Violence in football is unnecessary and counterproductive

Watching the pro bowl was fun and revealing. It was basically a game of tag football and every bit as entertaining as the regular violent version of the game.

Many say that w/o the violence that people wouldn't watch. If violence sells so well, then why is boxing nowhere close to being the number one watched sport? I think people watch football for the athleticism, visual beauty, and unpredictability. Taking away powerful hits seems to not change the game at all.

The fake "violence sells" belief is killing the sport. People are backing out due to concussion fears, little league teams are collapsing, high school participation is plummeting, TV rating and fan attendance is crashing.

A less violent version of the sport is easy to install. Just let the linemen play as usual and reduce the play of the skill players to tag (per an official's whistle). The worst hits are the ones that happen to the skill players anyway.

Those that do not evolve, die off.

There are plenty of other sports other than football if you don't like hitting and tackling.  Watch or play those sports.  I am all for reducing injuries, in particular, head injuries, but football will always be a physical game.

Was flipping through the channels, came across the pro bowl and watched for about 5 minutes. Lol'd at the two hand touch they were playing. Like it or not, a certain amount of physicality is a part of football. Adjust rules to make the game safer, but flag football will never be a good solution.

This is such a poorly thought out wannabe-edgy take that lacks any nuance. The boxing argument is probably the dumbest part. Conflating violence with all contact instead of very specific types of contact is a close second. Maybe the sarcasm just went over my head.

There are so many good series to binge, so many good movies to watch on a cold, wintry day....

.....but no, you watched the Pro Bowl, arguably the worst among the "all-star" exhibitions in the major sports.

Some think the game is just as entertaining others find it a boring version of touch football.  I imagine the latter heavily outweigh the former.

Also, evolve or die isn't exactly a great argument.

I stopped reading after the first paragraph. That is an absurd opinion. The reason no one watches the pro bowl is because it is not real football.

The pro bowl is nowhere near remotely watchable. Nobody watches it. They had to start introducing gimmicks to the bowl to beg fans to even turn it on.

The largest group of NFL players affected was the linemen. They make up the largest group of players, but there is another reason for their prevalence. Each time an offensive lineman hits a defensive lineman at the inception of a football play, it creates a low-level subconcussive event. An offensive lineman who plays HS, college and pro football could leave the game with 10,000 subconcussive hits. None of these may be diagnosed, as concussions and the athlete may be unaware of the severity of the hits. The aggregation of thousands of low level hits to the head may be worse in their impact on the brain than getting knocked unconscious three times.

So let’s leave the lineman to do their thing, even though they’re the most affected by the physicality of the sport. So basically you put no thought or research into this at all. Also, I watched the entire pro bowl. It was not great.

The pro bowl is not good anything.   It’s not good football, it’s not good entertainment, I read the OP and kept thinking there was going to be a line at the end which signifies that it was sarcasm...I still hope the OP was being sarcastic.

Honestly the draw of sport and football, boxing, UFC isn’t the violence...it’s the spectacle of watching people lay it all on the line and sell out and being able be fly on the wall to see what the result is.  The players don’t try in the pro bowl and that’s why most do not watch.  It’s the same with some of these kids sitting out bowl games and catching heat, people like to see sacficen and struggle not bottom line mentality...Stop overthinking shit.

Football is a violent game.  Always has been.  Always will be.  Rules have been modified to reduce injuries, such as the kickoff being moved, kickoff fair catch, targeting, etc.  But football in its essence is a tackle the guy to the ground game.  And people like it.  People like to play it.  The fundamental essence of the game will not and should not change.
