Let's speculate wildly: Gareon Conley
Michigan's to lose still, assuming we still want him. OSU is out essentially. Only way I see him at Oregon is if he gets his offer before visiting...which I doubt. This is trending back to the good guys. And I'm glad, he's a hell of a prospect.

as a fan and not a recruit. He was in the stands, never interacted with any recruits or coaches and left the game early. Thats being tweeted by Ohio fans as well.

And can't bear to watch his future teammates suffer, especially when he can't be on the field to help.
Guess that clinches it.

I’m assuming the story on Conley is behind a pay wall and that’s why nobody is giving any solid link/info.
November 26th, 2012 at 10:23 PM ^
...the paywalled info Conley is quoted as saying he didn't go to visit Ohio per se, he just went to the game. Validated his "to the game" comment by pointing out that, while there, he contacted nobody from Ohio.
Buckeye posters on Scout boards have said this as well...

Maybe it didn't count because while it was at osu it was against michigan so technically he could have been there to see us maybe

Well, if Michigan is fighting UConn or Northwestern for a 2014 commit, cross that bridge when you get to it.
November 27th, 2012 at 8:57 AM ^
I mean, Conley didn't take an official visit which I always assumed was the visit committed recruits weren't allowed to take or their spot would be pulled. Conley lives in Ohio and went to a football game in Ohio, payed his way and watched in the stands. If that was agaisnt this so called "policy" where would it end? A guy can't even go watch a football game and keep his spot in the class? That seems a little harsh IMHE.
There is a very clear line that can't be crossed if I understand the policy and that is recruits can't take official visits to other schools and if they do, they will no longer be considered a commit. Do whatever the hell else you want, go on vacation anywhere in the country and take in a game as a fan, but don't take an official visit to another school. That doesn't seem too difficult to interpret IMHE.
November 27th, 2012 at 12:15 AM ^
Are you the gun or the strain . . .
November 26th, 2012 at 10:16 PM ^
My understanding of this policy is a little different from what I'm reading in most of these posts, but I could be wrong.
Setting Dawson aside (because something strange happened there), my impression is that if a Michigan-committed recruit reopens his commitment, Michigan will reopen its search to fill that spot. We might still recruit that same prospect - if we want him - but he's no longer guaranteed a place in the class, and another prospect might grab the seat before him. Being committed, in other words, guarantees that the staff won't say, "Sorry, we found someone better." By looking around, you lose that guarantee but you still could be recruited by the Michigan staff. It doesn't mean that, by policy, they will stop considering you altogether.
Is that consistent with what others believe? Obviously, we're all kind of guessing about this.
November 26th, 2012 at 10:23 PM ^
That is in general agreement with my understanding. But, given that policy what keeps a kid from taking a visit and then recommitting shortly thereafter. Unless there are other kids of the same or higher caliber waiting for an opening, what are the odds that someone loses their spot under a quick turn around scenario?
November 27th, 2012 at 1:18 AM ^
They might not be taken back quickly, the staff may not accept a commitment for like a month after a decommitment while they feel out their other options, or something along those lines.
November 26th, 2012 at 10:02 PM ^
Not sure I understand the "well he let the coaches know of his plans" argument. Remember Richardson and RJS? They were open about it but still were told not to do it.
November 26th, 2012 at 10:02 PM ^
Sorry guys, I'm sort of accustomed to subtle differences from being a Scout member. I never even though of it as a big deal, as threads(titles) such as this are often the norm. I must agree with the complaints that were given though, and will be more careful in the future.
Basically, Conley said he's still committed to Michigan 100%.

From the dark and mysterious fog of your title, we have found illumination. For that, you must be given credit.
November 26th, 2012 at 10:18 PM ^
Did he say anything about what happens if Oregon calls two months from now with an offer? My sense is that Oregon could be his true dream school (if not Michigan), not OSU.
November 26th, 2012 at 10:25 PM ^
Tremendous was able to get ahold of him, and asked the Oregon question. Conley provided no answer. So take it FWIW but at least for now he's in the class.

Their OC is said to be the hire immediatly after Chip leaves for the NFL. Quick succession with someone in house will not make a huge deal to most recruits IMO

Worrying about things the staff is paid to worry about isn't one of them.
November 26th, 2012 at 10:39 PM ^
OK, that's a thread title I can get behind. I'm changing my vote.
Through his visitation process I didn't think he was really on the outs at Michigan by the way he handled it, and felt like once he looked around he'd know he made the right decision in the first place. I'm wondering now who else will be joining him in Ann arbor. I'm guessing Green, and that's not even really a guess. Stranger things have happened, but it looks like we're the best fit for him. I'd also like to see a lineman replace Dawson, and I'd like that to be Hunt. Outside of that we've done pretty good this year. There could easily be room for more with all the kids who we could backdate, I'd still love to get McQuay on board by February on NSD, but maybe that's just wishful thinking. Who knows how USC will be looking by then. With Green and another lineman, plus Conley and Stribling getting ratings bumps Michigan could have the #2 overall recruit class.
November 26th, 2012 at 10:32 PM ^
It's nice that the distraction of actual football is finally over so that we can get back to the important stuff: football recruiting.
(Not meant as criticism, by the way, as I'm just as guilty as anyone.)

When I saw this comic,
I immediately thought of football recruiting.
"Ohio State beating us could have a serious impact on our future recruiting, which we only care about because it could help us eventually beat teams like Ohio State..."
