2020 recruiting

Submitted by TK on January 11th, 2019 at 2:55 PM

I LOVE the two latest hires on the staff, partly because both guys are young and known as ace recruiters. I’m not about to go all Maizen and completely fret about recruiting just yet, but it appears we have some definite work to do in this class. 5 commits currently with a .8792 player rating, while OSU has 6 with a whopping .9575 rating. That’s...not great.

Are we favored for any top 100 guys at the moment? We thought we had one 5 star in Hinton but that didn’t happen. Not hitting the panic button but I hope this staff can follow up a very good class with another very good class, at the very least.

I get the excitement or panic but we just signed our 2019 class. The 2020 class has yet to commit then decommit then recommit only to decommit again just so they can rerecommit. Trust the process.

Way too early to worry about this.  And guys like JD Johnson will be raising that composite next season.

With the two hires we just announced, I'd expect 2020 recruiting to at least keep pace with 2019.

According to Seldon, Michigan has work to do for Paige who may be looking at other schools. Michigan does look good for Williams and Mullings though Mullings may be a competition with ND. Williams seems to be a strong lean towards Michigan.

QB: Got JD Johnson who will probably rise in rankings and trying to get Jay Butterfield or Parker McQuarrie as the other one in the class

RB: Michael Drennen, Jutahn McClain, Tirek Murphy, Lawrence Toafili, Sam Adams are the top names. Bijan Robinson is the long shot.

WR: Julian Fleming and Johnny Wilson are long shots. Kalil Branham committed. Otherwise theres interest in Williams, Josh Downs, Michael Redding, Mike Wyman, Elijah Badger, Traeshon Holden, Jaden Dottin, Devell Washington, Ian Stewart

TE: Patterson committed. Shooting for one of Ungar, Mark Redman, Theo Johnson, or Maliq Carr. Maybe flip Mayer from ND

OT: Try to flip Myles from Stanford. Otherwise associated with Zak Zinter, Kevin Pyne (probs to ND), Anton Harrison (probs to PSU), Andrew Gentry, Miller Merriwheather Lewis, Michael Carmody, Tosh Baker, and Seth McLaughlin

OG: Justing Rogers (looking to play down south and immediately as freshman), Andrew Raym, Geirean Hatchett

WDE: Bryce Mostella

SDE: Longshot for Bryan Bresee and Darrion Henry, likely for Braiden McGregor

DT: Cole Brevard, Jeffrey M'Ba

ILB: Cornell Wheeler committed. Ethan West leaning towards Michigan

OLB: Kalel Mullings, Osman Savage, Jaheim Thomas, Deamonte Trayanum (he wants to play RB though)

CB: Seldon committed. Myles Slusher, Joshua Moten. Longshot is Dwight McGlothern right now

S: Lathan Ransom, Makari Paige, Jordan Morant

ATH: Mookie Cooper, Cameron Martinez, Daniyel Ngata for RB/WR. Enzo Jennings for S/CB/WR.

I'll add, just checking around the recruiting profiles of our two newest hires, that we improved position with many of these recruits:

Campanile recruited: Tirek Murphy, Lucas Ungar, and Jordan Morant, plus Joshua Moten was being recruited for his backfield. Also Mullings and West were recruited on his side of the ball.

As a bonus, Gattis also was recruiting Jordan Morant, which seems to have had an immediate impact. Plus he was recruiting Johnny Wilson's high school teammate who is a WR also: Jermaine Burton. Most importantly, Gattis' NC connections might get us a chance at guys like: SDE's Jacolbe Cowan and Myles Murphy, which would help a bunch since we have no DLine coach yet.

Must lock in WDE Bryce Mostella and get in on DT Bryce Austin from Southfield.

Jesus fucking Christ. We are a year until signing day. How many freaking guys did we have in this class that started out as mid 3* types, our fans bitched and moaned, and they absolutely EXPLODED once the camp circuit completed?

Harbaugh is known for this. Jumping on under the radar guys that have great camp seasons and senior years and make huge jumps up the rankings.

Can we just NOT freak the fuck out over recruiting rankings of 5 prospects a full 5 months before summer camps even START?

Take a look at our class. JD Johnson is holding back our average a bit. If you exclude him, our average jumps up to .8885. Now go take a look at the Future Blue feature on JD. He’s an under-exposed QB who is expected to make major gains in the rankings.

Take a step back from the ledge. Drink a beer. And go to bed. Let the staff do their job. We’ll be fine.

2020 is a long way off.  Might be a little early to ratchet up the concern.  I prefer to bask in the glow of our 2019 signees, at least until, say, mid-summer or early fall.

5 star Hinton that we led for did not happen and we do not lead for a single top 100 in 247's rankings.

We will end up landing 1 final 5-star and 2 or more other top 100's.

Thanks.

I am confident that once the whole staff gets situated the recruiting will take care of itself. I think the spring game is going to be very important this year to a lot of the recruits. They are going to want to see how open the offense is. I do think Harbaugh will show a bit of that this year. Depends on how comfortable he is going to be with the guys adapting to it. There is a lot left to see and I have a feeling due to the amount of coaches movement this year the early signing period will not be as big this coming December. Next February is a long way away. When this team performs like I think they will, we won’t be talking about this anymore.  Well some of us won't be,,,Go Blue!!!!

Here's a quick summary of some 247 interest

RB:

Jalen Berger 57overall/9 position. From Don Bosco-already interested, now Campanile is here

Tirek Murphy 258/21. Only 1 CB, but it’s for Mich

WR: Julian Fleming 5/1. 1st offer, already likes M and Gattis was his lead recruiter at PSU & Bama

Rashawn Williams 156/29. Detroit King, M leads on CBs

Jaden Dottin 274/56. Suffield Academy & Don Brown is lead recruiter

Maliq Carr 390/76; Devell Washington 476/92; Ian Stewart 477/93 locals with interest

TE: Lukas Ungar 301/5. NJ guy so Partridge/Campanile combo may help

OT: Myles Hinton 12/2. Still a chance w/ a good yr and another Stanford down season?

Michael Carmody 196/25. Warm interest, in PA so Gattis may help

OG: Justin Rogers 14/1. Interest growing with Warriner, but who knows

DE: Bryce Mostella 343/14. Local, 100% of CBs, but Mattison was his lead

Braiden McGregor 279/14. Local, CBs split with ND, but Mattison was his lead

DT: Cole Brevard 157/13. Listed as cool, but visited in Nov

Denver Warren 320/28. Did we burn this bridge or can we use Solomon's transfer as a reason   to say we now have room?

LB: Ethan West 263/8. 100% CBs, but Washington was lead

Kalel Mullings 102/3. Lead CBs, MA is Don Brown territory

CB: Kelee Ringo 10/2. No interest, but a cool name

I'm not really concerned about recruiting. Plenty of teams do more with less than us. Ohio State should and almost certainly will out-recruit us. Beat them on field and recruiting might eventually follow.

I think it's a combination of being early, not lot of obvious holes for early playing time, and a bit of a face dive to finish the year. At some point in the very near future we need to sell more than hope of winning B1G titles and beating OSU to land some top and/or out of region players that have other options that don't have UM ties.

It'll be interesting to see who Campanile, Gattis and Partridge can bring in for 2020.  Add Jay Harbaugh to that list of strong recruiters.  I'll put my money on them helping to secure Michigan a top 10 class.
