META - Feature Enhancement Request

Submitted by poseidon7902 on

The thread about whether you liked old or new forum made me think that a single place to put requests which aren't bug related in one post would be nice.  Make a post and outline a feature you'd like to see.  If you read it and like it, upvote it so the admin's can see the more pressing items that the community would like to see.  If something is posted and there's a workaround or maybe the person didn't see it was already a feature, reply to it outlining where it is etc...  Maybe one of the mods can sticky this as well so it doesn't drop off the top for a while.

I'd like to see an easier way to navigate the board.  This includes putting page numbers at the top of the page as well as the bottom so that if I know a thread is on a different page or a post is on a different page I don't have to scroll all the way to the bottom to get to it.

Bugs aren't the same as features.  Bugs are things which are breaking/not working correctly.  These are low priority desires the community would like.  If Seth wants to have feature requests in the bug thread, that's fine, but figured keeping them separate would be a better organizational setup for the admins to focus on.

  • Sort comments by most upvotes
  • default sort comments to newest (it’s always oldest for me, even when i change it constantly)
  • add which user created each thread on forum page
  • Be able to click on your own account from the front page to see your most recent comments

I'd like to see everything get smaller. It feels like the extraneous data (on board posts in particular) is taking up a ton of space, to the detriment of being able to read threads without scrolling down a bunch. (Text smaller would be great too, although maybe I can do that myself? Computers, man).

I'd like to see the thumbs up/down remain colored in once you've utilized it.  When you thumbs up or down a post and then leave and come back, the icon does not stay colored in which may make you select it again.  So you have to remember which posts you've voted up or down.

Add the names of OP poster to the board, like 2.0, which also had the name of the last poster

Add option to sort the board by most recent post.  Chronological order (sorted by time that OP was created) doesn't allow the popular posts to float to the top of the board.

The weird thing is that I see them on my work desktop, which has a very limited search history of here and maybe weather sites.

It's like Google has data mined my computer and the only info it could find is I am male and the default "male" ads are men's under wear or mail order brides.

I don't really have too many complaints with the site. For an enhancement request, I'd like to see a different design for the comments/replies. It's hard to track who is replying to who. I think it's because of the white space, and not having a super clear delineation/nesting.

Need an App.

mgoblog gets around 1.5M views per month. I have no idea how many users this is, but charging $5/app download seems like $$$ to me.

Abbreviate the time units in the "Last Post" column on the board.

"XX hours XX minutes ago" is too wide to fit in the column, so "ago" is forced into a second row, which adds to the row height on those rows, increases wasted space, and adds to more scrolling down. Seems like overkill to spell out "hours" and "minutes".  Just abbreviate to "hrs" and "mins".  Or you could just format time as "XX:XX" ago", which saves even more space.

You could make the column wider but that's better to be avoided.

Move the avatar pic into the header row, the same row as the user name and post date/time.

In the current layout all of the space below the avatar pic is wasted, adding to scrolling, whitespace, etc.  Not sure why it needs to be in a separate column. If the picture was in the header row, that would be more efficient so that the body of the post message could now utilize the total available width of the column.

This also would reduce or eliminate the need to shrink the avatar pics in a thread that is getting narrower, since the header row heights are constant(?).

Change the banner to something cleaner.

Make the squares/links for the main stories near the top of the main page smaller.

Ads=revenue. I get it. But they appear to dominate the new site.

Move the Message Board closer to the top of the page. Put the diaries in a quieter location.

I know it's a process and I appreciate the work that goes into this site. Keep up the good work.

/thread

Ok I lied, 1 more. The ability to see the thread author on the main page. I don’t understand how this was left off in the first place, but it needs to come back.

A couple decades ago I learned not to buy version X.0 of any software. Always wait for version X.1 that had most of the bugs worked out. There are 2 problems with that. 1) I need to read MGo now and 2) I don’t know if there will ever be an MGo 3.1. Typical of Brian to retreat to the virtual MGoBasement and not communicate with his customers.

"Typical of Brian to retreat to the virtual MGoBasement and not communicate with his customers."

You hit the nail on the head right there.

I understand that it was a big endeavor to get the new site built and migrate the info from the old site. I get that. But the lack of communication and basic customer care has been the biggest disappointment thus far for me. I'm sure Brian and Co. read these threads and the silence from them has been deafening.

A simple user guide for posting pics/gifs/vids/hyperlinks/block quotes, acknowledgement of our questions/issues, some type of submittable form to report said issues and an annoucement of know and work in progress bug fixes would go a long way in providing basic customer satisfaction.

I'd like the ability to sort the mgoboard by the number of replies. (preferably in a time frame like the last week).  This would let me catch up on the big hitting topics.

Make the board preview window on the side of the page longer.  It's about half the length of the one in the previous version of the blog, and it makes it WAY easier to miss new content on a quick look at the page, and a lot highly likelihood of repeated threads.

I would also request/recommend putting something to the left of the comments.  Move the diaries window there and move the board window up would be my vote, but put anything there, I don't even care if it's more ads for some color contrast.  The vast empty white space doesn't look good.

- Auto links so people don’t have to do any wysiwyg but others can still click a URL and have it open without copy/paste

- open links in a new window. Any external links posted by admin or users should automatically open in a new window so I don’t lose my place in a board post or on the front page while reading an Unverified Voracity (or any post). Zero benefit to have external links open in the same page and it’s annoying when I close the window then have to reload mgoblog compeltely, or having it reload when I go back to mgoblog from an external link.

  1. Sort posts on the MGoBoard by most recent comment rather than created date. If you have a very active topic, but then it's two days old, it drops off the front page. The very active topics/posts should be kept at the top.
  2. I second the request to open hyperlinks into new tabs (rather than a new window). It is annoying to have to remember to right-click the link ONLY IN MGOBLOG to open in a new tab. Practically every other site I use does this.
  3. Everything at the top of the page is too big. Between the ad space, MGoBlog header, and those front page story boxes, that's an entire screen worth of real estate, with more than half of it not really adding any value. I get that the ads won't change, but the banner could definitely be smaller, as could the story boxes. Reduce the height of those by 25-35% - although maybe all we'd add to the screen is the next ad above the most recent front-page post. Maybe the banner height is also a function of the user control panel box?
  4. Speaking of which, the user CP box is pretty useless. I can't actually see anything about myself other than points. Why is the only way to see my info to find a post I've made and then click on my username? I should be able to do it from the user CP box.
