Wild Swing in Early Odds for the Iowa Game: Michigan by 3.5 to 10.5
Some of the early odds are out for next week. DraftKings has us favored by 3.5, BetMGM has us favored by 4.5 and FanDuel has us by 10.5.
Another early line has Maryland by 3.5 over MSU.

I’d put the Maryland-MSU spread closer to 11.5
September 25th, 2022 at 9:46 AM ^
Agreed. MD may have played their cleanest game of the year vs UM. They’ll return to form some, but will still beat Sparty by double digits. Maybe going on the road will be a blessing but the Sparty spiral has begun. They did nothing well the past two games.
September 25th, 2022 at 10:14 AM ^
Clean because of all the missed holding calls by the refs.
September 25th, 2022 at 10:41 AM ^
This was Maryland forgodsakes! 15 penalties against SMU and then none yesterday until the end of the game. Almost nothing was being called and that only favored a grabby defense and oline on an underdog even more. Wonder why nobody could get open? Harbaugh alluded to it in his presser that nothing was being called but what does he know about such things? Guessing somebody bet big on UM to not beat the spread.

Michigan wasn’t called for much either, and benefitted greatly from an INT (by Turner) that for some reason wasn’t overturned even though the ball clearly hit the ground. That was a key play. Stop whining.
September 25th, 2022 at 11:48 AM ^
It's fair to point out that an officiating crew that doesn't call penalties on the secondary will result in fewer big pass plays, which logically favors the less talented team. That's not to say that we didn't catch breaks either, but with an officiating crew like the one that did the Maryland-SMU game, we likely would have seen a more comfortable Michigan win.

+1 The officiating stunk. There were obvious missed calls on both sides. I appreciated the flow of the game not dictated by officials but some were egregious.

The INT by Turner is a red herring - it did not have a significant impact on the game. M failed to score on its ensuing possession when Moody missed the 42 yarder. UMd got the ball back on their 25, so in the end it cost UMd about 35 yards in field position. Consider that compensation for a few uncalled holds, and it balances out…
September 25th, 2022 at 10:51 AM ^
There were some missed hold but this feels like sour grapes. I thought our DL did a poor job of handfighting. Hopefully UFR will let us know.
September 25th, 2022 at 10:55 AM ^
it wasn't just that, their db's were grabbing our receivers on every passing down, every one.
September 25th, 2022 at 12:09 PM ^
Exactly. The secondary was very grabby. Lot of egregious holding. Obviously that doesn't get called all the time but you have to call it sometimes to keep people honest.
September 25th, 2022 at 11:32 AM ^
I don't think it's just sour grapes. They were the most penalized team in the country for a reason - I watched about half the SMU game and they deserved every flag they got. The refs swallowed their whistles yesterday for both teams. But that kind of lose officiating helps a team like Maryland far more than Michigan.
September 25th, 2022 at 4:27 PM ^
Exactly my point. Was our coach whining at his presser or stating facts...I wonder why in a win?
More learned minds must know. I guess all the commentary by the announcers who covered and commented on Maryland this year through SMU and last year made up the laundry thrown at that team and mentioned it due to bias. Maybe they should not comment on injuries either as that also has no bearing on a football game.
September 25th, 2022 at 1:11 PM ^
Completely agree Maryland had no penalties but wow I saw at least 4-5 blatant holding calls that should’ve been called on Maryland.
September 25th, 2022 at 9:47 AM ^
Why not 20 points? Or 30? Maryland has a pretty good offense and the Sparty defense is...what's the word?...oh yeah, horseshit.

Because overreactions and overconfidence built Las Vegas...

