is it just another poll? Or does that take into account strength of schedule and other factors?
January 21st, 2013 at 11:39 AM ^
It means that a group who isn't a shameless homer thinks that Michigan is #1. AND that group has the ESPN.com bully pulpit.
Mostly, it means that you should enjoy it. You know, during that time when you are bummed about life today, you can sit back, smile, and think, "Michigan is #1 in ESPN's Power Rankings!"
January 21st, 2013 at 11:42 AM ^
Seems like another small +1 on an already good day to me.
January 21st, 2013 at 11:30 AM ^
Duke is a dramatically different team without Kelly. Glad that this writer noticed - but sad that it won't be reflected in the polls.
January 21st, 2013 at 11:37 AM ^
why should it...the polls are based on your record and who you have beaten and where...
January 21st, 2013 at 11:39 AM ^
That's not true. They are voted on, not computer generated.
January 21st, 2013 at 3:58 PM ^
no shit....but the pollers are supposed to vote on the teams resume and play. This isn't the tourney where injury and recent play may affect pole position over record.
January 21st, 2013 at 11:30 AM ^
Now let the AP and Coach's poll follow suit. Go blue!
January 21st, 2013 at 11:31 AM ^
I'm confused why people are so in love with Kansas.
January 21st, 2013 at 11:38 AM ^
they've been on a ridiculous run
January 21st, 2013 at 11:38 AM ^
January 21st, 2013 at 11:50 AM ^
Just checked and they do have 6 wins vs RPI top 50 teams, so I guess that is pretty impressive. I just didn't realize Colorado, Belmont, Iowa State, Temple, and Baylor were so highly rated.
January 21st, 2013 at 11:56 AM ^
January 21st, 2013 at 12:15 PM ^
20. colorado
27. Belmont
26 Ohio State
50. Temple
36. Iowa State
43. Baylor
That's why I thought they were overrated, lack of top 25 wins. BUT 6 wins vs top 50 opponents is impressive.
January 21st, 2013 at 12:18 PM ^
That the RPI is complete and utter crap. It's worth monitoring because the committee considers it, but it's not at all a good way to figure out whether or not teams are good.
January 21st, 2013 at 1:30 PM ^
Syracuse beating Louisville was pretty damn impressive, I would say.
Zona, however, I completely agree with your opinion. They have been struggling to beat pretty poor opponents, and should have lost to Colorado.
January 21st, 2013 at 11:32 AM ^
It doesn't have any real value other than an opinion of the 18 ESPN writers that voted on it... nice to michigan at the top though.
January 21st, 2013 at 11:39 AM ^
- Seven ESPN voters listed Michigan at #1
- Stephen Bardo was one of two voters to list Michigan lower than fourth -- he has Michigan in the 5 spot
- The other? Rece Davis has Michigan at #6 (c'mon Rece!)
Obviously this doesn't mean anything since it's not official but it's still nice to see 7/18 ESPN basketball folks voting Michigan #1.
January 21st, 2013 at 11:44 AM ^
Actualy... Bardo voted us at #4 and Bilas voted Michigan at #5. And Reese, stick to football.
January 21st, 2013 at 11:44 AM ^
You are correct. Now we can have another reason to dislike Jay Bilas!
January 21st, 2013 at 1:21 PM ^
I'm not even mad at that. Bilas probably bases his rankings on his power index thing, so that's fair. Also, depending on who you talk to, the top 5 teams or so (Michigan, Duke, Kansas, Arizona, 'Cuse) are all pretty much interchangeable at this point.
January 21st, 2013 at 3:27 PM ^
I was being facetious more than anything. In the grand scheme I don't really care what Jay Bilas thinks.
Somebody's gotta be the bad guy, right?

TeamRankings.com uses an algorithm to calculate these, but I thought the board might be interested in their comparison of Division I and conference power rankings across 13 different power metrics. They agree with the #1, both overall and in conference. Actually, I dare say that I like the conference column quite a bit.
Rating | Value | Rank | Conf Rank |
Away Power Rtg | 121.8 | #7 | #2 |
Home Power Rtg | 124.2 | #3 | #1 |
Conf Power Rtg | 122.5 | #6 | #1 |
Non-Conf Power Rtg | 125.2 | #2 | #1 |
Wins Power Rtg | 128.9 | #1 | #1 |
Predictive Power Rtg | 118.2 | #2 | #1 |
Overall Power Rtg | 123.5 | #1 | #1 |
Last 10 Gms Power Rtg | 122.3 | #3 | #1 |
Home Adv Power Rtg | 2.4 | #187 | #7 |
SOS Power Rtg | 106.2 | #4 | #2 |
Neutral Power Rtg | 128.3 | #3 | #1 |
Overall RPI Rtg | 0.7 | #5 | #1 |
SOS RPI Rtg | 0.6 | #14 | #4 |

