OT: What music are you listening to?

Submitted by Magnus on February 20th, 2019 at 1:09 PM

It's a slow day, so I'm going to bring back an oldie but a goodie:

What music are you listening to lately? I'm a music nut and I'm always curious about where I can expand my horizons. These are the artists/albums I've been listening to lately

Pedro the Lion's new album "Phoenix"
Geoff Farina's "The Wishes of the Dead"
Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats self-titled album
Kids See Ghosts self-titled release
Weezer's "Teal Album"

The Association is, to me, a criminally underrated band - a lot of those harmonies are just like honey for the ears.  We sing a lyrically altered version of "Windy" to our dog and "Never My Love" is one of those song I'll often ring up on YouTube because I still can't get enough of listening to it.

For me, I'm often all over the place but I've been all about Kate Bush recently.

I always liked Petula Clark, and have gained a greater appreciation for her voice over the years. However, I can never hear her name without thinking of a joke comedian Carol Leifer told about her song "Don't Sleep in the Subway Darling":

“What kind of guys is she going out with that she’s gotta tell them these things? You know, ‘Don’t wash your face with Clorox. Oh, hey, don’t shave with a Ginsu knife. . . .”

Currently my favorite album of 2019 has to "Mint" by Alice Merton.

If you missed out on new music in 2018 - you have to check out IDLES - and do not miss them live when they come back to the states this year:

Here's some of the newer music I'm listening to. I'll try to focus on those that aren't as mainstream or obvious.

EDM: The Tech Thieves (Canadian Duo)

Rock: Ghost, The Score

Rap: Boogie

Pop: Quin XCII (From Michigan)

listened to a bunch of ALice in Chains last week a lot of their unplugged show. Pearl Jam's Unplugged is pretty great as well. Also listened to some early live shows of Pearl Jam with Abbruzzese on drums, the lineup with him was unreal.

Also listened to a ton of hip hop today  - Twinz (Deep Cover 98), Verbal Intercourse, Just Don't Give a F*** and Still Don't Give a F****, Flava in Ya Ear (Bad Boy Remix) and some cuts from Liquid Swords.

Listening to Spottieottiedopalicious as I write this.

My rock and roll days are mostly over. I can't really listen to old classic rock anymore--just seems like it was a phase of my life and those days are gone and I can't go back.

Most decidedly I listen to a lot of jazz from all eras, but I really love the era of Miles, Coltrane, etc. More contemporary I love Pat Metheny and Wynton Marsalis. But mostly I'll just put "Miles Davis Radio" on Spotify and listen to whatever comes on. Spotify also has a "Coffee Table Jazz" radio playlist that has a great, if decidedly mellow, vibe.

If I'm feeling spunkier I love outlaw country type music, everything from Johnny Cash/Waylon Jennings all the way to the present.

Both Pat and Wynton played concerts at Hill last fall. The UMS jazz series is terrifc. I knew nothing about Jazz until coming to A2 (first concert was Ella Fitzgerald) and since then I've been hooked.

The next concert is Cecile McLorin Salvant at the Mich Theater April 14th. Here she is w/ Wynton:

I would be surprised if my music interest is shared here but I certainly do not mind sharing.

New Retro Wave channel on youtube.  A bunch of synthwave, basically.  FM-84, Timecop 1983 and the Midnight.  If you are an Xennial (born 77-83) you might gravitate towards it as it's highly reminiscent of a lot of 80s music.

If you like Nathaniel Rateliff, you'll probably like The Dead South ... start with "Boots" and "In Hell I'll be in Good Company."

And/or you might like Pokey LeFarge ... try "Central Time" and "Must be a Reason".

I'm not even going to try to embed video, it just depresses me.

If you like Kraunghbin, you might, maybe like Gangstagrass ... try "Honey Babe" first.

ELP: Tarkus

... because I heard a cut on the radio from ELP Trilogy a few days ago, so now I'm going further back to their early stuff.

Was listening to some old live Metallica earlier. On their S&M album they played Ecstasy of Gold at the beginning, and I heard it at the beginning of this song. Do they do that to open all their concerts?

John Prine. I can’t believe it’s taken me this long in life to discover him.

William Onyeabor. Best walking through the city with my headphones on music. Specifically the song Fantastic Man. Makes me feel cool (note: I am not cool).

Been on a live album kick.

Sam Cooke Live at The Harlem Square (1963)

Donny Hathaway Live (1970)

Stax/Volt Review Norway (1967)

All three are pretty phenomenal. Also just listened to the new release of The Who Live at The Fillmore East (1968). Pretty darn good. 30+ minutes of My Generation, however, might be a bit much.

I've been revisiting Kraftwerk lately, even going back to their early days as Organisation.

Listened to the entirety of "Trans Europe Express" while I was driving about in the field today.

J. Cole - anything he touches right now is gold.

J.I.D.'s latest album is fire emoji

Meek Mill has some solid song on his newest album, Jay-Z's verse on "What's Free" is in the mix for verse of the year.

21 Savage's album is surprisingly solid.

Mac Miller's album is overrated as a body of work, but there are some great songs on that album.

Looking forward to Kendrick and Chance dropping this year, but right now J. Cole is hot enough that what he's putting out is enough to hold me over!
