Defense was not good, but not as bad as the offense.  Poor tackling on Taylor and the other backs led to a lot more yards given up than they should have gotten.  They didn't put enough pressure on the Wiscy QB either.  The DL interior is very poor and frustrating given how much we've been recruiting the position.  Dwumfour might help, but he's not the answer by himself.

They're just poorly coached. That's all there is to it.

Brown was hired to stop a run-spread offense led by JT Barrett. He did reasonably well at that. Every other type off offense wrecks him though. This needs to be his last year here.

This was a horror show for sure, but saying that “every other type of offense wrecks him” is crazy. Last year, we did exactly to Wisconsin what they just did to us. Same for MSU and Penn State in 2018.

The problem is more complex. Having a crater on the roster at DT made us have to play far lighter than we should have... Wisconsin’s OL was blowing us up even when it was Groshek and Shaw running. And say what you want (and should) about him being a Benedict Arnold, but Matty was a hell of a DL coach.

Also, Taylor might be a future NFL all-pro. There were some times he just regapped like a boss.

This was a terrible game by Brown...but I have more faith in him than Nua, etc. right now.

I said it all off season, this defense was going to take a huge step back.  The Florida game last year was what we can expect.  We just don't have the bodies up front.  We really miss Hurst and Glasgow.  Kemp was a LB/DE recruit who is just not big enough.  Even Jeter was kinda a DE recruit.  Solomon not working our really hurt us, but why did we have so many eggs in that basket to begin with?  Last year we could somewhat mask that liability with all the other star talent on the team that are now in the pros.  Until our two frosh DTs come around, we are screwed.

And Brown is a one trick pony that doesn't know how to adapt.

The defense looked really poor today. Don Brown has received criticism recently and rightfully so; however, the defense has bailed us out in some games in the past or at least kept the game close. When has the offense ever come out and won a game and taken some pressure of them?

We look so anemic on offense. Right now there’s no reason to think the game against Iowa won’t be a similar affair. I don’t think Iowa scores as much. Disappointing times indeed.

Carlo Kemp is undersized and we’re playing him at NT with no size next to him and he plays every snap. He is going to break down physically. It’s not his fault.

Losing Greg Mattison was a much bigger loss than anyone expected. The d line hasn't looked this bad since the RR years. Army and Wisconsin gashed at will and the defense knew it was coming.

You might as well play the two freshman DT's and run a four man front. Were going to get killed the rest of the year if we continue with the 3-3-5. Our front is too small to run it full time not to mention our LB's outside of Glasgow suck! And what the hell happened to K. Hudson? he has been terrible! We need a four man front to protect what we have at the second level cause it hasn't been pretty.

How is Michigan a major program and yet doesn't have one competent DT....The directionals should be rolling out D-Lines our size....These basic flaws in recruiting might well doom Harbaugh more than the bad schemes, failure to find a competent offense etc.... I mean, what "major" program with UM's resources has a D-Line this bad....

Michigan also ran a lot of four man fronts and got blown off the ball on nearly every play. That was the most undisciplined I’ve seen a Michigan defense play since brown was hired. They were manhandled in the middle, but they also had terrible gap integrity throughout the game. Honestly, that was bad and strange. If you really don’t think Mazi or Hinton can play, I’m in favor of odd fronts that have blitzing linebackers. It allows Michigan to play Uche more, and I think he’s the lone play maker in the front seven. I also think danna should get more snaps. Idk. It’s strange. It’s like they don’t know what they have.

I think it has to be a given that Smith and Hinton aren't ready...I mean what more would it take to get them in..... I'm also puzzled as to Danna's lack of involvement....Without the two freshman DT's, we're in a situation where we have mediocre rotational pieces (Kemp, Jeter) and a converted fullback as our starting and only DT's....Sucks we have to waste Uche like this, imagine him with a real D-Line.....I think Hutchison's another guy that would look solid too if we had at least average starting DT's....Danna, I dunno, I thought he was supposed to be good....

Danna was the one guy to get any true push in this game. He was only in, by my estimation, for a quarter of the snaps, but he bulled the RG back on the Kwity Paye TFL for a UFR +2, and closed down the gaps on at least two separate Taylor runs (on both of which Taylor regapped - that guy is flat out good). In his limited snaps, he’s looked like a pretty competent DE to me.

It just sometimes seems to be too many risks with Don Brown's defensive schemes. I mean, there was a huge gap on a goal line defensive play, which allowed the Wisconsin QB to just basically walk into the end zone.

The Army game commentators were criticizing Michigan for having those same defensive line gaps on most likely short yardage running play calls by the offense.

I'm still a Don Brown guy. But this is the kind of shit I'm struggling with. Sure, Smith and Hinton aren't ready full time. You can't stick 300 pounds of beef in there even situationally? What the fuck was Glasgow supposed to accomplish there? Coan had an untouched 5 yard gain on a goal line sneak. And while that A gap was glaringly open, he could've walked in over the right side if he wanted to as Michigan got absolutely mauled. (sigh) It makes my head spin.

This defense is not talented.

How did anyone think this defense would be good let alone hearing asinine things like "They could be better than last year"

The DL is a complete abomination.  Seriously, who elected Carlo Kemp captain? (Harbaugh did)  Captains need to dominate on the field.  DLine absolutely brutal.  Linebackers no better.  Hudson, Glasgow, Ross, Anthony - not one special player among them.

The secondary is not the problem.

Sorry to name names and point fingers but it had to be said...

I'm not even mad at the players, I just am shocked that people fell for the hype that this defense would be good or even great.

And I'm off the Don Brown bandwagon...Jordan Glasgow on the DL on short yardage...Really coach? I have no faith in Don Brown.

Y'all also anointed Josh Gattis as a genius before he ever called a play...Again, everyone falling for the hype.

The OL is too big and slow and has never been able to pick up a stunt...Overrated.

Sorry to be a downer, but I don't expect to see big improvements.  It's now a talent issue.  The exodus of players leaving is being felt...

It all starts at the top.

Did the defense even play today?  This team is a disgrace.  They had two weeks and looked like they went on vacation for two weeks.  The coaches don't prepare the players and the players have no idea what they are doing.

They wanted to make a statement... they did. "WE SUCK"

I made a bet with myself: pluck a pube for every Wisconsin 1st down. I now look like I got a Brazilian wax. Thanks, Don Brown! I’m going to look great for my cruise in a couple weeks!

Oh wait, I’m a dude.... crap.

It’s simply lack of talent on defense especially up front.  They have recruited extremely poorly with defensive tackles and nose guards.

Harbaugh recruited mostly under a the radar 3 stars.  He hit the ultimate jackpot with Devin Bush.  But very one else is average at best.

The dline will be weak all year long.  Here is no fix for bad talent.
