OT: What music are you listening to?
It's a slow day, so I'm going to bring back an oldie but a goodie:
What music are you listening to lately? I'm a music nut and I'm always curious about where I can expand my horizons. These are the artists/albums I've been listening to lately
Pedro the Lion's new album "Phoenix"
Geoff Farina's "The Wishes of the Dead"
Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats self-titled album
Kids See Ghosts self-titled release
Weezer's "Teal Album"

The Association is, to me, a criminally underrated band - a lot of those harmonies are just like honey for the ears. We sing a lyrically altered version of "Windy" to our dog and "Never My Love" is one of those song I'll often ring up on YouTube because I still can't get enough of listening to it.
For me, I'm often all over the place but I've been all about Kate Bush recently.

I always liked Petula Clark, and have gained a greater appreciation for her voice over the years. However, I can never hear her name without thinking of a joke comedian Carol Leifer told about her song "Don't Sleep in the Subway Darling":
“What kind of guys is she going out with that she’s gotta tell them these things? You know, ‘Don’t wash your face with Clorox. Oh, hey, don’t shave with a Ginsu knife. . . .”

Currently my favorite album of 2019 has to "Mint" by Alice Merton.
If you missed out on new music in 2018 - you have to check out IDLES - and do not miss them live when they come back to the states this year:

Horace Parlan's "Us Three"
I'm enjoying it. I'd heard him only as a sideman prior to today.

Here's some of the newer music I'm listening to. I'll try to focus on those that aren't as mainstream or obvious.
EDM: The Tech Thieves (Canadian Duo)
Rock: Ghost, The Score
Rap: Boogie
Pop: Quin XCII (From Michigan)

Getting into a bit of psych rock. Specifically, King Gizzard.
February 20th, 2019 at 2:41 PM ^
The Menzingers’ “Rented World” and “On the Impossible Past” albums because they fucking rip
February 20th, 2019 at 3:22 PM ^
Saw them and Bouncing Souls in a 500 person bar/venue about four years ago. It was wild.
February 20th, 2019 at 3:33 PM ^
They’re whoop ass live. I’ve never been so sweaty in my life.

listened to a bunch of ALice in Chains last week a lot of their unplugged show. Pearl Jam's Unplugged is pretty great as well. Also listened to some early live shows of Pearl Jam with Abbruzzese on drums, the lineup with him was unreal.
Also listened to a ton of hip hop today - Twinz (Deep Cover 98), Verbal Intercourse, Just Don't Give a F*** and Still Don't Give a F****, Flava in Ya Ear (Bad Boy Remix) and some cuts from Liquid Swords.
Listening to Spottieottiedopalicious as I write this.

My rock and roll days are mostly over. I can't really listen to old classic rock anymore--just seems like it was a phase of my life and those days are gone and I can't go back.
Most decidedly I listen to a lot of jazz from all eras, but I really love the era of Miles, Coltrane, etc. More contemporary I love Pat Metheny and Wynton Marsalis. But mostly I'll just put "Miles Davis Radio" on Spotify and listen to whatever comes on. Spotify also has a "Coffee Table Jazz" radio playlist that has a great, if decidedly mellow, vibe.
If I'm feeling spunkier I love outlaw country type music, everything from Johnny Cash/Waylon Jennings all the way to the present.

Both Pat and Wynton played concerts at Hill last fall. The UMS jazz series is terrifc. I knew nothing about Jazz until coming to A2 (first concert was Ella Fitzgerald) and since then I've been hooked.
The next concert is Cecile McLorin Salvant at the Mich Theater April 14th. Here she is w/ Wynton:

Bela Fleck and Abigail Washburn. Great concert at Hill Auditorium
February 20th, 2019 at 5:37 PM ^
Stop by and say hello I'm in Mezz at Hill right side doors and I read tickets at R3 at the Mich.Th. for all UMS gigs since the 80's. Bela and Abigail were great. Tonight is Las Cafeteras at the Mich. should be good.
February 21st, 2019 at 8:38 AM ^
Very cool. You must have some great stories. I will at Mich Th. on 4/14 to see CMS. and will look for you.... How did you get this wonderful gig?

