Alabama Co-OC Josh Gattis will become the new offensive coordinator at Michigan
BREAKING: #Alabama Co-OC Josh Gattis will become the new offensive coordinator at #Michigan, sources tell me & @ChrisVannini. This is a big addition for Jim Harbaugh and the Wolverines: https://t.co/Nxcf5X2EVn

Maybe this is why Harbaugh responded to BeatOSU52's friend's email
January 10th, 2019 at 4:37 PM ^
Too bad its not Joe Gatto, he's be telling Harbaugh all sorts of hilarious plays to run
January 10th, 2019 at 4:37 PM ^
It's Jimmys and Joes not Xs and Os at Bama but I hope this guy is good. Anyone but Pep. At least Harbaugh is open to change.
January 10th, 2019 at 4:38 PM ^
Did anyone else see that Najee Harris is possibly transferring out of Bama as well? Possibility of him following here???
January 10th, 2019 at 4:44 PM ^
Do I need to stop at Kroger and buy some lemons?
January 10th, 2019 at 4:48 PM ^
Would he come even with Charbonnet in-coming?
January 10th, 2019 at 4:39 PM ^
Dan Murphy is saying Gattis will be Co-offensive coordinator. Hope this doesnt mean Pep stays.
Go Blue
January 10th, 2019 at 4:42 PM ^
Have not seen this. Plus with Feldman reporting Gattis will call plays I can’t foresee Pep remaining on staff.
January 10th, 2019 at 5:19 PM ^
Well its been a committee of coaches calling the plays since Harbaugh came here so its possible that he would suggest plays but not all of his suggestions would make it on the field. This is my interpretation of how play calling is handled at Michigan.
January 10th, 2019 at 5:19 PM ^
I place zero faith in Feldman actually knowing what Gattis' role will be in play calling.
From a common sense standpoint, I would find it extremely odd to turn the reigns over to a brand new OC who has never called plays before, and who has been passed over for promotion to OC at two different schools in the last two years.
I could see grooming him to call plays. I could see loudly announcing he'll call plays, and then really just taking his input the same way Harbaugh has taken input from other offensive staff members over the years. I'm having a bit of a vision problem making out the image of Gattis being allowed to call whatever play he wants the majority of the time, or even a sizeable minority of the time.
January 10th, 2019 at 4:40 PM ^
Great recruiter and hopefully (fingers crossed), an innovative young play-caller. Deservedly, Harbaugh has dealt with criticism over the past two years but if he really is relinquishing play-calling duties, then kudos to him for being willing to adapt and step back for the sake of the program.
January 10th, 2019 at 4:42 PM ^
Can we round up to $2 million on his contract and get us a Jalen Hurts at the same time?
January 10th, 2019 at 8:07 PM ^
Why the fuck would we want hurts?
January 10th, 2019 at 4:44 PM ^
BPONE reminds me of the last Alabama offensive coordinator we hired, but Gattis seems like the real deal.
January 10th, 2019 at 5:03 PM ^
Definitely had the same thought. I think this is a good hire, but Nuss left a bad taste in my mouth. If Bama wanted him bad enough they would have kept, right?
January 10th, 2019 at 4:47 PM ^
Gattis is a commodity with WR’s and says play calling. I think this means McDaniels is out. Won’t be part of the staff. Never heard a formal hire on him. Says either Pep stays or a someone new. I see O coaches like this...
Jim harbaugh
Jay Harbaugh- RB’s
Warinner - OL
Moore - TE’s
Gattis - WR/Play calling on game day
Hamilton - QB’s/Coordinator/Asst Coach (involved with Harbaugh/Gattis on plays)
So I think Pep stays and McDaniels is out, especially since we haven’t heard McDaniels hired and Gattis is WR guy.
January 10th, 2019 at 4:57 PM ^
McDaniels hiring was announced already.
January 10th, 2019 at 5:04 PM ^
Ok. I must have missed that note.
January 10th, 2019 at 4:52 PM ^
According to Dan Murphy by way of The Athletic, he will be a co-offensive coordinator here as well. That would interesting to leave Bama to come to UM for same role especially when you probably would have been sole coordinator at Maryland.
January 10th, 2019 at 5:13 PM ^
Maybe with Warinner? Maybe that’s how we are keeping him and locking him up? Last year it was Pep/Ed/Jim in decisions. Sounds like it could be Josh/Ed/Jim this time, with Josh calling the plays. Again speculation, but sounds like that could be it. Especially if McDaniels is here and looks like Pep has no spot.

