U-M cancels classes tomorrow and Thursday
Ridiculous.
January 29th, 2019 at 4:08 PM ^
Well then, there's only one thing left to do:
January 29th, 2019 at 4:14 PM ^
Time to hangout out in the skyways.
January 29th, 2019 at 4:06 PM ^
Why is it ridiculous and why do you care so much?
January 29th, 2019 at 4:29 PM ^
Because royle rumbles should always be held outdoors.
January 29th, 2019 at 4:07 PM ^
Classes canceled for Wednesday and Thursday... game still on for tonight? Gonna be an even better crowd tonight!
January 29th, 2019 at 4:09 PM ^
This game better be on still. The 9:00 tip time is fucking absurd, though.
January 29th, 2019 at 4:10 PM ^
Since the Emergency Reduction of Operations commences at 12:00 am tomorrow, I'd say the basketball game is not in jeopardy.
January 29th, 2019 at 5:08 PM ^
I was a student when they cancelled class for the first time in 30+ years. The day ended up being 50 degrees and sunny. Thought they’d never cancel class again haha.
January 29th, 2019 at 6:47 PM ^
Hope he doesn’t freeze his nuts!
January 29th, 2019 at 4:22 PM ^
I recall classes being cancelled in the early 90’s for similar temperatures. I went to tOSU ( I know I know), but they scrolled it across the David letterman show around 11:45 pm, and the bars were never so packed on a Tuesday night. It’s sbout the children I guess
January 29th, 2019 at 4:43 PM ^
Freshman year 2004. Walking to one of my finals, it was -10 degrees with a windchill of -40. Just insult to injury. I went to graduate school in Florida and still live here [insert shades emoji].
January 29th, 2019 at 4:48 PM ^
Can’t tell me it doesn’t occasionally get down to at least -50 in your Siberian gulags, Putin.....
January 29th, 2019 at 4:51 PM ^
Back in 1994 when it was -30 something (-69 with the wind chill), we still had classes. I had one class that day and walked across campus to get there. Back then I was an idiot who never wore a hat, gloves or zipped my coat. I did that day.
January 29th, 2019 at 5:14 PM ^
I'm going to go ahead and call hyperbole on this one. It's never been that cold in Ann Arbor.
January 29th, 2019 at 5:19 PM ^
No hyperbole. See below.
January 29th, 2019 at 5:24 PM ^
-22 is not "-30 something." -22 is the record. I knew that and that's why I called hyperbole.
January 29th, 2019 at 5:52 PM ^
You need to get out more. I recommend tomorrow in Ann Arbor..... ;)
February 4th, 2019 at 1:28 PM ^
I actually did get out that day. It was -1000 degrees!
January 29th, 2019 at 5:17 PM ^
On January 19th, 1994 it was -61 degrees and the DIDN'T CANCEL CLASSES! In fact there were negative temperatures for what seemed like the entire winter. I lived in, wait for it, West Quad, and the dorm couldn't pump out enough heat so it only got up to ~61 degrees inside. Yeah, it was 100 degrees warmer, but you still didn't ever get fully warm.
We were tougher back then. People played in bowl games. We walked up hill* to class both ways. No one transferred and we were all champions.
*Hill street. I actually just cut through the union, but it was possible to walk up Hill Street both ways.
January 29th, 2019 at 5:19 PM ^
We hit -36 one day in 1994 and they didn't cancel class. My recollection was that class was never cancelled because the school had been sued by someone for cancelling due to weather.
edit: I think WestQuad is including windchill...but yeah holy hell is was cold. The school had no mercy man....
January 29th, 2019 at 5:37 PM ^
I can kinda get it..and given that OPM told everyone to go home early today due to the chance of about an inch of snow I can't really complain.
But I know some of the technicians I work with in the Midwest have to go out there and work no matter what the wind chill temperature is. I imagine the majority of private sector employees will probably still be expected to show up. It's not exactly much of a preparation for life after college if you get to stay home because it's cold in a place widely known to be very cold in winter.
January 29th, 2019 at 5:45 PM ^
It was the same temperature back in '94 and they DIDN'T cancel classes!
