Air Force does NOT suck (Temptation Chant)
Movement starting on Facebook to eradicate the "You Suck" chant for Air Force game (hopefully it sticks...)
I'm all for the "Go Blue" replacement of "You Suck." I tired of You Suck sophomore year and would love to see it leave. Maybe the dumbest thing the Michigan fan base does is to chant "You Suck" when we're down several scores...

FG: but you ain't got no legs LtDan.
I'm sorry, but there's never a bad time to chant "Go Blue!"
To me chanting "Go Blue" when we're down multilple scores in games is ridiculous too, and you can hardly call it original eitherWhat? When we chant "Go Blue," we're cheering on our team. When they're behind is all the more time to cheer them on.
Hey, Lionsfan, it's your mom.
She says, "YOU SUCK".
Somehow chanting "you suck" while down multiple scores makes more sense?
I think they are used to much worse when they play their rivalry games with the other academies. "You suck" needs to be eliminated when we are losing in games for sure, I mean how stupid does it sound then? But I don't know that it should be changed for certain opponents.
If it doesn't work when we're behind, it needs to be scrapped, because asking fans to remember two different chants at the end of "Temptation" (one when ahead; one when behind) is a bit much.
I second the "Go Blue!" replacement.
I like the 'You Suck' chant... Maybe I'm the minority, but hey, hey, hey
It sounds sweet after a huge 3rd down stop...however when we are losing, it is the worst thing that ever happened ever.
It might sound sweet in the student section, but you can hardly hear it in most of the stadium because the non-students don't chant it.
We need something that everyone in the stadium can chant. "Go Blue" fits that purpose quite well.
You probably can't hear the student section because you are old.
Yep, I'm an old fart - I graduated in 2003.
In the south end of the stadium, you can't hear it very well. It was also almost impossible to hear the marching band from there until it was mic'd up.
In a stadium with our acoustics, if you want a chant to succeed, it's got to be embraced by everybody, not just the students.
it's certainly audible on television. the mics pick it up all the time.
Could be because the TV mics are right in front of the student section (well, really the band which is in the student section).
I suggest we lose to them for the sake of patriotism as well.

I don't care about the chant as I'm not a big rah-rah guy when I go to games to begin with, so I rarely say anything. But this just seems stupid to me. Who cares that they're Air Force? They're a football team in this instance. It's not like this would even be a form of civil disobedience or preventing the military from doing their job. I'm probably a little biased because I'm a pacifist, but this is just silly to me.
First time I heard it as a little kid I thought it was dumb, and a bit classless. Now it's a sort of thing that I think makes us look bad. For a few years, too, I was wondering which team they were referring to. I can't believe THIS is a tradition people would fight for...
It's a dumb chant. If you're going to do it, then at least own it like hockey and make it a string of expletives that will take days to explain to your kids. Even better, just say Go Blue!
I'm all for any reason to get rid of the "you suck" chant.
As an Air Force veteran and current student I will be shouting whatever the chant may be. While I agree that "You Suck" is rather immature, suspending it just because it's Air Force is ridiculous.
I have many friends that are still serving, and spent almost 6 years in myself, but the military is not something that should be held sacred or somehow above hearing the normal half-cocked heckling that goes on during a football game, especially something as generic as a "you suck" that's said to everyone, at every game.
and as a 2 time grad of M, I assure you that we are very respectful of all of the Armed Forces. I understand why some people think it's arrogant, but it's just fun.
Has always been the addition of You Suck at the end of Temptation. We didn't do it when I was a student ('98), but sometime shortly after it started. It's not even clever, it's offensive, and can't we come up with something better - oh yeah, Go Blue. And no, Go Blue never sounds stupid, up by 3 scores, down by 5 scores (oh, the RichRod era).
As for doing it while the US Air Force Academy is playing us, and their cadets are watching ... you're right, they are tougher than almost every member of the student body. And I'm sure they won't even be able to make out what is being said, but that isn't the point. Remember, that entire student body has signed up to protect this country. While we can have different views on prior US military action (most of which is not decided upon by the military - our commander in chief is a civilian commander) they go and serve where they are told and when they are told. They put their lives at risk defending most of us, who live under and are able to do what we want because of that protection. Not always perfect, but definitely honorable.
In summary, You Suck is a stupid cheer and should be cut out permanently. However, it might be a nice touch to do it starting with the Air Force game. My opinion.
but quite ridiculous. There was a great CBS documentary this past spring on football at Army/Navy which followed players at each academy for an entire season, leading up to the big game. The cadets and midshipmen were incredibly impressive young people. But I remember one of them vocalizing one of his biggest complaints about playing for an academy: people in visiting stadiums were cheering them when they entered the stadium. He said when you're the visiting team, you want to get booed, it's part of the fun of football.
I'll boo them when they enter, if "you suck" is going, I'm not going to sit in judgment of the chant. It is what it is. And you suck, Air Force, because you're playing Michigan. Thanks for your service. Now punt, you bastards.
talk to someone who knows the rhythm and can do it properly, mkay? Cause nothing is worse than a group of drunks doing it all out of rhythm.
I think this is fine, but believe me, no one on the team is going to get their little feelers hurt. They will be happy to be playing in front of such a huge crowd against this storied team. If you think that men trained to fight and die are going to get thier feathers ruffled by an incoherent and half full student section chanting "you suck" you don't have a very good handle on their sensibilities.
That said, I would still cheer for them out of the tunnel and when they score / make a good play.
Seconded. I work for a defense contractor and some of the USMC vets at work tease our fighter pilot consultant for being in the "chairforce." Somehow I don't think that Lt. Col. goes home and cries to his mommy at the end of the workday.
You're wrong. I've never chanted it, and very few people around me ever have. The chant has never gotten much traction outside of the student section. It should be retired.
Cuz it's not.
What are you talking about? It's a hallmark of creativity and wit! Perry Como would be proud.
When Taylor Martinez drops back to pass, it's quite appropriate actually.
More appropriate for T-Mart: replacing it with ARM PUNT
I am pretty sure that if i was on the opposing team, i would want the full big house experience. These are D1 athletes, and I am sure that they would want to be treated just as any other football team would. They're not looking for hand outs just because they are at the academy.
Maybe instead of "you suck" we could yell "praise jesus" or something like that there.
for a badass flyover its the day we play Air Force
Also, the "You suck" chant sucks.
That right there, that's ironic...
From the facebook page:
"This isn't about football"
Yes it is. It's a football game and we're harassing our opponent. Somehow I think the air force guys are tough enough to take a little razzing from other kids thier age; and I'm sure many in the Michigan crowd know at least 1 person who served or did serve in the military.
My thoughts:
Saying "you suck," is just directed at the football team. It doesn't mean that you suck for being a part of Air Force. And I'm sure the players are smart enough to know that. They're football players. They have, no doubt, heard much worse in opposing stadiums.
With that said, I long ago got tired of the you suck chant. I thought it was funny for a couple games in 2006 when it started but now, I don't know. It just feels lazy and non-creative. Plus, I get the feeling that the majority of the students don't even know the song title, "Temptation." They just refer to it as the "You Suck Song."
I assume some of them know it as the "Goalie - Sieve Song".
Back in the day (1997), everybody would cheer the defense as they came off of the field after a stop. Now, the students instead semi-rhythmically chant "You Suck." That is not an improvement.
I'm pretty sure it was being said before 2006. I thought I remember it back in my freshman year, which was 2004.
