Touché.

never cared that much for carr. he should have been a lifetime asst. coach somewhere. he didn't move the program foward, and like alot of coaches across the country made a name with one great season. other wise he had alot of average seasons and really let recruiting slip towards the end.
October 26th, 2018 at 3:24 PM ^
he didn't move the program foward
He won our only national title in the last 70 years. He also won 75% of his games over 13 seasons. To say he "should have been a lifetime assistant coach" when he's in the CFB Hall of Fame as a head coach is a reach.
If he didn't like RichRod, it was probably because Rich is a shitty human being (fired from AZ for sexual harassment). I don't see the point in piling on him. Is he supposed to monitor everything Marcus Ray says now?
October 27th, 2018 at 12:54 AM ^
Didn't Carr recommend RichRod to Martin? Then turned against him almost immediately.
October 27th, 2018 at 1:23 PM ^
I thought he wanted Ferentz or English?
October 26th, 2018 at 3:01 PM ^
Bitterness re: a lot of things. That's causing him to eat his feelings. His weight gain is causing him to hate himself. That's increasing his bitterness. Rinse. Repeat.
He's in a vicious cycle of self-hate.
October 26th, 2018 at 3:14 PM ^
Hmm. Fits right in with the Sparties then, doesn't he?
October 26th, 2018 at 3:24 PM ^
I guess I don't know who you are specifically referencing, but a lot of former players go through something like this, although I think Marcus is going through a very Michigan-specific version of it.
Player's career ends (either after college by not getting drafted or signed, or after some years in the league and not getting resigned). Player doesn't believe their playing days should be over - player feels bad. Player gains weight because they still eat like a 25 year old pro football player but they are a 30 year old lay person now. Player tries to make it coaching/broadcasting, but this is a highly competitive industry as well and it doesn't always work out. Now player is not a player and not getting traction in football-adjacent industry and overweight, so they really feel bad. They don't change eating habits, which adds to depression. Now they are bitter, overweight, depressed 45 year old with failing health.
Pretty dark, sorry. Marcus is basically just on that cycle but he's specifically bitter about 1. being a highly rated recruit, but having a shorter NFL career than his 1997 teammates (Woodson, Griese, etc.), 2. Not being able to get into broadcasting as well as some of his former teammates have (Woodson, Griese, Jansen, etc.), 3. Not being able to get a coaching job at Michigan.
October 26th, 2018 at 3:29 PM ^
I was just being facetious and referencing Sparties in general.

Count on the good Doctor to drop a diagnosis.
October 26th, 2018 at 4:23 PM ^
I’m getting that ad for the hairy bare chested hoodie right in the middle of your post. It’s just the perfect post to see that in.
October 26th, 2018 at 6:01 PM ^
That thing freaks me out.
October 26th, 2018 at 8:31 PM ^
100% Correct Dr!
October 26th, 2018 at 3:25 PM ^
Pretty much
October 26th, 2018 at 3:53 PM ^
Pretty much. Ever since the Rays Of Light book self-promotion he was doing (how ironic is that?), his attitude has been getting worse and worse - for whatever reason. In the last months of his time with Jamie on the WTKA afternoon show, he was getting intolerable to listen to. And now, it sounds like he's sunk into a whole new well of bitterness. It's probably a combination of things I'm guessing. The assistant coach gig that never happened is probably a core cause. But he should probably get some counseling or go to some motivational seminars to try and exorcise his anger and bitterness before it consumes him.
October 26th, 2018 at 4:07 PM ^
Should definitely get counseling. I genuinely think he's in a bad place mentally.
October 26th, 2018 at 9:12 PM ^
It's weird because he was so humble when he first came back to this market.
You can tell he was at rock bottom because when he finally started making money again, his shitty attitude that got him fired from all of his other jobs resurfaced. He is a textbook borderline personality disorder case.
I think his major malfunction now is he thinks he knows everything about the game. Therefore, he thinks he knows more about defense than Don Brown. He's one of those people who can't admit when he is wrong even when you have him dead to rights. He is the black Mike Valenti.
October 26th, 2018 at 3:01 PM ^
Honestly ... I sincerely doubt that he's behaving this way 100% authentically. My multi-year suspicion, watching him guest comment on BTN, is that his career was on the rocks because he was *way* too much of a homer during the Hoke years.
I think he's just over-correcting. And while that contributes to how little I value his speech, I neither like nor dislike him. I just don't care.
October 26th, 2018 at 3:05 PM ^
that is exactly what he is doing. he is over-correcting to the max to show he is not a wolverine slappy. but instead it just makes him look dumb and bitter.
October 26th, 2018 at 3:14 PM ^
Exactly. Which only makes him severely wrong again. Except now it's in the opposite way.
And since his credibility with non-Michigan fans was already toast, this philosophy change is fully self-defeating. Because he's never going to get that outsider audience back. They gone.
October 26th, 2018 at 3:44 PM ^
You know, I've seen your username countless times and I always glanced at it and thought it was "Caris My Homeboy" as some sort of Caris Levert homage. I only now saw the extra R and capital I. These new reading glasses are paying off big time!
October 26th, 2018 at 4:15 PM ^
He can be my homeboy, too. I just created the u/n almost a decade before knowing about him.