I’m looking but not seeing this?
January 10th, 2019 at 9:54 PM ^
Yeah I haven’t seen this either. Only thing I’ve read so far is that he’s the OC.
January 10th, 2019 at 4:57 PM ^
... I'm so used to bad news that I don't quite know how to respond lol
January 10th, 2019 at 4:58 PM ^
Great hire, I couldn't be happier.
January 10th, 2019 at 4:59 PM ^
Promising. Now let’s drop ND from the schedule.
January 10th, 2019 at 5:03 PM ^
Great track record as a WR coach... unknown as an OC...
a risky hire, but has a great lineage and i think this is preferable than a re-tread...
i sure hope he's going to be given full control of the offense though...presumably that's what he's been promised, but until you see it in action, its hard to say if that is borne out
January 10th, 2019 at 5:06 PM ^
Wasn't Doug Nussmeier a Bama OC? (Ducks)
January 10th, 2019 at 8:59 PM ^
He was, but the suspicious part was the lateral move to a worse program.
January 10th, 2019 at 5:19 PM ^
Came here to point this out. The email must have pushed Jim in the right direction.
January 10th, 2019 at 5:21 PM ^
Officially announced, with some quotes from Jim Harbaugh and Josh Gattis below:
January 10th, 2019 at 5:47 PM ^
Nice!
Now if we could only get "recognition" from our staff that the passing game needs improvement! /s
Amirite Mangos?
January 10th, 2019 at 5:26 PM ^
Jeez, I hope this doesn’t piss off Pep. What if he leaves to go to OSU or MSU? Oh, the agony. :-)
January 10th, 2019 at 5:32 PM ^
Hmm, but was this "Alabama" team any good? Never heard of 'em.
January 10th, 2019 at 5:49 PM ^
Can we get separate threads for Nussmeir and "the email made him do it" jokes?
lol
January 10th, 2019 at 5:59 PM ^
No offense or anything
January 10th, 2019 at 6:02 PM ^
To be honest, I did not know who Coach Josh Gattis was this morning. That said, everything I have read about this hire sounds great. He's a highly regarded recruiter, up and coming Coach from Bama. I trust Coach Harbaugh, and just the fact PSU thought losing him to Bama was a huge loss for them. I also think this is a great move for Coach Gattis for many reasons. Revolutionize the offense, we have some great receivers and QB's. And for those including myself who did not like seeing Coaches take promotions to go to OSU, we now a lateral transfer move in by an up and coming Coach from Alabama. I got a good feeling about this after reading up on it this afternoon. We are going to benefit from his recruiting ability. Go Blue !!
January 10th, 2019 at 6:45 PM ^
Something needed to change. Time will tell whether or not this is the change that was needed. Either way, it could be worse. We could've ended the season as the second-worst B1G offense (Rutgers was the worst), kept everyone on staff, and just shuffled their titles. Lol
January 10th, 2019 at 6:57 PM ^
OP must be confused. We prefer BPONE on this site!
January 10th, 2019 at 7:00 PM ^
Nussmeier 2.0
January 10th, 2019 at 7:00 PM ^
One or 2 good years and he’s gone, these young offensive coordinators are hot right now for getting head coaching jobs. And if he kills it, he’ll be gone after next year.
Has there ever been a time like this? Where you literally have to start thinking of someone’s replacement if they see any success? It just seems right now our staff has seen so much turnover, not from taking lateral jobs either, guys are getting higher paid positions
January 10th, 2019 at 7:15 PM ^
It’s supply and demand. College’s with winning football programs create a lot of revenue for the university. It’s BIG.....
January 10th, 2019 at 7:13 PM ^
What will Pep do? Take drink orders?
January 10th, 2019 at 8:04 PM ^
Waterboy!

January 10th, 2019 at 7:55 PM ^
No doubt this is a big upgrade. Co offensive coordinator of the 6th best offense in NCAA has to have much for the 49th ranked Wolverines. His receiver coaching experience will be an asset. I expect to see a utilization of an upgraded philosophy. Why bring a coordinator from Sabans crew if you aren't looking to change or at least incorporate a more pro passing scheme?
January 10th, 2019 at 8:26 PM ^
Great hire. I wonder if Jim has told him yet that DPJ, Tarik Black and Nico Collins can’t be on the field at the same time. Hopefully Harbaugh will be letting go of his play sheet this fall.
January 10th, 2019 at 8:35 PM ^
Not only can all 3 not be on the field at the same time, but whoever is on the field has to come out after 3-4 plays because tight ends.
