and I'm glad Fitz is engaging in this game and showing a deep desire to beat up sparty....Had Fitz been given the opporutnity to run behind the same o-line Hart did, Fitz would have huge numbers as well....BEAT STAEE!!!!!

Shutup and play football.  This is dumb.  Probably taken out of context but no one will really read what he said and put it into context.

Hart's comments were taken out of context b/c he was making an analogy about a little brother wanting to win and toying with him before beating him.  Glad Sparty was able to read into it enough to realize that they were the little brother is this concept of analogies, but then they continue to perpetuate it with their actions.

Just win.

Even though it doesn't appear that Fitz was actually calling MSU "little brother" himself, I really wouldn't have a problem with it if he was.

People have been saying it so long, even our players are starting to believe it. "We" didn't label them little brother. Hart was referring to a quote from a Spartan from a week or two prior. That's why he said "That's what they think, so that's what I think."

That Meme has been beaten to death.  The fact that anybody on our side would bring it up again is stupid.  The fact that anybody on their side would get their panties in a bunch over it is equally stupid.

Can't we just move on to new ways to be embarassed?  Like sky writing "Go Blue" over their stadium?

This is another non story manufactured by old media to meet a deadline. Fitz recalls a Mike Hart quote, mentions that it probably annoyed State (if that's not an understatement...), and says that Michigan needs to take care of business by winning on the road. That's not inflammatory. That's by-the-numbers generic player speak.

Dude, while I don't think they should be trash talking right now it really doesn't matter. Cut the bulletin board material bs. "Oh they're just going to fire Sparty up" shut up. They're coached by Mark Dantonio and get no respect outside of their own town most of the time, they're already going to be fired up. No one's comments are going to make them run faster, hit harder or play smarter. You don't take on superhuman abilities just because someone trash talks you. It actually might make you more emotional which may take away from your execution, if anything. Besides that it doesn't change anything but the pre-game conversations. We're going to get their best shot regardless. Pull your skirts down.

That's what they are.

Fact, if Michigan goes on to win the next 5 games between these 2 teams after Hart says "little brother" then no Michigan fan would care about this.

It's just because we started losing, even though it had NOTHING to do with the comments.

It's such a shortsided thought process. You all act like we ONLY lost to MSU during those years. Like this fired up MSU, but we were beating the snot out of everyone else.

No, we sucked (in comparison to our standards) and we lost to everyone...not just MSU.

Run defense is the one thing that this spartan team does very, very well.  I think Michigan has a good chance to win, but I doubt we do it on the ground.  Maybe this comment will be good for a couple of yards of separation on a play action pass?

These are such nothing comments and every michigan board is all "OMGZ FITZ OH NOOOOOOOOOOS PLEASE NO".

Everyone chill out...you aren't playing in the game...nothing to be afraid of. Fitz is confident...good. The level of fear and paranoia throughout the interwebz from the UM fanbase is having me believe msu players are personally going to be showing up at various fans residence to personally kick asses.

let's all calm down.

WolverineJet....I"m with you all the way! We are getting passive the point (and I don't mean this right at mgoblog posters only)  that it's almost a genuine, palpable, and physical fear from the fanbase towards msu. I don't get it...

It sounds to me like he was bringing up the little bro quote for a reason and carrying it forward. The bigger point of the article is that he doesn't like State because he felt disrespected by them. State failed to show any class or respect the last time we were there. This is hardly shocking, though disappointing that the MSU coaches and administration have made this a personal thing. And I'm personally disappointed that we played into this gestalt with the skywriting. We're in no position to complain at this point. In the end, this is one article that says little and nothing new. Just informing us that State is still State and it's still a rivalry. Hopefully, Fitz will find his payback on the field for MSUs prior insults to UM.

Everyone needs to stop pretending Mike Hart's little brother comments are the reason the losing streak started. Lloyd Carr's departure and the subsequent departure of all the talent are the reason for the losing streak.

"This is a business trip, but deep down, somewhere in my heart, it's personal. That's how I'm going to approach it."

I actually rather like how Toussaint puts this here. We can quarrel about the use of "little brother" (I think it refers more to a general historic mindset), but I do like the attitude that the team seems to have about this game this year. They expect a tough game and they seem to plan on giving exactly that back. I don't think we would expect any less, and I hope Fitz has the chance to show MSU just how disrespected he felt through his play, as I hope the whole team does.

I've always hated this meme, and remains one of the few dark marks on Mike Hart's otherwise-positive tenure at UM.  I hope UM wins this weekend because, well, that means they'll have a better chance of winning the division, but hopefully this dies quickly once the connection to that particular era fades.

It's interesting you feel that way, because I have the exact opposite view.  I think most trash-talk is silly and eminently forgettable, but Hart calling State "little brother" was trash-talk virtuosity.  That's how you do it--you say something that bites them so hard, people are stil bringing it up years later.  I loved that quote then, I still love it now.

I know people don't like the little brother thing because now it's just a big thing that won't go away but that was the apex of trash talk. That one sentence Hart uttered got under MSU's skin so bad that it wont go away. Plus, we all know it to be true.

I love the quote too. You're never going to trash talk more effectively than Hart did there. The fact that it has run amok since then does not change the fact that it was a perfect jab

in the first place -- is that Mike Hart was a damn liar. His whole schtick was that, with 8 minutes to go, U-M knew it would win. That the guys were loose and laughing on the sideline, and that Michigan was just toying with MSU. You go back and look at the U-M sideline in the 4th quarter and tell me if you see any of that. I was at the game sitting across from the U-M bench, and the body language I saw was not of confidence.

Toussaint needs to keep quiet and play football, which he has been average to poor at except for a few occasions. His overall body of work is so far down the list of Michigan running backs it is silly for him to be spouting off. Before labeling State he needs to establish himself.

The statements of players in their early twenties don't win or lose games. Mike hart didn't lose four games against Michigan state. The players, the depth and the lack of skill against the opponent lost those games. If coaches do their jobs and players step up and play how they should, we will be right in this game.