October 26th, 2018 at 4:27 PM ^
Holy crap, me too. I’ve always read it as Caris is my homeboy. My mind just added that extra is in there
October 26th, 2018 at 4:43 PM ^
OMG - me too. I thought it was Caris Levert for all of these years. I did just order a few pairs of readers today though.
October 26th, 2018 at 6:29 PM ^
Guilty as well
October 26th, 2018 at 9:15 PM ^
Glad I wasn't the only one!
October 26th, 2018 at 5:07 PM ^
I as well. This changes everything.
October 26th, 2018 at 10:00 PM ^
Thanks for pointing this out! I never once saw Carr in there until now...
October 26th, 2018 at 11:49 PM ^
Haha so did I. Apparently lots of other people did too. Awesome.
October 26th, 2018 at 3:31 PM ^
Yeah, this sounds right. To go a little deeper: I don't think he's a bright enough guy to come up with genuinely interesting, reasonable-ish takes along pre-set pro-Michigan/anti-Michigan lines, so he ends up having to play this sort of character.
October 26th, 2018 at 9:16 PM ^
Ray isn't overcorrecting. Overcorrecting is what that smarmy weasel on Michael Spath's show does. Ray thinks he knows more than Harbaugh's entire staff.
October 27th, 2018 at 12:23 AM ^
Yup. Quit listening to him a couple years ago during his 'Rays Of Light' segments with Sam and Ira. He always came off negative towards the program and very know-it-all-y. Then he started sounding like my MSU-alum brother; as in going out of his way to find and point out wrong stuff about Michigan. This bothered me, but at first I thought maybe, as someone who'd been around the game a lot more I was, he knew something I didn't. But when he started criticizing Don Brown and down-playing his success with the defense, I knew he was full of shit and maybe bitter or something. So I simply tuned him out.
October 26th, 2018 at 3:02 PM ^
He’s always been critical of Michigan because they haven’t been as good as Carr era teams (same as what Braylon does). But when Michigan has performed well he basically doubles down on his hawt takes and doesn’t give them credit. He also hates Michigan fans essentially and prides himself for coming out of Columbus. After last weekend he put Purdue above Michigan for the best team in the big ten which is a hawt take for sure.
October 26th, 2018 at 3:17 PM ^
Praises columbus constantly - and of course lives there.
October 26th, 2018 at 4:13 PM ^
When I saw that picture, my first thought was "he must have eaten it".
October 26th, 2018 at 4:11 PM ^
Has he always? I remember 2013, he predicted Michigan to go 11-1 with a loss to Iowa.
He always seemed slightly unstable, one way or the other.
October 26th, 2018 at 3:02 PM ^
He’s just out there pandering to whoever will give him some airtime. At least Braylon has had the good sense to SFTU after his ND comments (which I’m surprised he has). Marcus just keeps digging the hole deeper. He’s universally hated my Michigan fans now. It takes a lot to be this hated and have won a National Title with Michigan. It’s almost amazing what he’s accomplished.
October 26th, 2018 at 4:01 PM ^
Yup, I think Marcus Ray is doing an act to try and find a niche. Braylon’s comments strikes me as being similar to many message board posters after a loss. He’s just too prominent of a person to have his name attached to the comments
October 26th, 2018 at 4:06 PM ^
I will always wonder about how much input Berkley Edwards had in getting Braylon to lay off. (Also, their dad Stanley).
Whatever it was, Braylon shot his mouth off once this season and then stopped.
October 26th, 2018 at 5:54 PM ^
Especially for a guy who up ended David Boston in The Game. It is truly amazing how he has turned this fan base on him.
October 27th, 2018 at 12:37 AM ^
Well, one of the most enduring things Bo left us is that it's about the team. The team is 'Michigan.' Not Bo's Michigan, or Lloyd's, or Beilein's, or Yost's, and not just the sports. National Champion and All-American, or not, you forfeit all your good will in a hurry when you show the world you've forgotten that.
October 27th, 2018 at 8:22 AM ^
Exactly - you don't go against the family.
October 26th, 2018 at 3:03 PM ^
Marcus Ray wants you to talk about Marcus Ray.
That pretty much is it.
October 26th, 2018 at 3:03 PM ^
If you recall, there was definitely a tone of entitlement surrounding the Lloyd Carr era. This plagued the program later in his career and was very much evident during the Brady hoke years. Marcus ray is exactly that. He is an in titled know-it-all who only has his playing days to fall back on when people challenge his opinions.
October 26th, 2018 at 3:07 PM ^
If you recall, there was definitely a tone of entitlement surrounding the Lloyd Carr era
This sounds like projection to me. I don't recall that. The much bigger criticism I recall was that Lloyd was falling behind the times schematically.
October 26th, 2018 at 3:17 PM ^
That was a big deal. Stories of players not taking games seriously, acting like they owned the program/campus, and not backing up their bravado with their play were coming out of Ann Arbor regularly in 2007.
October 26th, 2018 at 3:39 PM ^
yep, country club atmosphere in the late carr era.
October 26th, 2018 at 3:24 PM ^
Ha... Did you ever meet any of the players from that era, particularly from 2002-2007?
Being a student on campus, I've got some stories I can tell you... some of them being personal experiences. "Go Blue" and all that good stuff but I'm not a Chad Henne fan...
