Who would you reach out to first IF Jim leaves for NFL?
With speculation of Jim going back to the NFL yesterday afternoon and this morning...who would be your first call if Jim did leave for a job in the NFL? I think you would have to send a feeler to Sean Payton, Matt Rhule, Lane Kiffin, & Dave Aranda. Also internally have to look at Gattis as well.
Who else would be on your short list of candidates?
January 31st, 2022 at 10:24 AM ^
Sean Peyton, Lane Kiffin in that order
January 31st, 2022 at 10:54 AM ^
I thought the first name couldn’t be any dumber until I saw the second one
Exactly zero positive things would occur if kiffin went to Michigan
January 31st, 2022 at 11:07 AM ^
I didn't know you can see the future, Kiffin would kill it with JJ.
January 31st, 2022 at 11:10 AM ^
10 years ago Kiffin no. Today's Kiffin I'd be fine with. He ain't coming here though.

Nice internet muscles

Didn’t Sean Payton’s name come up years ago as a candidate because he dated a woman who was a Michigan fan or something like that? There some random connection.

Get the popcorn ready
January 31st, 2022 at 11:24 AM ^
Who would I reach out to?
I no particular order:
Jim Beam
Jose Cuervo
Jack Daniels
Johnny Walker
Sam Adams (darkhorse candidate)
Uncle Nearest (more than just a Rooney Rule!)

Elmer T. Lee.

CRG: Hopefully, not all on the same day.
:-)
January 31st, 2022 at 12:42 PM ^
Those first four could be a conference call...
February 1st, 2022 at 9:50 AM ^
But which one of the Walker boys? Blackie or Red?
January 31st, 2022 at 1:43 PM ^
I'd drop my season tickets pronto if Kiffin ever showed up on campus.
January 31st, 2022 at 9:40 PM ^
Lol what
January 31st, 2022 at 10:25 AM ^
1. Fickell (he will say no)
2. Campbell
3. Rhule
4. Gattis
January 31st, 2022 at 10:26 AM ^
I don't get this obsession with Campbell.
January 31st, 2022 at 10:27 AM ^
He is Winning 7 to 8 games at fucking Iowa State, and has upset teams with superior talent. He has roots to the Midwest and is an Ohio guy without OSU connections.
January 31st, 2022 at 10:32 AM ^
And at the same time has never beaten his biggest rival (fucking Iowa) let alone the monster which is Ohio State and completely fell apart in a year where he had like 4 pre season all Americans and the best roster (on paper) in ISU history.
I'd be fully on board with taking his DC but I will pass on Campbell as head coach
January 31st, 2022 at 10:37 AM ^
ok, let's hear who you'd rather get?
January 31st, 2022 at 10:42 AM ^
Matt Rhule has shown interest. Either him or just promote Gattis
January 31st, 2022 at 10:47 AM ^
Ok, Matt Rhule has shown interest. I'm high on him, too, and would likely have put him as #2 if not for the fact he ditched his team to go to the NFL.
Gattis has no head coaching experience. You'd prefer the head coach of michigan to be someone who has never been an HC before? One that many people wanted fired until the 2nd half of this season?
January 31st, 2022 at 11:35 AM ^
Lincoln Riley, Ryan Day, and Kirby Smart were all first-year head coaches.
January 31st, 2022 at 12:33 PM ^
So were helfrich, helton, and jimmy lake.
Not to mention, they all share that they took over very strong programs following legendary coaches with huge advantages in talent and recruiting
Also, i'm love to hear what you've seen from gattis that makes you think his coordinator resume is anywhere near as impressive as any of those 3
January 31st, 2022 at 2:21 PM ^
Ryan Day was born on 3rd.
January 31st, 2022 at 4:26 PM ^
But Ryan Day arrived on 3rd base...
January 31st, 2022 at 12:50 PM ^
Dabo Swinney was never a HC until Clemson made him a HC.
1993–1995 Alabama (GA)
1996 Alabama (WR/TE)
1997 Alabama (TE)
1998–2000 Alabama (WR)
2003–2006 Clemson (WR)
2007–2008 Clemson (AHC/WR)
2008 Clemson (interim HC/OC)
2009–present Clemson

