On iPhone in Safari post-Drupal 10 update. The bar at the top (with the menu for clicking over to mgoboard, the search, and login) is not clickable except for the “mgoblog” logo.

I’ve got the plug in hybrid…

I’ve got the plug in hybrid Rav-4 and I love it—extremely zippy in electric mode, which was a bit unexpected for me but makes sense in retrospect. We use it about 95% of the time all electric.

Super interesting I sort of…

Super interesting. I sort of assume some percentage of three pointers shot against elite defenses are late-shotclock bailout shots--in other words, having an elite defense, regardless of style, should at least slightly increase the percentage of shots that come from 3 after the offense breaks down. That assumption may be completely wrong, though. Would be interesting to look at when and where shots come in the shot clock and incorporate that into the data here.

Agreed, but the volume would…

Agreed, but the volume would go down considerably. (I'm speaking from some experience, as my partner works for USCIS). Immigration fraud rises and falls quite a bit in pretty predictable ways when immigration policies change, particularly in relation to asylum cases (marriage fraud, on the other hand, remains somewhat more constant, which always makes me think of Parks and Rec).

1) it's stupid that being…

1) it's stupid that being gay used to disqualify you for military service

2) the draft itself, and the deferment process, were all awful and heavily advantaged rich white folks at the expense of the poor and minorities

3) all that said, there has to be some process other than saying "I'm gay"--otherwise, everyone would do it. (yes, I know it's more complicated than that, but the point stands).

Basically, the deferment system was broken, so there had to be some way to "confirm" that someone was gay--no idea why doctors were decided to be the ones who get to decide. And if the system hadn't been broken in the first place, nobody would have had to worry about it and create the verification system that led to this (although I'm sure Anderson would have continued being a POS in other contexts).

A very similar situation is true today with immigration. There are a ton of asylum cases with folks from other countries claiming to have been persecuted in their home countries because they were gay, both truthfully and not. Immigration officials have to try to figure out whether they are actually gay or just trying to defraud the system. If our immigration system actually worked, nobody would be falsely claiming to be gay in the first place. But since it's horrendously broken (there's a very good Last Week Tonight on the issue, if you're interested), people try to game it in all sorts of ways, which makes the government just make it even more broken to try to prevent that.

Who thinks he has NBA…

Who thinks he has NBA potential now?

Don't get me wrong, he's played great the last couple of months and I'm extremely grateful he's put the work in and come on strong. But he's currently a shorter, very poor man's Isaac Haas--nice moves around the basket but nothing else that an NBA team would be particularly interested in.

The problem is that the SOS…

The problem is that the SOS metric they use is RPI—which makes no sense. And we have a surprisingly low RPI SOS (like in the 50s I think) even though we’re top 15 or so in all of the good metrics.

He had a really nice tip-out OR straight to Simpson—guess I don’t know who should get credit there.

"Since 2/1"--meaning over…

"Since 2/1"--meaning over the course of two games? Both of which they lost, to teams that we've beaten?

Must not have mattered too much to Spoelstra since Robinson also played more minutes than anyone else on the Heat.

I think this misses the…

I think this misses the point. Yes, the euphemism treadmill is a thing--language changes and words may mean one thing at one point in history and a different thing at another.

But we're at THIS point in time, and the word "retard" is undeniably offensive right now because it is used in offensive ways. It doesn't matter whether you personally don't find it offensive--it matters whether it is actually causing emotional harm to those who would be affected by its use (like, for instance, the poster you are responding to, with an intellectually disabled child). If s/he thinks it's harmful, s/he's got a much better perspective than an outside observer.

The link you quoted…

The link you quoted literally says that your usage of that word is offensive. You don't get to use an "it's in the dictionary!" defense if the dictionary is telling you not to say it.

Come for the football analysis, stay for the Firefly references.

Went down in quarters but…

Went down in quarters but punched above their weight class. Came into nationals ranked 14th in the country and finished the tournament tied for 5th.

Any chance Patrick Beilein…

Any chance Patrick Beilein might be looked at as an assistant? He's got head coaching experience, can run a pretty good offense...

Jalen Wilson and Cole Bajema…

Jalen Wilson and Cole Bajema. Wilson is a top 60 type--slightly limited athleticism but an excellent shooter and great body control (at 6'7"-6'8", so not sure the athleticism makes too much of a difference). Bajema reminds me a lot of Caris--very lanky, underrated dribbling ability. Not quite as springy but a bit taller, so maybe they cancel. Needs a lot of development but could have the Caris trajectory if so. Probably a better shooter at his age.

Midlands is awesome, but it…

Midlands is awesome, but it has a weirdly low capacity restriction so it'll look like it's not particularly full but have a line. I think it's because it's only fire-rated for its indoor space even though it's about 50/50 indoor/outdoor.

D'Vines (liquor store) in…

D'Vines (liquor store) in Columbia Heights has it--I'll check it out when I head home today, but usually there's a whole wall of Oberon cases immediately upon its release for the summer. I feel like I've seen some Atwater there before, too. Lots of good Michigan beer (and non-Michigan beer, to boot!).

Edit: and I would bet that Midlands and Ivy & Coney (which are owned by the old Kangaroo Boxing Club/Good Silver crew) will have Oberon on tap.