I think you could probably order the top 5-7 in any combination and have legitimate reasons for doing so (except Florida maybe). There's a legitimate reason to any one of those 7 teams be #1 right now.
1. Michigan
1. Kansas
1. Syracuse
1. Duke
1. Florida
1. Louisville
1. Indiana
8. Arizona
9. Butler

While it's nice to be recognized and would be nice to be number one in the actual polls that matter, we need not concern ourselves with being number one during the season. The only number that matters right now is the "W" column and then after that, the only number that is important is the tournament seed. We gotta earn either a 1 or 2 and if that happens, I think we will go to the Final Four.
January 21st, 2013 at 12:33 PM ^
January 21st, 2013 at 12:47 PM ^
Since polls are by and large a reflection of your record/performances...I think it's safe to say that they matter. Obviously the last one of the year matters the most, but I don't think it's an entirely worthless exercise to talk about michigan and how they are perceived through the polls at the moment. If you don't care about them..then you don't really have to comment in a thread about them.
January 21st, 2013 at 1:32 PM ^
matter enough for you to click on a thread obviously about them and then post 30+ replies down. But congrats, you're super cool for not caring about polls.
January 22nd, 2013 at 9:28 AM ^
Reading comprehension fail, sir. Are polls entertaining and even in a way gratifying? Yes, they can be. I am curious to see what the perception of Michigan's program is. Do they matter when the NC is crowned following a 68 team tourrnament format? Not one bit.

Kinda disappointing to be behind Duke when they got rocked by NC State...but whatever...that's why they're so hated.
January 21st, 2013 at 12:53 PM ^
But they also beat the team that beat us. I don't have a problem - their overall résumé is very good. In any event, they've got a tough road game at Miami coming up next.
January 21st, 2013 at 12:57 PM ^
Yeah, but I'm biased, so I prefer not to consider the OSU stuff. That, and, I hate Duke.
January 21st, 2013 at 12:46 PM ^
Rivals 100 updated as well. I would post a thread but I'm too lazy.
January 21st, 2013 at 12:50 PM ^
Wow! I'm surprised we moved up to #2 in the polls. We've got a great chance to take the top spot now.
January 21st, 2013 at 12:56 PM ^
Kansas is on the road at K State, and Duke is on the road at Miami. We have a great chance of being # 1 next week.
January 21st, 2013 at 1:12 PM ^
*shakes fist at Duke*
January 21st, 2013 at 1:19 PM ^
Coaches ranked us #3, only getting 1 first place vote, behind Duke (#1, 20) and Kansas (#2, 8!?).
January 21st, 2013 at 1:35 PM ^
in the thread about the polls from this weekend: we'd get no credit for beating the #9 team at their place and Kansas wouldn't get dinged for squeaking by unranked Texas. I'm just surprised Cuse didn't jump us as well. Nice to see the AP and ESPN showing some love.
January 21st, 2013 at 1:50 PM ^
This week, the AP love is broken down courtesy of Pollspeak as usual and the results are a substantial turnaround from last week - we managed eleven 1st place votes this week, as well thirty 2nd place votes. Thirteen folks voted Michigan at 3rd, nine opted for 4th place, and the remaining two voters apparently didn't turn in ballots from from what I can see.
January 21st, 2013 at 1:23 PM ^
Michigan is the top team in the top CBB Conference.
I'll take that.
January 21st, 2013 at 1:32 PM ^
5-6 teams with a credible argument to be #1 right now, and we are closer to the top of that group than the bottom. Take care of business this week and maybe Duke gets tripped up @ Miami.
January 21st, 2013 at 1:37 PM ^
I thought Michigan was going to be #1 in the poll but the duke nuthuggers prevail. At least Michigan is a step closer to #1.
Also the Women's team moved up to #23 and is facing #8 penn state tonight at 6:30 on BTN in a battle for first place in the B1G.
Combined Michigan basketball (Men's and Women's rec): 32-3. Amazing.
