Long week....for the squirrels...picture from yesterday on campus.

231/365/3883 (January 28, 2019) - Fox Squirrels on a Cold, Snowy Day in Ann Arbor at the University of Michigan - January 28th, 2019

Been on campus 13 years (staff - not horrible student) and this is only the third time school has been canceled.  I think they are opting for better safe than sorry approach.

I recall classes being cancelled in the early 90’s for similar temperatures. I went to tOSU ( I know I know), but they scrolled it across the David letterman show around 11:45 pm, and the bars were never so packed on a Tuesday night. It’s sbout the children I guess

Freshman year 2004. Walking to one of my finals, it was -10 degrees with a windchill of -40. Just insult to injury. I went to graduate school in Florida and still live here [insert shades emoji].

Back in 1994 when it was -30 something (-69 with the wind chill), we still had classes.  I had one class that day and walked across campus to get there.  Back then I was an idiot who never wore a hat, gloves or zipped my coat.  I did that day.

On January 19th, 1994 it was -61 degrees and the DIDN'T CANCEL CLASSES!  In fact there were negative temperatures for what seemed like the entire winter.   I lived in, wait for it, West Quad, and the dorm couldn't pump out enough heat so it only got up to ~61 degrees inside.  Yeah, it was 100 degrees warmer, but you still didn't ever get fully warm.

We were tougher back then.   People played in bowl games.  We walked up hill* to class both ways.  No one transferred and we were all champions.

*Hill street.   I actually just cut through the union, but it was possible to walk up Hill Street both ways.

We hit -36 one day in 1994 and they didn't cancel class. My recollection was that class was never cancelled because the school had been sued by someone for cancelling due to weather.

edit: I think WestQuad is including windchill...but yeah holy hell is was cold. The school had no mercy man....

I can kinda get it..and given that OPM told everyone to go home early today due to the chance of about an inch of snow I can't really complain.

But I know some of the technicians I work with in the Midwest have to go out there and work no matter what the wind chill temperature is. I imagine the majority of private sector employees will probably still be expected to show up. It's not exactly much of a preparation for life after college if you get to stay home because it's cold in a place widely known to be very cold in winter.

It was the same temperature back in '94 and they DIDN'T cancel classes!

Cold Outbreak of January 1994
Here is the official National Weather Service record of this nearly unprecedented cold outbreak in January 1994:

An arctic air mass of historic proportions settled over the state of Michigan from the 13th to 20th of January. Low temperatures on the morning of the 19th reached near all-time record low levels nearly statewide as readings of 20 to 40 below zero were quite common. Numerous daytime, and monthly record lows, were broken as well as numerous daytime record low maximum temperatures. The all-time record low for the state of Michigan was also challenged on January 19th with Amasa, Michigan coming in with a remarkably low temperature of -53 F surpassing the old record of -51 F. Unfortunately, this reading can not become an official state record low since the thermometer site was too close to the observer's house! At Detroit, this is the second longest stretch of below zero temperatures in its recorded weather history.

I was a senior during 2014/2015 and they canceled class for the first time since 72 (I think?). Ironically they had classes the day prior which was colder.

I walked and actually did some hw in the fishbowl during the day we had canceled class. Why I did not go to the bar or get smashed at home I don't know.

So why do people live in the Midwest? I live in CA. I know the obvious answer. The fall is beautiful. It is. It has the midwestern charm. The lakes.

All that being said, why do people live in the Midwest? Couldn't employers relocate the facilities? I'd rather deal with those earthquakes than shoveling snow and freezing my _____ off.

Ok. Time to attack me before the game.

This is soft.

Shit like this is why we lose to Ohio State every year.  A big culture of softness where are all the students are coddled like babies.  Maybe if anybody at this school had actually experienced hardship before, we wouldn't fall over at the first sign of trouble.

41 years ago this week much of the Great Lakes region was shutdown because of historic blizzard.  We missed plenty of school days because of snow and ice storms, I don't ever recall not enjoying the pleasures of education because it was cold outside.  I really thought snowflakes would enjoy colder weather.

Virtual classes will likely be held at some level. I am old and out of the loop but I do know that my 6th grade grandson in Podunkville, Kansas does a lot of his work on-line.

I can't really complain about stuff being cancelled just because it's going to be a little cold outside, because I rescheduled my dentist appointment so my buns can stay toasty warm.

My senior year at Michigan in January 1994 it was -19F actual temperature one night.  It was single digits during the day and negative temperatures during the night for at least one week.  Classes weren't canceled for a single day.

And I walked uphill to class and back home twice a day.  Now get off my lawn!!!

so snowflakes can’t deal with actual snowflakes?

fwiw, I used to WALK to Zingerman’s on Sunday during the winter from west quad. The cold and snow  wouldn’t stop me from getting a Sammie