I would be surprised if my music interest is shared here but I certainly do not mind sharing.

My kids listen to this song all day long. It sort of grows on you.

My almost two year old twinkies listen to Wheels On The Bus a lot. It drives me fucking insane.
February 20th, 2019 at 3:35 PM ^
Is it the Cedarmont Kids version? Or those creepy youtube versions with the video that has nothing to do with the audio?
February 20th, 2019 at 8:22 PM ^
You want insanity? Put this on a loop...
February 21st, 2019 at 8:44 AM ^
I was at a pro hockey game and they put on Baby Shark. Evidently there is a dance of some sort as well.

New Retro Wave channel on youtube. A bunch of synthwave, basically. FM-84, Timecop 1983 and the Midnight. If you are an Xennial (born 77-83) you might gravitate towards it as it's highly reminiscent of a lot of 80s music.
February 20th, 2019 at 3:24 PM ^
If you like Nathaniel Rateliff, you'll probably like The Dead South ... start with "Boots" and "In Hell I'll be in Good Company."
And/or you might like Pokey LeFarge ... try "Central Time" and "Must be a Reason".
I'm not even going to try to embed video, it just depresses me.
If you like Kraunghbin, you might, maybe like Gangstagrass ... try "Honey Babe" first.

I sure am, especially after having just listened to the entire side one of that album on my drive home. Keith Emerson (RIP) was a keyboard genius!

Was listening to some old live Metallica earlier. On their S&M album they played Ecstasy of Gold at the beginning, and I heard it at the beginning of this song. Do they do that to open all their concerts?
February 20th, 2019 at 3:59 PM ^
Yes that's their standard concert opening song. Sets a great tone for the show.
February 21st, 2019 at 12:50 PM ^
They do a terrific job with Ecstasy of Gold.
February 20th, 2019 at 3:54 PM ^
John Prine. I can’t believe it’s taken me this long in life to discover him.
William Onyeabor. Best walking through the city with my headphones on music. Specifically the song Fantastic Man. Makes me feel cool (note: I am not cool).
February 20th, 2019 at 8:05 PM ^
Listened to Great Days: The John Prine Anthology last night to bring back some memories of my college radio days and catch up on music he'd written decades after I did my final college radio show like this one:
February 20th, 2019 at 8:38 PM ^
John prine is going to be at Bonnaroo and I definitely plan on checking his show out but honestly I'll probably miss it because that's just how festivals go

Been on a live album kick.
Sam Cooke Live at The Harlem Square (1963)
Donny Hathaway Live (1970)
Stax/Volt Review Norway (1967)
All three are pretty phenomenal. Also just listened to the new release of The Who Live at The Fillmore East (1968). Pretty darn good. 30+ minutes of My Generation, however, might be a bit much.
February 20th, 2019 at 4:30 PM ^
Brandi Carlile....saw her this past summer, fantastic concerts...By the way I forgive you is a great album.
February 20th, 2019 at 4:32 PM ^
I've been revisiting Kraftwerk lately, even going back to their early days as Organisation.
Listened to the entirety of "Trans Europe Express" while I was driving about in the field today.
February 20th, 2019 at 4:36 PM ^
kraftwerk is badass. been at least 15 years since i've listened but good stuff.

February 20th, 2019 at 4:57 PM ^
Wand's rad new single "Scarecrow".
February 20th, 2019 at 5:01 PM ^
J. Cole - anything he touches right now is gold.
J.I.D.'s latest album is fire emoji
Meek Mill has some solid song on his newest album, Jay-Z's verse on "What's Free" is in the mix for verse of the year.
21 Savage's album is surprisingly solid.
Mac Miller's album is overrated as a body of work, but there are some great songs on that album.
Looking forward to Kendrick and Chance dropping this year, but right now J. Cole is hot enough that what he's putting out is enough to hold me over!
