Greg Mattison Rumblings
Isiaah Hole just tweeted out an “woo boy”, followed by a “Say it ain’t so Matty” from Chris Wormley. Rumblings starting that Greg Mattison May be announcing retirement. Nothing confirmed, but there are several tweets with Mattison’s name linked. Bummer, if true.

Welp.
January 7th, 2019 at 1:37 PM ^
If Don Brown had a say in it does that mean Brown is coming back?
January 7th, 2019 at 1:40 PM ^
Sam Webb just said this is not true.
January 7th, 2019 at 1:42 PM ^
So they are not afraid to F a Michigan institution like Mattison, but they have to treat Pep with gentle kid gloves?
One or the other, please.
January 7th, 2019 at 1:27 PM ^
Sounds like his contract expired and they chose not to renew it. Not sure if going to OSU is out of bitterness or he just wanted to keep working and it was an opportunity relativeley close to family.
Edit: Webb now saying contract rumor is false, so nevermind

RIP the Schiano Man and with it the greatest musical tribute ever https://twitter.com/pftcommenter/status/936032747885391872?s=21

BTW, Brady Hoke returning as DL coach is totally possible now.
January 7th, 2019 at 1:31 PM ^
stfu..... lol
January 7th, 2019 at 1:36 PM ^
Brady Hoke is a good Dline coach and a helluva recruiter. Probably would be the 2nd best recruiter on staff.
January 7th, 2019 at 3:11 PM ^
Has brady been fired enough times to come back to the school who fired him as HC to take a DL coaching position?
January 7th, 2019 at 1:28 PM ^
So...ummm...Greg Schiano's available.
January 7th, 2019 at 1:35 PM ^
What would he coach Magnus, and is he a good recruiter?
January 7th, 2019 at 1:28 PM ^
I love Greg Mattison and it will be a tough loss, but I honestly expected OSU to get someone better than him as their DC. Solely bevause it's OSU and they get whatever they want whenever they want.
January 7th, 2019 at 1:28 PM ^
The knee-jerk reaction is that the sky is falling, but if Mattison has been hired as their DC, are we sure that move isn't too clever by half? OSU can have almost any DC in the country. You want Mattison?
January 7th, 2019 at 1:28 PM ^
What the heck is going on with our coaching staff? Retiring is one thing...but to even consider going to OSU?
Are you kidding me?
January 7th, 2019 at 1:38 PM ^
C'mon, the guy was our DC back in '96 and just straight up made a lateral move to Notre Dame.
He's a good coach, but he has always looked out for himself. And if Harbaugh really didn't renew his contract, well then he can go wherever he wants to.
Edit: Ok Sam Webb reporting that the story about Harbaugh not renewing his contract "totally false". So it's just Mattison bailing for a better job. IMO still not very surprising after '96.
January 7th, 2019 at 1:29 PM ^
This is some dumb shit.
January 7th, 2019 at 1:29 PM ^
I thought that fossil was considering retiring
January 7th, 2019 at 1:30 PM ^
Not concerned in the least.
Yes, GM was a great DL coach and recruiter, but in the only game that matters, his squad got ZERO pressure, so I think we need someone else. Besides, did he ever coach his DLinemen to get their hands up and bat passes down?
Maybe, rather than the sky falling, this is a sign that Harbaugh is making moves. Brown out, Mattison told he’s not a candidate for DC, so he goes elsewhere. Or, maybe Harbaugh asked him where the weak link was in the defense and Brown said DL.
January 7th, 2019 at 1:30 PM ^
If he's going to OSU for a LB coach / co-DC role, this might work out for the Buckeyes.
If he's going to OSU as the main DC, this is not a good move for them.
Also a bit of an odd choice, in that Day made a big deal of how much he was going to focus his assistants on recruiting, and then hires a guy who's going to be 70.
Strange days indeed.
January 7th, 2019 at 1:33 PM ^
Mattison was one of our best recruiters on the trail so that makes sense. Now how long will he still coach is more of the question.
January 7th, 2019 at 1:41 PM ^
We may get negged, but honestly, I agree. I hate to see him go, but I'm not in fear of him being a DC.
