Greg Mattison Rumblings

Submitted by DaveHuck on January 7th, 2019 at 1:04 PM

Isiaah Hole just tweeted out an “woo boy”, followed by a “Say it ain’t so Matty” from Chris Wormley. Rumblings starting that Greg Mattison May be announcing retirement. Nothing confirmed, but there are several tweets with Mattison’s name linked.  Bummer, if true.

Sounds like his contract expired and they chose not to renew it. Not sure if going to OSU is out of bitterness or he just wanted to keep working and it was an opportunity relativeley close to family.

Edit:  Webb now saying contract rumor is false, so nevermind

I love Greg Mattison and it will be a tough loss, but I honestly expected OSU to get someone better than him as their DC.  Solely bevause it's OSU and they get whatever they want whenever they want.

The knee-jerk reaction is that the sky is falling, but if Mattison has been hired as their DC, are we sure that move isn't too clever by half?  OSU can have almost any DC in the country.  You want Mattison?

C'mon, the guy was our DC back in '96 and just straight up made a lateral move to Notre Dame.

He's a good coach, but he has always looked out for himself.   And if Harbaugh really didn't renew his contract, well then he can go wherever he wants to.

Edit:  Ok Sam Webb reporting that the story about Harbaugh not renewing his contract "totally false".  So it's just Mattison bailing for a better job.  IMO still not very surprising after '96.

Not concerned in the least.

Yes, GM was a great DL coach and recruiter, but in the only game that matters, his squad got ZERO pressure, so I think we need someone else.  Besides, did he ever coach his DLinemen to get their hands up and bat passes down?

Maybe, rather than the sky falling, this is a sign that Harbaugh is making moves.  Brown out, Mattison told he’s not a candidate for DC, so he goes elsewhere. Or, maybe Harbaugh asked him where the weak link was in the defense and Brown said DL.

If he's going to OSU for a LB coach / co-DC role, this might work out for the Buckeyes.

If he's going to OSU as the main DC, this is not a good move for them.

Also a bit of an odd choice, in that Day made a big deal of how much he was going to focus his assistants on recruiting, and then hires a guy who's going to be 70.

Strange days indeed.

I actually think this is hilarious.  OSU is going to replace Shiano with a 70 year old.  Losing Mattison sucks, but OSU giving the keys to the defense to a guy who was about to retire is comical.

Michigan essentially let him go by not offering a new contract, it sucks but it was not like he was poached.

EDIT - Sam Webb said that Michigan not renewing his contract was false.

Wow, this is awful news!

At this point, maybe Don Brown will leave and that will help us, because without a new defensive scheme, Mattison is going to feed OSU every single concept and defensive call we have.

I hope he’s not being Washington with him. That would be terrible.

Was wondering what the OSU fans thought of this... they are NOT happy. Many of them expressing the urge to "puke" and one even hoping, at Mattison's age, he might not make it to September.

Oh well, might as well laugh at a time like this.

This is so disgusting. Why are there so many examples of people ditching Michigan for OSU but never the inverse? Boren, Chris Rock (NTCR), Dakich, and now Mattison. Makes me want to vomit
