Are you already worried about DPJ not living up to his lofty rankings?

Submitted by aaamichfan on

Consensus top 25 overall player in his class, so far has looked good but not great. Obviously he has an excuse last year with nobody to deliver him the ball, but in general his body of work looks more like a high 3* or low 4* recruit at this point in his Michigan career.

Obviously the guy is going to be successful as hell, and could very well be prepping himself to go straight to Medical School without any career in football beyond college. But is anybody else just a tad underwhelmed with DPJ up to this point?

I did a review of DPJ's number to date (pre-season about a month ago) and compared him to some of the more recent prominent WR's at Michigan in the past 20 years.  So far he is projecting very similar to David Terrell and is in good company.  Unfortunately for him however, it looks like the tackle situation could have a significant impact on this year's numbers.  Here's a link to that diary post.

I am holding out hope that this site finally rolls out the "see how positive/negative a post is" feature, because while I could have assumed this was going to be a shit show just by the title, it would be nice to know beforehand just how bad it is.

Wholly shit ... DPJ is 10/10 on UFR with a TD and the steadiest hand on the WR core. He hasn't missed a play yet.  His PFF grade is like #2 in the league for WRs.  Wholly shit, he is having a great start to the season.

Agreed. DPJ is not the 5 star all world Receiver were were left to believe and what his measurables would leave most to believe

Sources in camp describe him as not being comfortable in the number 1 role and that Tarik Black was frequently his confidence booster

I think DPJ is a fine 2nd-3rd option tile guy. I think him being so young and thrust into the starting role with sub par quarterbacking has hurt his development a bit

On a side note the fascism and group think is at an all-time high on this board. Alot of Nazis prowling around after ever mediocre victory going back to last year stifling any dissenting opinion.

I enjoy this board much more during basketball season when posts slightly critical of the hoops squad aren't immediately shot down by whiney babies

" DPJ is not the 5 star all world Receiver were were left to believe and what his measurables would leave most to believe "

He's pretty much exactly what I expected. 5 star receivers largely DON'T live up to their hype.

2010-2015 recruiting classes contained 24 5 star receivers.

Of the 24:

5 met expectations (multiple All Conference, AA, 800+ yd, 7+ TD average year)

7 were slightly under (All Conference, 500+ yd, 4+ TD average year)

2 were way under (no honors, 300+ yd, 2+ TD average year)

10 were busts (no honors, <200yd, 1 TD average year)

Of the 6 #1 receivers:

2 met expectations (Calvin Ridley, Laquon Treadwell)

1 was slightly under (Dorial Green-Beckham)

1 was way under (Speedy Noil)

2 were busts (George Farmer, Kyle Prater)

Worst thread I've seen in a long time. The kid is a true sophomore, didn't even have a position coach last year. He's going to be and IS doing just fine

Yes, its fair to say that he hasn't looked like a 5* recruit so far.  He obviously had some things working against him last year but a 5* WR should be an elite athlete and he hasn't shown that yet.

He didn't come in as polished as a TBlack, nor does it seem like he's made the jump that Nico Collins did this summer.  Even someone like Cody White at MSU has adjusted to the college game at a more rapid rate.

His development/improvement this year is crucial, but I would be (pleasantly) surprised if he ever approached the production or level of play of a 5*.  I agree that he looks like a high 3* at this point.

For a top 25 player I thought he would already be a stud like Tee Higgins. He lacks cutting ability and aggressiveness. He seems a notch too slow(game speed) right now except for obviously when hes in the open field he has great speed.

Most of the WR issues in last year had little to do with talent of WR's.  It had more to do with QB play.  Patterson is just getting warmed up. Starting to see fruits of WR's this past week with a talented QB.  WM and SMU will be nice tune ups for the BIG season.  Look for WR's and QB to ascend as season goes on.  Oline play will improve and the sour taste of opening week and last year will be a distant memory.

I don't think so.... he made a couple of plays in this game that made me go wow!

  1. The TD grab was not an easy catch, and he was able to get 2+ feet down on it.
  2. The crossing route grab he made was an athletic catch, then he almost got in....

They're doing more quick hits with the passing game, w/roll outs...that's not going to lead towards Braylonfest results

Great question and post. I am underwhelmed by DPJ. Remember he spurned OSU to come to UM and his on of his best mates is Mike Weber, who is at OSU of course. DPJ looks lost running routes, is below average on blocking, and pretty much looks clueless on punt returns. He has the athletic skills, he just needs to stay focused and watch more film and practice his craft. He has a lot of potential.

It is only 2 games into the Sophomore season... Last year corners could maul our receivers since we had no QB, no OL so last year's numbers do not matter... So far this season he is doing well even though I am sure he was is the main target for defenders... Now with Nico balling out and the fact we have a QB DPJ's numbers will improve... I guarantee it because my opinion holds absolutely no weight in this scenario...

Definitely not. Context matters and it has basically been 2 games with a competent QB that he's working with and the most recent one was a blowout win in which we had a dominating rushing attack and throwing the ball was not necessary.

If anything, I've seen his incredible athleticism in play on the punt returns.

So no. Not at all.

This thread is silly.  He played as a true freshman with quite possibly the worst qb in the conference and a poorly conceived passing game.  On top of that he was a very raw talent.  I think you will see steady improvement from him throughout this season with a chance to be special as a JR/SR.  He will need to to get a little sharper with his releases and routes and getting in and out of breaks.  Gifted athlete, but needs a little seasoning.

He will be just fine. Just because a kid is rated as a 5* doesn't mean that he will come in as a 18-19 year old and light the league on fire. Lots of variables at play (o line, QB, etc)

He reminds me of Peppers.... Phenomenal athlete who isn't quite suited to be dominant at one single position. Maybe they should try moving him around like they did with Pep
