videotaped a rape?!  How on earth could this even be?  That implies some seriously fucked up pre-meditated nastiness.  What are the circumstances where a rape occurs and Nassar is there with a video camera?  This is 1992, it's not like he whipped out his phone or turned on a webcam.  Video cameras weighed like 30 pounds back then.

ok i went back and read the article more just because i wanted to be depressed the rest of the day.  It says he had the student come in for one of his examinations, and a cameraman was present filming it.  He also had her disrobe for a "breast exam", which was filmed "for a study," and then he gave her a pill that knocked her out (quaalude maybe a la cosby?) and when she woke up he was raping her and it was being filmed.

SHE WAS 17 FOR GOD'S SAKE.

I reached a point with this previously where I thought, this can't possibly get worse.  400+ victims of sexual assault over decades.  But I'll be damned if this isn't even worse.  Not just sexual assault under the guise of medical exams, but now including drugging victims, actually raping them, and videotaping it.  I can't tell a female what their experience is like, but my logical mind says this is way way worse.  Because you know now that this detail is out, there will be more victims who say it happened to them too.

Lord Jesus please have mercy.

another fucking gem from this shithole of an excuse for a university:

“The police told them that since she was an athlete, she had to report it to the athletic department,” according to the court documents. “The detective explicitly told them that he was powerless to investigate anything that takes place to the athletic department and to go to the athletic department.

This was 1992, I know you hear stories that local police ignore campus/athletic issues but I hope to God something of this magnitude wouldn't be dropped like this in 2018.

It will be easier to leave and this would be a statement against not only MSU but also OSU, PSU and the conference itself which has been complicit. Only people we can't give the finger to on the way out is the NCAA itself, but if we start a new athletic association, I'm fine with that too, whatever the ramifications.

Stopped over to the ole RCMB to see how they’re handling this.  I saw about 3 solid comments from rational human beings.  Then, I saw about 30 comments doubting the victim.  So, business as usual.  Most do seem to agree that the BOT needs to be trashed though.

Finally got some firsthand experience with how the die hard, Valenti-type Spartans process news like this.  First, it's pure denial.  When enough facts come to light, as happened with Nassar, then isolate an actor - this was Nassar, nothing to do with the university whatsoever.  Finally, when even that line of resistance crumbles, what's the fall back?  "It happens everywhere.  Don't you think your precious U of M [said with sneer] does the exact same thing!?"

Well no.  I don't.

One thing I'm confused about - maybe the article is just worded poorly here.

“(Perles) intervened and the charges were dropped against the coach, but she was forced to return the video, resign and sign a non-disclosure agreement,” according to the court documents. “Upon information and belief, Coach Martha made and retained a copy of the videotape.”

Assuming this means that the victim's coach was "forced to return the video, resign and sign a non-disclosure agreement," but what is the part about charges being dropped against the coach?

Regardless, that the coach who brought this to Perles's attention was basically fired speaks volumes.

i'm not sure at all, but the article said the coach consented on the girl's behalf since she was 17. maybe the point is the coach was part and parcel of the crime by enabling nassar, and perles made her resign as punishment, but to get her severance payment and to get the police to drop the charges, she had to return the tape and sign an NDA agreeing to keep it quiet.

So perles got the cops to drop the charges and got everyone involved to stay quiet (and may have thrown university money around to do it).

but instead, the coach made a copy of the tape first and kept it for 25 years....??? not sure if i'm reading that right.

that's my read on it.

And isn't there supposed to be more MSU cover-ups from MSU that ESPN dug up this summer that's going to be released soon, according to Chris Balas and umbig?

It's the old adage:  "Power corrupts.  Absolute power corrupts absolutely."

Whether it's Perles or Moonves or any of these other leaders that live in an insular bubble, there are just no effective checks and balances.

They do things that seem unthinkable and outrageous to us because they can.  They have zero notion of any kind of checks on their behavior.  Perles had no concerns whatsoever about what a 17 year old girl could say or do that would be believed by anyone.  So he did what the fuck he pleased.

They have the entire system wired, with passive oversight and cronies covering up their every move.

Too many Boards of Directors / Trustees / Etc. are not doing any kind of the real oversight they are supposed to do because they are stuffed with self-serving conflict-of-interest cronies.

Jesus.

If this is true, Perles needs to burn in hell with Paterno.  Except I hope he doesn't get out of it quickly by dying.  I hate that people like him get away with things like this for as long as they do.

if this show were to ever come remotely close to us I would abandon my fandom immediately.  Additionally I would fully remove the Michigan Degree from my resume, linkedin etc.  Whether it would actually amount to any difference or not I don't know and don't care, but i would not want to associate myself with a university like that.