Let’s see if Maryland’s QB (I’m not spelling it) is healthy first.
September 25th, 2022 at 10:01 AM ^
Their backup looked serviceable throwing the ball, which might be all they need against that MSU secondary.
September 25th, 2022 at 12:10 PM ^
Yes, I'll take that guy against MSU all day long.
September 25th, 2022 at 10:44 AM ^
Did you see him shout our guys were intentionally trying to hurt him? Morris could have done that and so could others if they wanted to but the team has never played that way. Trying to whip up the troops, I guess, but could have led to retaliation and escalation.
September 25th, 2022 at 2:09 PM ^
The D should be trying to get a clean hit on the QB that knocks him out of the game. It's not flag football.
September 25th, 2022 at 10:11 AM ^
The only question for Maryland is Tagovailoa’s health - although the backup seems like a player, too.
If they have functional QB play, I don’t see how MSU stays with them. Sparty can’t run the ball and Thorne can’t complete anything downfield.
September 25th, 2022 at 10:22 AM ^
I would take MD (-13) and the over. Their strength can take advantage of Sparty's weakness. MSU is in trouble if they keep turning the ball over and can't put points on the board. MD's defense doesn't scare me, but I don't think MSU has the offense yet to come back from a 2-score deficit.
September 25th, 2022 at 10:50 AM ^
SP+ has this as Maryland by 4. Some other of my preferred power ratings aren't out yet, but that seems about right. Maybe one can assume that too much of last year (i.e. Walker games) are built into SP+, and can find an edge there. If so, godspeed. The schadenfreude will be payment enough for me.
September 25th, 2022 at 11:30 AM ^
While UM looked challenged yesterday in parts of the game, GA struggled with Kent State. OK lost. UM came out with a win - period. Sparty can talk smack and say this and that about our performance. In the end - we are 4-0 and ranked #4 where they are 2-2.

Yesterday’s win is going to age well if Tungaviola stays healthy this year. They are going to finish 3rd in the division
September 25th, 2022 at 11:50 AM ^
I'd still guess 4th, but definitely above sparty!
September 25th, 2022 at 9:39 AM ^
I would take Maryland and give the points.
September 25th, 2022 at 11:41 AM ^
This is the best Locksley led squad at MD, I think they take Staee to the woodshed. October is brutal for sparty, @MD, ohio, Whiskey and @UM…turn out the lights, the party’s over!!!
September 25th, 2022 at 11:51 AM ^
sparty at 0-5 in the conference would be a delicious thing to behold

Once Iowa finished off Rutgers, I said to my brother sitting next to me: "What do you think the UM/Iowa spread will be? Feels like UM -4 to me." My brother replied, "nah. It's higher. UM -6."

It's his brother. He didn't say anything, he gave him a wedgie.
September 25th, 2022 at 9:44 AM ^
Did their punter get hurt or something?
September 25th, 2022 at 9:51 AM ^
Most likely some sort of overuse injury

Iowa defense outscored their offense (14-13) last night, against a crappy team. If we avoid turnovers, we will win. Iowa defense is very good so I do not expect a blowout, but if we score 17 with no turnovers we win. For each turnover we give them, add 7 points to what we need to win. I would give 6 points but be uncomfy with anything more than that.
September 25th, 2022 at 9:51 AM ^
I’m uncomfy with the word uncomfy.
Other than that, I agree.
September 25th, 2022 at 10:07 AM ^
"Iowa defense outscored their offense (14-13) last night..."
This amazes me. Iowa's offense is SOOO bad that Iowa administered a self-Rutger, against Rutger. So is that a defense selfie, or an offense selfie? I'm confused... This level of bad has me confused as to which Rutger to credit, offense or defense.
Either way, it's a self-Rutger, which is amaizing!
September 25th, 2022 at 9:15 PM ^
Isn’t a Rutger when you have more points than your opponent has yards?
September 25th, 2022 at 10:14 AM ^
On the season, has the Iowa offense managed to outscore its defense? It’s crazy to ask that four weeks into the season, but it’s a legit question.
September 25th, 2022 at 10:30 AM ^
Sadly, Iowa's entirely conventional 27-0 win over Nevada last weekend has given the offense a considerable scoring lead over the defense.
Maybe if you awarded the defense half points for all scoring on offensive scoring drives of <20 yards and full points for all scoring drives of <10 yards, that might be something.
September 25th, 2022 at 10:31 AM ^
Kinnick against a really good Defense is terrifying with a QB making his 4th start, especially one who likes to pretend he's still in HS and can outrun everyone. This game has the smell of a 5 turnover loss and what will go down in history as McCarthy's worst ever game at UM. They are going to have him on a very short leash, dumping the ball or running straight upfield after read #2, and this is going to be a 12-10, 13-9 kind of game. Ugly. We do not need Sean Clifford ribs.
