Playoff Chance?

If OSU, Oklahoma, and Georgia lose is there a chance for Michigan to sneak in at number 4?

Don't forget about UCF.  If they win without Milton on Saturday, that will say a lot about them.

Look at this Sporting News link.  In none of their chaos scenarios is Michigan in the conversation.  This is the one they didn't speculate: UGA, Oklahoma, OSU and UCF losing.
You need a situation where there the B1G, Pac-12, and Big 12 have a conference champ with 3+ losses.  The above scenario gives you that.

We arent 1 of the 4 best teams in the country, i dont care how you spin it we just arent. We just got boat-raced in one of the biggest games of JH's tenure. Lets get a good bowl and end the season strong by sending the seniors out with a W

1) No, Michigan will not be going to the playoff this year.

2) Those saying "we don't want to go to the playoff" are completely insane. We always always always want to go. Could be The Monstars on the other sideline and we still want to go. You always take a seat at the table if you can.

MSU's appearance and beatdown by Alabama is more impressive than any of the few bowl wins Michigan has in the BCS and Playoff eras. It hurts, but it's true.

You're the insane one. Would you rather Michigan close out the season with two blow out losses in a row, or potentially a nice bowl win over a big name (but not elite) team?

Harbaugh's Michigan teams can't punch above their weight and Clemson/Alabama are far above. It would look like the OSU game on defense, but the offense would look just as shitty too.

The chance to win a championship as the 4 seed against Alabama is greater than 0%. The chance to win a championship as a team in the Peach Bowl or wherever else is exactly 0%. Given we are near the playoff conversation, we want to have the chance, however small.

From a recruiting standpoint, I think it's much better to end the season on a win than it is to get an MSU-style appearance in the CFP.

I'm usually an "upside gain, not downside risk" kind of guy, but Harbaugh did such a shitty job against OSU this year that I think this team needs a breather and a moment to reset.

I want to play Alabama too, but not before we have a good and innovative passing game coordinator/play caller. Look at what Warinner did - he took Runyan from awful to all B1G in one season. That's elite coaching. We need that out of Pep's replacement.

No. If it came down to a 2 loss Michigan vs a 2 loss OSU...they would probably take the team that won head to head 62-39. Also even if Georgia lost...in that scenario I could still see the committee taking Georgia over MI to hype the Bama Georgia rematch.

I was thinking this too...

I was afraid to say it out loud.

I thought that if everyone keeps their mouth shut, then maybe we could have a pleasant, unexpected, happy surprise after so many years of wandering the desert, lonely, hungry, thirsty, and humiliated.

If they are all blown out ... maybe? But we don't deserve the playoff after such an embarrassing outing in Columbus. In 2014, OSU lost to VT by 14. In 2016, Washington lost to USC by 13. In 2017 Georgia did lose to Auburn by 23, but won the SEC. Alabama did lose to Auburn by 12 in 2017 also.

Point is, outside of Georgia, there's no precedent for a team that has been blown out during the season to get in - and Georgia still won the SEC last year. Also, no 2-loss team.

Theoretically it could happen, but IMO UCF deserves to be in before we do since we shit the bed in Columbus.

Ed: Though I did forget UCF's QB is down, so perhaps not.

No. had the game been close then possibly but since it was a total beat down then zero chance. As a Michigan fan, I personally do not want any match up against a Nick Saban or Kirby Smart coached team. We are not even close to that at this point.

How about we just be happy to maybe get a shot at "defending" and undefeated national champ UCF.

The same UCF we played 9/10/2016 to the tune-up of 51-14.

Or the Rose Bowl, which I don't care what people say, is still something I will always go to.

because this topic hasn’t been discussed to death... Do you really want to get embarrassed by Alabama again? I don’t. Get a good bowl game, win that, and go 11-2. Good season overall.

Who cares?? It’s basketball season now.  Good season for football with typical gut wrenching predictable losses like every year.      Hoops is actually fun to watch and I’m not stressed at all watching

Okay, let's play using S&P win probabilities.

Georgia has 57% chance of losing, Ohio State 12%, Oklahoma 18%, and since Milton is hurt let's suppose UCF has an astonishing 80% chance of losing.  Since all of these would have to occur, that would be:

0.57 * 0.12 * 0.18 * 0.80 = 0.0098496 which is about 1 chance in 100.

Now, Georgia would have to get blown out b/c if they play 'Bama close and the rest happens, it's quite easy to conclude Georgia is the 4th best team ahead of everyone else.  What are the chances that happens? If Bama and Georgia played 10 times, how many times is it a Bama blow out?  Let's throw out 2 (which is crazy high).  The formula then becomes:

0.20 * 0.12 * 0.18 * 0.80 = 0.003456 which is about 1 chance in 300.

Then again, let's say that without Milton, UCF will almost certainly lose to Memphis (who they struggled with even when they had Milton, 31-30).  Recall November 12, 2016: #2 Michigan lost to unranked Iowa (/throws up in mouth), #3 Clemson lost at home to unranked. Pitt, and #4 Washington lost to unranked USC.

Had our loss to Ohio State been respectable, then we would surely be in good position given the scenario you provided for this coming weekend.

Unfortunately, our loss to Ohio State was not respectable.

Why wouldn’t fans want Michigan to make the playoff?  The goal is to win a national championship. Not two weeks ago, most everyone on this blog was expecting Michigan to beat OSU based on both teams season performances. Michigan isn’t as bad as it looked on Saturday. OSU isn’t as good as it looked on Saturday.  Michigan still has a very, very good team. I hope the scenario plays out and Michigan makes the playoff.

It is not beyond reason for OSU, Oklahoma and Georgia to all lose this weekend.

The team nobody talks about is Clemson.  I don't think they're an auto-win over Pitt.  In the scenario that OSU wins but Georgia (likely), Oklahoma (50/50) and Clemson (not likely but ??) all lose by more than one score then we could possibly see Michigan make it in along with OSU.  Weird.

I am rooting for this because Michigan obviously, but also to create huge controversy and force an increase in the CFP from 4 to 6 or 8.

Possible. I think more so than most on this board. Georgia loses by 2 scores? Can’t see them wanting a rematch. Oklahoma and OSU lose, and not on crazy fluke? Then I don’t see a team moving up for losing. I see it that all the contenders choked, and it will shake out like it did before rivalry/OSU week.