Cold Outbreak of January 1994
Here is the official National Weather Service record of this nearly unprecedented cold outbreak in January 1994:
An arctic air mass of historic proportions settled over the state of Michigan from the 13th to 20th of January. Low temperatures on the morning of the 19th reached near all-time record low levels nearly statewide as readings of 20 to 40 below zero were quite common. Numerous daytime, and monthly record lows, were broken as well as numerous daytime record low maximum temperatures. The all-time record low for the state of Michigan was also challenged on January 19th with Amasa, Michigan coming in with a remarkably low temperature of -53 F surpassing the old record of -51 F. Unfortunately, this reading can not become an official state record low since the thermometer site was too close to the observer's house! At Detroit, this is the second longest stretch of below zero temperatures in its recorded weather history.

I just read this. I posted later on in this thread how it was -19F actual temperature one night in AA. My friend's key broke in his apartment door lock because it was so cold and he couldn't get in. It was fucking cold yet classes weren't canceled. That's how we rolled back in the day.
January 29th, 2019 at 6:04 PM ^
Can they cancel my work too? I dont feel like going outside tomorrow either.
January 29th, 2019 at 6:50 PM ^
I was a senior during 2014/2015 and they canceled class for the first time since 72 (I think?). Ironically they had classes the day prior which was colder.
I walked and actually did some hw in the fishbowl during the day we had canceled class. Why I did not go to the bar or get smashed at home I don't know.
January 29th, 2019 at 7:02 PM ^
even Michigan Tech is closed up here
January 29th, 2019 at 7:05 PM ^
So why do people live in the Midwest? I live in CA. I know the obvious answer. The fall is beautiful. It is. It has the midwestern charm. The lakes.
All that being said, why do people live in the Midwest? Couldn't employers relocate the facilities? I'd rather deal with those earthquakes than shoveling snow and freezing my _____ off.
Ok. Time to attack me before the game.
January 29th, 2019 at 7:21 PM ^
This is soft.
Shit like this is why we lose to Ohio State every year. A big culture of softness where are all the students are coddled like babies. Maybe if anybody at this school had actually experienced hardship before, we wouldn't fall over at the first sign of trouble.
January 29th, 2019 at 7:39 PM ^
OSU canceled classes too.
January 29th, 2019 at 7:31 PM ^
Wow. They never canceled back in the day. Still -30 degree temperatures and below will do that to you.
January 29th, 2019 at 7:37 PM ^
Good, kids should be nice and drunk for the game tonight.
January 29th, 2019 at 7:54 PM ^
41 years ago this week much of the Great Lakes region was shutdown because of historic blizzard. We missed plenty of school days because of snow and ice storms, I don't ever recall not enjoying the pleasures of education because it was cold outside. I really thought snowflakes would enjoy colder weather.
January 29th, 2019 at 11:38 PM ^
I was born in that '78 storm, and I also believe that's why winter has always been my favorite season.
January 29th, 2019 at 11:49 PM ^
I was a Freshman in HS that year. Remember that blizzard well - still the record low barometric pressure for Detroit. That, I believe, was the last day UM cancelled classes for years due to some dweeb wanting his 1 or 2 days of tuition back.
January 29th, 2019 at 8:16 PM ^
Virtual classes will likely be held at some level. I am old and out of the loop but I do know that my 6th grade grandson in Podunkville, Kansas does a lot of his work on-line.
January 29th, 2019 at 10:15 PM ^
I can't really complain about stuff being cancelled just because it's going to be a little cold outside, because I rescheduled my dentist appointment so my buns can stay toasty warm.
January 29th, 2019 at 10:47 PM ^
My senior year at Michigan in January 1994 it was -19F actual temperature one night. It was single digits during the day and negative temperatures during the night for at least one week. Classes weren't canceled for a single day.
And I walked uphill to class and back home twice a day. Now get off my lawn!!!
January 29th, 2019 at 11:18 PM ^
Snowflakes.
January 30th, 2019 at 1:28 AM ^
Ridiculous? If you're outside for more than 10 minutes, any exposed skin gets frost bite in -40 degree weather. It's super dangerous
January 30th, 2019 at 7:48 AM ^
so snowflakes can’t deal with actual snowflakes?
fwiw, I used to WALK to Zingerman’s on Sunday during the winter from west quad. The cold and snow wouldn’t stop me from getting a Sammie
