OT: Video Games
So... my life has changed because of a video game. I am not a big game guy because I usually don’t have the time. I have some free time currently, so... Last week my buddy finally convinced me to play Red Dead Redemption 2. I did not play the original. This game is the greatest game I have ever played by FAR!!! Story, choices, gameplay, free roam and graphics are unreal. I think this is the closest I will get to going to West World, which I want to bad.
2 questions. 1 Have you played RDR2 and what are your thoughts on it? 2. What other game have you played that changed your life?
February 4th, 2019 at 5:05 PM ^
Get bent if you don’t like Red Dead ?
and yes, I know West World isn’t real. But, why not? That place would be a hit.

Get your video game playing in now, Shea. Spring ball starts soon, and then it's time to put in work!
February 4th, 2019 at 5:58 PM ^
He just proved he isn't Shea because Shea plays a shit ton of Fortnite.
February 4th, 2019 at 6:37 PM ^
...and Shea just proved that he could fool you into thinking Mineral King isn't really Shea.
February 4th, 2019 at 10:03 PM ^
Mineral King = Arthur Morgan, confirmed. But then that means Arthur Morgan = Shea Patterson so...
February 5th, 2019 at 8:36 AM ^
Shit, Shea has tuberculosis--that could hurt our championship chances
February 4th, 2019 at 5:08 PM ^
did you pet the dog?
February 4th, 2019 at 5:10 PM ^
Hell yeah!! All of them that I see.
February 4th, 2019 at 5:09 PM ^
outstanding horse-brushing simulator. otherwise i found it incredibly boring. god of war & hollow knight -- that's where it's at for this year.
fallout 3 & last of us are only games that come close to "life changing" for me.
February 4th, 2019 at 6:25 PM ^
Thank you! For how much hype Red Dead has gotten, it's so boring. No, I don't want to change my clothes, cut my hair, shave, or brush my horse.
February 4th, 2019 at 8:48 PM ^
I haven't played video games since Super NES, but everything you just described sounds like the kind of game I'd like to play. I prefer low-key activities you can perform without murdering someone or someone trying to murder you.
February 4th, 2019 at 9:54 PM ^
The game is super popular so you should give it a shot. I'm an FPS guy myself...love the constant action and competitiveness, so Red Dead really isn't doing it for me.
February 4th, 2019 at 10:43 PM ^
Im the same way, man. For the last few years, story driven games have really fallen off for me and I'm more into competitive multiplayer. Have you tried playing Rocket League? It's one of those "instant gratification" games, highly competitive, almost non-existent skill ceiling. I've been playing it for about 2 years and it's still my go-to.
And somehow I'm still pretty mediocre at it.
February 5th, 2019 at 10:56 AM ^
FPS gamer as well. I've been playing Destiny since I stopped playing Halo 4 a little over four years ago. Just checked out Anthem over the last couple of weekends and although it has potential it's very basic at this point. Very little endgame content and no multiplayer component which is too bad since it would be epic with all those Javelins going at it.
February 5th, 2019 at 6:44 AM ^
My son plays it and got through all of the (levels? he called the something else) edit: missions
I liked that he could play as a good guy and help people out. He was routinely going back to the base camp and stocking up their medicine and cash.
He’s unlocked everything and is roaming around. He loves it.
February 4th, 2019 at 7:44 PM ^
The fallout series (except for New Vegas) is full of great games. Same with the Legend of Zelda.
February 4th, 2019 at 10:35 PM ^
And here I was thinking I was crazy for not liking it either. I mean, I really wanted to. The graphics are amazing, the dialogue is on point, hell, the story is probably really good. I dont know if it's my age now or what, but I just cant grind a game out anymore.
"Ride 10 minutes across the map, punch guy in face, take money, ride 10 minutes back." Rinse and repeat.
It also seems like Rockstar sacrificed fun for realism. Realism sounds cool in theory, but no, I don't feel like eating, bathing, or watching a 5 minute deer skinning montage every time I hunt.
Also, I agree with you on The Last of Us. TLOU is absolutely the best game I've ever played. I can't wait for the 2nd one
February 4th, 2019 at 10:37 PM ^
You youngsters need to slow down. Learn how to take a moment to watch the sun setting over a river while a doe browses in the meadow. While playing a video game. Escapist virtual lives are about enjoying the little things.
February 5th, 2019 at 12:46 AM ^
Been years since I played many games (played a lot in the Half-Life, StarCraft, System Shock era, Wii and Xbox 360 eras)
Picked up a new PC this fall, and started playing Hollow Knight.
Hollow Knight is now my favourite game of all time.
February 5th, 2019 at 9:39 AM ^
If you like Fallout 3, you must play Fallout 4. Just as good, if not better.
February 4th, 2019 at 5:16 PM ^
I love the original but haven't had time to play this version as a very busy hotshot executive. I hope to get some downtime around 2021
February 4th, 2019 at 5:17 PM ^
Counterstrike.
February 5th, 2019 at 9:07 AM ^
Without question. Although fewer and fewer recruits seem to share this opinion.
February 4th, 2019 at 5:17 PM ^
Didn't play RDR and haven't played 2 yet. Just re-played the Witcher 3 which I'd still put as my #1. Just started AC Odyssey, so far so good. RDR2 will probably be next on my list.
February 4th, 2019 at 6:11 PM ^
Agree re:Witcher 3. I have RDR2 sitting in a drawer, but I'm waiting until I collect my dissertation data to start it because I know I'll lose a ton of productivity when I do.
February 5th, 2019 at 6:44 AM ^
I picked up Witcher 3 a little while ago and I am about 15 hours into the game. What I told someone this, they said I was just getting started. I stopped playing Witcher so I could play the new PS4 God of war which is an amazing game. I am also slowly working my way through the new spider man game which is good. It is so satisfying to web swing around the city.
February 4th, 2019 at 7:46 PM ^
Witcher 3 was awesome. I unfortunately haven't played any AC's since Black Flag though.
February 4th, 2019 at 8:06 PM ^
February 4th, 2019 at 8:49 PM ^
I agree. I would cruise around looking for other vessels to take down.
February 5th, 2019 at 8:55 AM ^
Fighting the legendary ships is so difficult, especially the one with two at the same time. One of those ships is the fast vessel, trying to ram you, while the other is slow, has an extraordinary amount of firepower and uses high-powered mortars. Extremely difficult challenge.
February 5th, 2019 at 9:14 AM ^
I'm maybe 2-4 hours into Odyssey, but (apparently, I haven't gotten to this part yet) it's got a big naval element as well, basically beacuse Black Flag was so fun. Dudes with arrows instead of cannons, but similar.
February 4th, 2019 at 8:43 PM ^
I wouldn't say any game changed my life, but Witcher 3 is the best. Anxiously awaiting Cyberpunk 2077 to be released.
As for RDR 2, I'll probably play it when it's out on PC, supposedly later this year.
February 4th, 2019 at 9:39 PM ^
I hadn't played any of the Witcher games until last month. Got a great deal on Witcher 3 complete edition. One of the best games I ever played, don't know why it took so long to try it. Long ass game lots of fun. Now I am on Witcher 2. I also like all the Batman Arkham games and Fallout games. Still gotta try Red Dead 2, the first one was great.
February 4th, 2019 at 10:28 PM ^
Witcher 3 easily my top story driven game I've played.
Doom2 changed my life.
February 4th, 2019 at 5:18 PM ^
1.) Red Dead 2 was amazing. Incredible amount of detail and things to do. Hot-tip: Do the white logo missions when you can because some of them go away forever the farther you get into the story. I've beaten the game and don't play online so it's a paper weight for me now until I pick it up again in a year. Any one have experience with it online? Worth it?
2.) Without saying a sports game (everyone would and should say NCAA Football) it'd probably be Assassins Creed. The franchise is a bit saturated at this point but at the height of it, AC was the truth. Call of Duty 3 as well.
February 4th, 2019 at 11:10 PM ^
I ranked up relatively highly online and stopped about two-three weeks ago. It's still in beta and will be for another month or two while they test and develop more content (including multiplayer story + game modes).
Not a total waste of time if you play online, but it will be more engaging later. I'm actually telling my friends not to play online now because I don't want them to lose interest and I'm assuming it will be better later. In the meantime, it's good if you don't mind grinding.
February 5th, 2019 at 11:29 AM ^
I thought the beta period already ended....
February 4th, 2019 at 5:20 PM ^
Tecmo Super Bowl changed my life. Never before had I seen a single play last the duration of an entire quarter.
Best game ever.
February 4th, 2019 at 5:23 PM ^
There are some guys that played for Iowa or Wisconsin about 30-35 years that have seen entire drives last at least most of a quarter, but yeah, Tecmo Bowl took this to another level in a way.
February 4th, 2019 at 7:00 PM ^
Holding at 0:50 though.
February 4th, 2019 at 8:15 PM ^
What is wrong with me? I couldn't stop watching that.
February 4th, 2019 at 5:20 PM ^
Crown this youtuber. He smartly explains the many infuriating flaws of RDR2.
GIST: The gameplay is broken.
I'm over the many lemmings in the video game industry trying to label every new hyped but deeply flawed AAA game as a masterpiece. I'll neither forget nor forgive all the reviewers who proclaimed Fallout 4 as a 10/10 genre-defining game when the game was actually awful and a clear sign of Bethesda's precipitous decline. (LOL @ the dumpster fire that is Fallout 76.)

