybody was on a cell phone contract with a major carrier. I had two shitty phones on a Sprint contract with no data and my monthly bill was $120-$130. My wife and I now have two high quality smartphones that each cost around $100 and we pay less than $100/month inclusive for unlimited minutes, text, and data in excess of what we will ever conceivably use. Not bad. But, I would also note that the other day I was in a meeting with a guy and he talked about the Radio Shack where his son works. Talked about how half the people who go there are buying prepaid phones and he said all of this with an air of distaste, as if there is something low class about not being bound to a contract. I said nothing, because he is a valuable client and I usually allow my good clients to revel in their self-indulgent fantasies. However I imagine that in the future, after many of us have cut the cord and are paying 25-30% less than our neighbors who are buying cable, there will be scorn heaped on those who no longer participate in the game.
|03/16/2015 - 6:30pm||I guess I would say probably||
I guess I would say probably not. EMU would not be required to pay their athletes anything let's say. If the schools were authorized to do so the Power 5 schools would all almost certainly elect to do so. Schools that could not afford to do so would not attract the top talent, who would presumably want to get paid. Bowling Green would be left recruiting lower tier players, most of whom did not possess power 5 offers. How would that be any different than what is going on already?
