A surprising name has emerged as the Michigan WR making the biggest strides this offseason

When I read the tweet I was expecting it to be Donovan Peoples Jones or Nico Collins. The article states DPJ and Black are continuing their impressive ascent but its second year Walk on Jake McCurry that's the one turning heads in practice

And to back it up even former LB Mike McCray tweeted "Knew who they was talking about before I read it. Jake is a problem." https://twitter.com/BigPlayMcCray_9/status/1007363572412841985

It’s not only the maturing process, but there’s a lot that has to happen in order to get evaluated and recruited.

If you don’t attend camps, the recruiting sites aren’t going to see you and rank you. We’ve seen that with multiple players here at Michigan since Harbaugh arrived.

If you go to a small school, it’s less likely that these big colleges will find out about you and send someone out to do an in-person evaluation, especially if the head coach at that small high school doesn’t have connections.

This is why I generally take the recruiting ranking of an individual player with a grain of salt. At the end of the day, it means absolutely nothing. 5* or 2*, scholarship or walk-on, it doesn’t matter. If you can play, you can play.

Another message sent. This one has been out there for a couple of weeks though. Scholarship players are on notice. Do NOT take reps off; put in a few extra reps!

I'm interested to see how the WR depth chart looks right now. Obviously Tarik and DPJ are 1a and 1b, but does Perry still have command of the slot? or did one of Schoenle, Martin, McDoom, McCurry take over? How much playing time will Collins get? He was starting to look good near the end of last year.

I guess same goes with TE usage. McKeon and Gentry are 1a and 1b. Wheatley is your blocking TE as long as he's healthy. But can he also play a role in receiving? Eubanks could be a star with his athleticism. Muhammad probably warrants some playing time with the new redshirt rule too.

I've been fooled by off-season hype turning into mid-season gripe too many times now.

Tap me on the shoulder when he's catching touchdown passes.

Michaal Dwumfour also just retweeted the article saying "He's going to be something special"

Sounds like we might actually have some walk on magic here

I'm going to hold my reservation on this one. I feel that this might be traditional spring hype. Every year for 4 years Joe Bolden was the man and we sure the hell didn't see it in the fall. I hope he proves me wrong.

Mettelus likes the kids as well.

Metellus revealed that one wideout in particular has caught his eye so far — and it’s not someone you’d expect.

“It’s a great competition between those guys,” he exclaimed. “They’re a lot more aggressive, and are more disciplined when it comes to catching the ball. They’re more mature now. One of them — [redshirt freshman] Jake McCurry — has really shown a lot of improvement from last season. He’s the one standing out to me right now.”

Harbaugh is just stirring the pot for summer competition.  In reality this is just bluster by the coaches.  Like when Zordich was blasting Hill.  Come on man, Hill is the best corner in the B1G ... wait maybe Long is better?  Yes, sir they be the two top, elite f-ing best in the nation.  Some walk-on WR McCurry is just bluster to make scholarship guys work harder this summer.  He will never see the field.

Every year there is hype about a walkon.  In the last 20+ years of Michigan Football, I can count on one hand the number of walkons (non kicker types or fullbacks) who were starter/difference maker types.  Good for him, and hopefully he will be a difference maker.  But right now I see this as a motivational tactic and I will believe it when I see it.

DPJ, Black, Perry, Collins, Martin, McDoom, Schoenle. Gentry, McKeon, Eubanks, Wheatley.

Pass catching should not be a concern this year. If these guys don’t put up high numbers, it’ll be due to QB injury, LT issues, or both.
