OT?: Liberty University Hires Hugh Freeze as Head Football Coach

Hugh Freeze has been hired by Liberty University to be their head football coach. He replaces Turner Gill, who retired.

Here's a fun twist: Liberty University's Athletic Director is none other than Ian McCaw, former Baylor University Athletic Director who resigned amid the sexual abuse scandal.

How these universities can get away with employing these people while touting their universities as "religious" is beyond me.  Morality is dead.

This doesn't surprise me at all - It's all about what you say not how you practice and American Christianity has degenerated to worship of power, money and politics.

As someone that was confirmed in the Presbyterian Church and consider once going to Seminary I am shocked how fast this has happened.

This is appalling.  A school that holds itself up as a Christian institution is hiring a man who knew of and covered up countless sexual assaults at a prior institution that also claims to be Christian.  Apparently winning and the almighty dollar are worth destroying the lives of a few women on campus.

This is astounding to me. I cannot believe how LU can possibly justify this, given the reputation they claim as an institution.

I have family who have graduated from LU, and will be very interested in their reactions to this hire. I believe in forgiveness and redemption for people, but that doesn't mean going back to a position of influence/responsibility.

Their online programs are lucrative (because they're super-sleazy federal loan processing units, much like the for-profit certificate mills). I think it's more the other way around: shiny campus and big-time college sports to make it look like a real university, so they can continue the hard sell of their online pap.

"How these universities can get away with employing these people while touting their universities as "religious" is beyond me.  Morality is dead."

You are mistakenly assuming organized religion has anything to do with morality.

"You are mistakenly assuming organized religion has anything to do with morality."

Right, because "thou shalt not steal," "thou shalt not kill," "honor thy father and thy mother," "thou shalt not commit adultery," "thou shalt not bear witness against thy neighbor," and "thou shalt not covet," all statements of organized Christian religion, have NOTHING whatsoever to do with morality.

The misuse of a good thing does not make the good thing bad.

This is bad and everyone associated should feel bad.

My siblings went to Liberty and have extended family that attended/are employed by the university. It's too bad because people are going to assume they approve of this hire, sort of guilt by association.

I feel gross. Shame on LU.

My head is spinning.  Ian McCaw, who looked the other way as Baylor athletes serially assaulted women, is the AD.  Hugh Freese, who frequented prostitutes-and attacked recruiting with a $$$ creativity $$$ unknown  since SMU in the pre-death penalty days-is the coach. $$$ What's next?

Rick Pitino, new Liberty hoops coach?  At least he shared the prostitutes with his players.  Do unto others, and all of that.  Craig James as special advisor to Coach Freese?  Can Freese call the prostitutes faster than James can kill them?  *Allegedly*

Liberty barely qualifies as a university in my opinion.  I interviewed a guy with a grad degree from there last year.  He was an obnoxious prick in addition to being a moron.

as a current Liberty student, I do not think this is a very good look.  Forgiveness is one thing, enabling is another

There are times like this when I appreciate my conversion to Secular Humanism.  Speaking of which, while some of you may be gathering around a pole to air your grievances and demonstrate your feats of strength on Festivus, keep in mind that you also can celebrate HumanLight on December 23.

Another skirmish in the ongoing cultural wars that will accomplish nothing.

Everybody thinks they have the exclusive moral high ground.

Almost nobody does.

A pox on all your houses.