January 7th, 2019 at 1:31 PM ^
I actually think this is hilarious. OSU is going to replace Shiano with a 70 year old. Losing Mattison sucks, but OSU giving the keys to the defense to a guy who was about to retire is comical.
January 7th, 2019 at 1:31 PM ^
Michigan essentially let him go by not offering a new contract, it sucks but it was not like he was poached.
EDIT - Sam Webb said that Michigan not renewing his contract was false.
January 7th, 2019 at 1:35 PM ^
Kind of hard to believe that he isn't good enough to coach Michigan's defensive line, but OSU would hire him as a coordinator.
January 7th, 2019 at 1:31 PM ^
Maybe it's Pep Hamilton to be a Co-Offensive Coordinator with OSU. Either that, or Jay Habaugh is heading down there.
January 7th, 2019 at 1:31 PM ^
Looks like the defensive staff is getting younger...don’t know if that’s a good thing or a bad thing yet though?
January 7th, 2019 at 1:34 PM ^
Maybe the younger DL coach will teach the innovative, modern concept of getting their hands up when they cannot get home and bat passes down.
January 7th, 2019 at 1:32 PM ^
Wow, this is awful news!
At this point, maybe Don Brown will leave and that will help us, because without a new defensive scheme, Mattison is going to feed OSU every single concept and defensive call we have.
I hope he’s not being Washington with him. That would be terrible.
January 7th, 2019 at 1:46 PM ^
Honestly, do they really need the UM calls?
January 7th, 2019 at 1:33 PM ^
Regardless of how this pans out, the optics on this isn't great. From the outside looking in, this is a staff in crisis.
January 7th, 2019 at 1:35 PM ^
And we have Pep still on the staff where Jim is reportedly too big of a wussy to shitcan him.
January 7th, 2019 at 1:34 PM ^
Quick!! Someone consult Yoder to see if this is all real.
January 7th, 2019 at 1:34 PM ^
Why did UMBig11 say this morning "I have nothing new on Pep, and Matty would retire before he ever went to OSU."
January 7th, 2019 at 1:39 PM ^
That's another one for the UMBig11 haters to stick in their pocket.
January 7th, 2019 at 1:41 PM ^
Obviously means he has something new on Pep and Matty wouldn't retire before going to OSU, duh.
January 7th, 2019 at 1:34 PM ^
My guess is that he was not going to be replacement for Brown. Kind of tells you what Harbaugh thought of him as potential DC.
January 7th, 2019 at 1:40 PM ^
Harbaugh is an offensive coach and seems to think highly of Pep as an OC. Not sure he’s the be-all end-all on defensive coordinator evaluation.
January 7th, 2019 at 1:35 PM ^
Maybe he's taking a role as double agent.
January 7th, 2019 at 1:35 PM ^
Was wondering what the OSU fans thought of this... they are NOT happy. Many of them expressing the urge to "puke" and one even hoping, at Mattison's age, he might not make it to September.
Oh well, might as well laugh at a time like this.
January 7th, 2019 at 1:41 PM ^
What? OSU fans are being vile? Color me shocked!
January 7th, 2019 at 1:35 PM ^
Can someone take Pep too?
Also, the way to beat Mattison is simple: four and five receiver sets out of the gun. Worked against him when we torched Florida.
January 7th, 2019 at 1:36 PM ^
So what you're saying is that we're completely fucked
January 7th, 2019 at 1:40 PM ^
Yes, we will do the exact opposite.
January 7th, 2019 at 1:35 PM ^
wtf is going on.
January 7th, 2019 at 1:35 PM ^
This is so disgusting. Why are there so many examples of people ditching Michigan for OSU but never the inverse? Boren, Chris Rock (NTCR), Dakich, and now Mattison. Makes me want to vomit
January 7th, 2019 at 1:40 PM ^
Maybe because of whining bitches like you that infest the Michigan fan base. Make sure you salve those hands before wringing them so hard.
January 7th, 2019 at 1:40 PM ^
seriously? dakich?
January 7th, 2019 at 1:45 PM ^
Yes, how dare he take a full-ride scholarship opportunity and be allowed to play basketball at a major program instead of being our bench-warming comedian who occasionally gets to get on the court.