As one person in the comments succinctly explained:
RDR2 features narrative highs and gameplay lows.
-----
Witcher 3 is the best video game I've ever played. It's not my favorite - I like Arkane's Dishonored or Supergiant's Transistor as my favorites - but Witcher 3 is the best.
In general, I dislike the fantasy genre (hence, I don't care about Game of Thrones) but the Witcher series was so well done that it changed my perception of what the genre could be.
I'm eagerly anticipating CDPR's Cyberpunk 2077.

MIND YOUR TONGUE (fingers).
Game of Thrones is real.
February 4th, 2019 at 5:25 PM ^
I mostly play DDR. I'm guessing it has almost nothing in common with these games.
February 4th, 2019 at 5:25 PM ^
Any blades of steel fans out there?!
February 4th, 2019 at 5:26 PM ^
Only for the fights.
February 4th, 2019 at 5:32 PM ^
Hell yeah. Played the hell out of that game with my buddies. Only lost 2 games out of maybe 100+ and I was pissed I lost those ones.
February 4th, 2019 at 6:00 PM ^
Turns console on. Volume blasts out "BLAAAADES of steel!!!"
February 4th, 2019 at 8:01 PM ^
Wifes in the kitchen, I just said Blaaaades of steel! out load. She says "Not funny!"
She wanted to play me in that game so I let her get about a 20 goal lead. Knowing I could come back and win I made a "bet". She took the bet and lost and hasn't forgotten about it. Haaa!

Great hockey game. NHL 90whatever games are the best from that era, though.
