OT: Video Games

Submitted by Mineral King on February 4th, 2019 at 5:05 PM

So... my life has changed because of a video game. I am not a big game guy because I usually don’t have the time. I have some free time currently, so... Last week my buddy finally convinced me to play Red Dead Redemption 2. I did not play the original. This game is the greatest game I have ever played by FAR!!! Story, choices, gameplay, free roam and graphics are unreal. I think this is the closest I will get to going to West World, which I want to bad.

2 questions. 1 Have you played RDR2 and what are your thoughts on it? 2. What other game have you played that changed your life?

It's really hard to rank these because they fit into so many different genres, but here are my personal power rankings. Note that I have Witcher 2 and RDR2, but haven't started playing them yet:

1. Witcher 3

2. Mass Effect 2

3. Smash Bros Melee

4. Final Fantasy VI

5. Legend of Zelda, Ocarina of Time

6. Final Fantasy VII

7. Legend of Zelda, Breath of the Wild

8. Goldeneye

9. Halo 2

10. Skyrim

11. Halo

12. Mike Tyson's Punchout

13. Mass Effect 3

14. Final Fantasy IX

15. Super Metroid

Good call avoiding Andromeda. Game was not good. I couldn't finish it.

ME 2 is one of my all time favorites and like you said the ending of ME 3 was rough but the game overall was still good.

Similar story with Fallout. The PS3 Fallout games were mostly excellent. Fallout 4 was not great. And I am not buying Fallout 76.

I have three:

1) Original Zelda - as a kid, definitely hooked me on video games for the rest of my life.

2) Goldeneye - first experience sitting around playing with friends, taking turns on the missions.

3) Half-life (the original) - played endless hours while attending UM. I still remember being in awe at the first cut scene while traveling on the tram looking around at the different robots doing things.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

i never had played much beyond the simple right-left scroller or such games before stumbling onto this gem for N64.  It was a generational game that changed the way adventure games were played going forward, many such innovations like target locking are still used today.  Add in the depth of the side quests on top of the actual story of the game and you understand how the game was truly a perfect experience.

That game is absolutely amazing. I really wish an HD remake was made. People have made their own HD versions of it and they look fantastic. Google them if you haven't seen any. Nintendo has said for years they have no interest in remaking that one. Hopefully some day that will change. My favorite Zelda game is Wind Waker. Ocarina is my second favorite.

So funny you brought this up. I'm like you where there just isn't time and I haven't played a video game in about years. I bought my PS4 for Fallout 4 and played that non-stop ~4 years ago. A buddy of mine told me I'd feel the same way with RDR2 and I need to play it.

I'd say I've always had a "beyond love", obsession with the Fallout games. I remember tearing up at the end of one of them lol. To give you an idea I straight up bought a PS4 and took off a week from work to play fallout 4 when it came out. In the first week I played maybe 60 hours and probably well over 200 total hours.

I loved fallout new vegas that shit was life changing. I have an obsession with that end of the world "stuff" though. Movies, video games, anything with that theme I've always loved.

How did you feel about Fallout 4 after playing it?

I'm with you, Fallout 3 and New Vegas were mind blowing to me. I loved those games and I love anything post apocalyptic. But Fallout 4 just never grabbed me like the previous 2. I think I just expected more growth and evolution and it felt a little stale.

I wonder if anyone will remember Socom for playstation. Seriously legit online play for it's time. Another is Gears of War.

Currently though i just play PUBG, FIFA, and Madden on the Xbox One.

RDR2 is awesome (RDR1 is as well), some other recommendations of the best recentish games that are amazing and worth it for story/gameplay would be Bioshock 1 and The Witcher 3. Tons more obviously, but those two are ones that I always go back to.

Skyrim VR.

You mod that game right and it is amazing. It is especially amazing in that it is a game that has been around for nigh 8 years. The modding community has put a real shine on it, if you are into VR, I'd highly recommend it.

Finished RDR2 and loved it.  One of my favorite games ever.  Loved RDR, too.

Other games I've played over the years that changed gaming for me for various reasons:

  • Tecmo Super Bowl (NES)
  • NHL '93, '94, '95, '96 (Genesis)
  • Streets of Rage series (Genesis)
  • Sim City (PC - the original version and SC2000)
  • Doom (PC)
  • Civilization (PC) - Played I, II, and III
  • WarCraft/WarCraft II (PC)
  • Grand Theft Auto III (PC) - This game really changed everything about gaming
  • GTA: San Andreas (Playstation 2)
  • GTA V (Xbox One)
  • Gears of War 2 (first game I got for Xbox 360 and played Horde mode into the ground.  I've played all the others, too)
  • Mass Effect trilogy (Xbox 360 - ME2 being the best, IMO - Mass Effect Gamerpoop series on YouTube is hilarious)

RDR2 is fantastic. Skyrim changed the way I look at rpg. Witcher 3. And this is a random one but Fifa 18 made me fall in love with soccer, so technically it changed my life the most lol

Life is strange changed me. Highly recommend the first one to anyone. It is a telltale game but it gets real deep. But of real games I would say either destiny(original) or the mass effect series.

Looking back on the question, "life changing" could only be GoldenEye for me.  It was so many hours playing with my friends and led to endless hours and days spent in the Call of Duty universe.  That first person shooter game has had an impact on how I've used time in my life.