Gattis over Campbell???
January 31st, 2022 at 11:51 AM ^
They got super unlucky this year. You'd hope a smart AD we see that
January 31st, 2022 at 10:43 AM ^
Co-sign to all of this (and I think the Ohio thing is underrated).
I'd also add that even though you'd obviously like to see that 7-8 wins be 10 wins every year, the losses to good teams are typically very competitive. So it's not like he's just smacking around randos and then losing 45-0 to oklahoma every year
January 31st, 2022 at 11:07 AM ^
Another candidate would be the guy who had a .615 winning percentage a few years ago at Vanderbilt, another historically awful program.
You know, James Franklin.
I'm not saying Campbell is a bad candidate. At all. I certainly hope they interview him if Harbaugh leaves. At the same time, I would like to temper expectations. Success at Iowa State does not necessarily translate to the kind of success that we as Michigan fans want to see.
January 31st, 2022 at 11:10 AM ^
Uhhh, i strongly disagree with this logic and think you're making the opposite of the point you're trying to.
PSU has done well under Franklin and there's a reason penn state gave franklin a huge extension and other teams have flirted with him
January 31st, 2022 at 11:41 AM ^
Someone is befuggled
January 31st, 2022 at 11:11 AM ^
Jim would have approximately the same record at Iowa St. that Campbell has. Campbell is capable of doing what Jim has at Michigan. Hopefully , taking us to championship level more than once in 7 years.
January 31st, 2022 at 12:08 PM ^
Jim did better AT STANFORD (which was a complete shitshow for many years before)
January 31st, 2022 at 12:53 PM ^
Stanford has every advantage over Iowa St. You know that. You are letting your emotions get in the way of your judgement.
January 31st, 2022 at 8:30 PM ^
Absolutely no one would've said that about Stanford at the time.
It has the advantages because Harbaugh made it that way.
January 31st, 2022 at 11:51 PM ^
Harbaugh did an amazing job at Stanford. It's also a program that had made occasional Rose Bowls in it's history, including 8 years earlier under Willingham. All time win pct: .578
Iowa State's entire football history before Campbell:
... *tumbleweed rolls by* ...
Haven't won a conference title since 1912
All time win pct: .456
January 31st, 2022 at 11:12 AM ^
Hes 42-34 at ISU. He's had some very good to great seasons by beating OU. He also consistently loses to Iowa and has several bad losses to teams like Louisiana and unranked KSU, unranked Texas/WV (and those are in his 8/9 win seasons).
He's done some nice things, but he's closer to a Hoke hire in my opinion. He's had some good seasons but he's not a sure thing, he's had some bad seasons and a lot of real head scratching losses. I think he significantly lowers the floor. We're talking about being okay with losses to Indiana and Maryland type programs.
January 31st, 2022 at 11:30 AM ^
- So he is Brady Hoke but at ISU?
January 31st, 2022 at 12:53 PM ^
Has never beaten his rival in Iowa.
January 31st, 2022 at 3:09 PM ^
Using this logic, we should have fired Harbaugh in 2019 or 2020 because he had never beaten Ohio State.
January 31st, 2022 at 10:30 AM ^
it's not obsession to say he's a very good, young coach who turned around a miserable ISU program
January 31st, 2022 at 10:59 AM ^
I don’t get the obsession with Fickell. Hiring someone with the strongest possible ties to our most hated rival? No thanks.
Campbell did well at Toledo and also Iowa State. He’s young, successful, and wont probably leave for the NFL in 1 year. He has certainly done more than Gattis(who has one decent year with us). I’m not sure why people think he should be doing even better at ISU than he is. Did I miss the part where ISU is a desirable place for elite recruits and a place with all the resources?
January 31st, 2022 at 11:15 AM ^
If it came down to Campbell or Gattis I'm with you. Gattis has only this year proven he's a decent OC, and people want to hand him the whole shebang? Those people are as insane as those who mentioned MacDonald.
That being said Fickell is a no brainer. Some guy name Bo something or other also came from the enemy and he worked out OK.
Aranda, Fickell, Rhule, Kiffin would probably start my list. Who knows if any of them are even possible, but I don't get paid to know either.
January 31st, 2022 at 11:40 AM ^
I just sense the dark side in Fickell, don’t trust him. I could see Fickell coming here for one year then taking the OSU job when Day leaves for the NFL. I think Campbell and Rhule are our most realistic options and I’d be good with those. Aranda is good, I don’t know how realistic it would be to pull him out of Texas but I’m not opposed to trying. Kiffin is just too slimy. I know not a popular opinion on here, but I think PJ Fleck has done more than enough to deserve a look as well.
January 31st, 2022 at 12:01 PM ^
I get the players buy in to the rah-rah style Fleck has, but I can't stand it. I know the players' opinion is infinitely more important than mine, but criminy it would be awful to listen to a mouth with a marketing campaign attached for years.
January 31st, 2022 at 12:52 PM ^
+1 for criminy and shebang
January 31st, 2022 at 2:42 PM ^

January 31st, 2022 at 12:31 PM ^
Fleck isn't on the Kiffin level of slimy, but he isn't who I'd refer to as someone with a strong moral compass either