Actually only mentions DL in…

Actually only mentions DL in the article--both 3-tech (acknowledges he's small for it) and end. (Plus FB, RB, TE).

Yes--Rivals and ESPN didn't…

Yes--Rivals and ESPN didn't give him numerical rankings, though, which would have figured into the 247 composite (and for ESPN's BPI, no numerical ranking for a recruit by ESPN would presumably mean he's not counted).

We had a pretty highly…

We had a pretty highly ranked recruiting class--but the best player in the class (Iggy) was not ranked because of Canada (despite Rivals, etc saying that he'd be a five-star if they actually ranked him). So (in addition to the reasons you gave) we're actively underrated by any numerical ranking system because of a blind spot.

I went, and it was awesome…

I went, and it was awesome. I had no idea it would blow up on youtube so much at the time, so I'm really grateful I got to go. A pal of mine was in it and has now been on Broadway a few times--kind of amazing how many careers it kicked off.

He gets what's basically a…

He gets what's basically a run grade and then a "protection" grade. So both.

Positive news like "oh there…

Positive news like "oh there are a bunch of four stars visiting this weekend"?

I wish downvotes actually affected point totals in 3.0, just so you drop below the amount required to be able to create new topics.

I actually like the comment…

I actually like the comment sorting the way it is, but I have no objection (obviously) to having more options.

Totally agree on being able to click yourself.

I'd like to see everything…

I'd like to see everything get smaller. It feels like the extraneous data (on board posts in particular) is taking up a ton of space, to the detriment of being able to read threads without scrolling down a bunch. (Text smaller would be great too, although maybe I can do that myself? Computers, man).

I'm curious--what didn't you…

I'm curious--what didn't you like about Broken Earth? I thought the wordbuilding was top-notch and the characters were super interesting (particularly in the first book).

I agree with the above review of the Three-Body Problem--interesting ideas but the character work was lacking for my taste.

I'll always recommend the Gone Away World by Nick Harkaway. Simultaneously hilarious and thrilling.

If I'm Shea

I'm licking my lips. QBs will go high no matter the quality--if he has even a decent season, he's a high first rounder.

Would be lovely to see him stay, but I'd rather he set the field on fire and roll out after a B10 championship.

Komodo Island/Labuan Bajo in Indonesia

Looks like I’m going to be streaming off a new SIM card unless anyone has any clever ideas.

I actually totally agree

We were all gaga over Bamba, but I think he would have been third string at best. Rim protection is elite but we need a center who is at least functional on offense (especially at setting screens, which Bamba is terrible at) in order to make everything work.

They should be able to do that

If the NCAA and your school fucks up this bad, you should be able to use this like free agency. I support it.

I mean

I mean, the real problem is the inefficiency, not the friend-blowing, right? Blow your friend, don't blow your friend--doesn't matter to me. But don't blow your friend AND hire hookers, that's a waste of either money or saliva. Plus the hookers are probably better at it, so your friend would like it more.

Hookers AND

Hookers AND blow your friend? Isn't that what the hookers are for?

Nope

My identity remains a secret. (Except to other blog readers who already know who I am, I guess).

Cool story bro

My picture still shows up on the first page of google images from College Gameday ten years ago (vs OSU) if you search for "michigan fans."

Relevant because--you could be immortalized forever! Just go to the MGoBlog tailgate!

Andy Kryza

One of the writers went to MSU. So #2? But I like #3.

Problem: defense

Mo has a hard enough time staying in front of big 5s, he would have a REALLY hard time with 4s. Wilson was good enough at defense that he could guard both, but Mo (while an offensive savant) is definitely not. He's wily but not that quick side to side.

Ha - yes

That counts as part of the "being a dick" reason in my book, when you have a person's life in your hands. (and I work in politics, so I think I've got a decent perspective on it, unfortunately).

Two possibilities

1. He's pretty confident in his case.

2. The prosecuter is not offering a plea deal that is realistically any better for him than a guilty verdict would be (either because the prosecutor thinks his/her case is pretty strong, or because s/he is being a dick, which is not unlikely, unfortunately).

Agreed

Although I think putting Tyson and Locke together is misleading. While Tyson is probably primarily a shooter, I think he's definitely flashed the ability to drive and finish at the rim. (Helps that he's 6'7"ish too). I think Tyson (while a project) has the potential to be able to be a pretty good ballhandler and driver.

Yeah

But IU also has a lot more historic success than Michigan. Plus, we literally just lost two assistant coaches, including one of those who was our main recruiter in the region.

There's a difference

I'm obviously not claiming Beilein is the best recruiter in the world, or even that if Michigan had another coach we might not get in on some guys we can't now. But there is a theme on this site in particular (umhoops forum is much more realistic, IMO) that he's absolutely terrible at it.

Michigan IS NOT a blue blood basketball program that recruits want to come to because of its long-time success. The last 5-6 years have been great, and maybe that'll pay off in the long run (especially with the record of putting kids in the NBA), but Beilein has much less of a recruiting advantage than I think people assume.

I think MGoBlog is too used to the recruiting success of our football team, which is a totally different story. If Brady Hoke could get top ten classes, you know that recruiting comes down to more than just the coaches. Beilein could be better; but he isn't operating with the advantages everyone assumes.
