Greg McElroy: “All inidications are pointing towards Meyer being reinstated.”

Submitted by The Baughz on

I apologize for another Urban post. I am exhausted of them myself, but felt this was semi board worthy.

I was listening to ESPNU radio on siriusxm this morning and McElroy, who has stated several times since this news broke that he felt Meyer has no chance of coming back, is suddenly changing his tune.

He said he spent all day yesterday talking to multiple people who are plugged into this situation and now feels pretty confident in Urban returning. I felt this was a pretty big deal since McElroy felt strongly about Urban never returning to OSU. He did not mention any of his sources, but cited the fact that they all felt Urban followed correct protocol in reporting the incident and there’s no justification found to fire him.

McElroy isn’t a guy who i would go to for breaking news, but I do feel like he is somewhat plugged in. I’m not going to say we should all believe him and that Urban is definitely coming back, but just thought I’d share this and point out that some national media are starting to change their stance on Urbs returning.

Yes, finally someone gets it. So many people asking why urban would cover for Zach when he is such a terrible coach, person. It's simple. He knows shit about urban and urban is worried he'll talk. So he does everything he can to keep him quiet, including probably paying him to go on ESPN and support him.

Correct.  I hope we all know this is the reason, and why McMurphy keeps hinting at it.  Smith wasn't even a good coach.  Would be hard to believe Urban would tolerate this guy for this long at two different schools, even without the repeated wife-beating.  Zach Smith wouldn't have held a job as a carny, let alone one on a major program's coaching staff.

(Oh and I know that sentimental crap about Earle Bruce.  Aw, such a sweet story.  Dumb Buckeyes get misty-eyed about Urban's "loyalty" being his only fault.  I understand, they have cognitive dissonance to tend to, but hopefully no one outside Ohio is buying that canard.)

whatever happens.  If he comes back, O$U's reputation is sullied all the more.  Going forward, I can't understand how any recruit would commit to a guy/program where he so blatantly lied, and had an institution that found it acceptable.  That's a pretty big objection for them to overcome.

The powers-that-be at that school are inviting even more scrutiny and hassle.

You don’t know why kids would commit to Meyer? Are you new to college football or have you just not been paying attention the last decade?

The guy wins and sends kids to the NFL in droves. Sure, there will be some mothers out there with additional questions for him, and maybe even one or two that tell their son they will not play for OSU as long as Meyer is there. But this will barely have any effect on Meyer’s ability to recruit. He will still get the guys he wants.

There has literally been nothing said about Meyer in the past few weeks that hasn’t already been getting said about him for the last 10 years. If it hasn’t stopped recruits before it sure as hell won’t stop them now.

So basically this tells me that so long as you tell your boss that you are extending the contract of a domestic violence perpetrator you are good to go.  Got it.

They've seen how hard it is to get a quality coach without upsetting the apple cart (see UofM).   Meyer even with the hypocrisy and it's effects is better than 99% of the coaches out there.

They'll spin this that Meyer did the right thing and was trying to help the couple out and not just throw someone away.   When they go 11-1 no one will care.

The good news is that Harbaugh will beat him like a rented drum until Meyer has more "heart problems."

He'll still be a liar that had to have an "investigative" team of OSU cronies step in to clear his name and protect his job. These are facts that should be pointed out in many conversations with recruits.

FWIW I have a profressor at OSU (welding) who comes in my office 2 or 3x a week to get supplies. He said yesterday Urban won’t be touched. He said there’s way more to this story than what’s being reported. He could be full of shit, I thought so yesterday. But this seems to back his story up.

He said there’s way more to this story than what’s being reported.

I'm sure there is more, but what more detail would make Meyer look better?

That Zach Smith is telling the truth and never hit his wife?

That Meyer wanted to fire Smith but someone else (Gene Smith?  Earle Bruce?) prevented him?

I'm guessing it's just that Meyer did go through the official protocol in 2015 so OSU can't fire him with cause.

He didn’t elaborate honestly, he’s an old school dude. He wouldn’t say what it was. Like I said, he could be full of shit. To his credibility, I can say he honestly doesn’t care about the team or Urban Meyer. He’s not a sports guy what so ever and has said on many occasions he could care less if they win or lose because he doesn’t even watch the games.

Granted there’s probably a lot of this going around and he could just be blowing smoke because he’s a professor there. He just doesn’t strike as the type of man who would lie about this.

How do these interpretations fit?

A thorough investigation would cause a lot of Title IX problems. They don't just involve Meyer and Zach Smith. Meyer wouldn't be the most culpable party.

Meyer knows too much. Could be related to Title IX issues, could be a whole range of other things. Arrangements with boosters never went away, for example.

Each should lead to more generous settlement offers. That's safer than keeping him around until the next expose hits the fan.

Yes, anyone who thought this wasn't going to happen was fooling themselves, the wagons are being circled and there's at least a plausible story of "I discussed the issue with him and didn't know how to handle a relationship with WILDLY conflicting stories.  I have learned a lot and will go forward and be a powerful advocate for this in the future."

No criminal convictions to brush under the rug and legal maneuvering around whether Title IX reporting was required doesn't give anywhere near enough justification to fire Meyer and there just isn't the smoking gun they would need to avoid a SUPER expensive lawsuit.

Meyer's a crappy person, we just saw it, but at least in this case not a proven criminal.

what i'm curious about is why isn't greg smith on leave now too?  if he knew everything meyer knew...

Wouldn’t it be kind of “fun” if Urban gets through this and comes back - and then gets caught doing his many other slimy, crooked deals? It would only prove how osu is only about football wins.

So surprising.  I am glad he’s coming back.  Trust me when a person is allowed to do wrong over and over again, eventually he or she will suffer the consequences.  You cannot hide Urban from Urban.  Have you had a chance to look at the fans who showed up to that rally the other day?  A fan base that deranged needs well just, reread the word after that!  They are a match made in(insert your own noun).  I am extremely happy that he will return I’m sure that OOIH will be revealed one day and when that day comes, they’ll just continue on with supporting another leader just like the previous two or three head coaches.  Lord I forgot how much I adored John Cooper!!!  Let OOIH be OOHI it’s no biggie we will just have to be better and that’s right around the corner!!!  BRING BACK,”THE LIAR!”

I'm OK with him coming back if he did the right thing.  However, if the investigation does not answer why Smith was fired last month, but yet his contract was renewed with knowledge of the 2015 incidence and history of alleged abuse, then the investigation will be scrutinized.  In addition, I think the public wants to hear what Shelly knew and who she communicated it with.  And, I personally would like to see Meyer's cell phone texts and emails regarding the "reporting" and communicating about what he knew and when.  If that comes up by the book, let him coach.  If that was not part of the investigation or isn't provided to the public the reinstatement will be scrutinized.

"... no justification found to fire him."

That must mean no legal justification to fire him for cause because I can think of a lot of moral and ethical justifications to fire him.

But honestly I don't even think this is about the $40m buyout. If they keep Urban, it's because of the Ws, not the buyout. Those Ws are worth a lot more.
