With 3 run lead and 3 outs to go...

Submitted by Yo_Blue on June 3rd, 2019 at 12:48 AM

...Michigan's relievers piss away a win.  Michigan still bats in the bottom of the ninth, but the bullpen has given up 7 runs so far.  So far, 6 walks, double, single, and a heartbreaking inning.

We will have to beat Creighton tomorrow to advance assuming we can't get four runs back.

It's 11-7, Creighton.  Sigh...

I don’t have points to creat a post so I’ll put this here...

As I thought, he’s going with walker cleveland tonight.  True freshman, Slow big breaking slider, pitches to contact.  I’d have to imagine Isaiah Paige will be the first out of the pen.

As for the offense.  Bakich is shaking up the lineup and playing the hot bats.  Gutsy move but the right one IMO.  Benching two seniors who have played crucial roles for 4 years including over 400 career games combined!

I should be used to Michigan team sports losing in the most ridiculous ways ever, but damn. That was fucking rough.

Poor Henry. Probably could've pitched out the 8th inning honestly. Idk what Bakich was thinking.

Complete meltdown.

So was there a single Michigan team this year who didn't get dong punched at some point? I'm sure our ultimate frisbee team probably put together a good season

Final score: Creighton 11 - Michigan 7

Total collapse by the bullpen.

On the bright side, Creighton threw their closer for three innings tonight.  We hit their starter pretty well.  Our starters have been extremely solid over the past three games.

Let's get it done Monday.  Game time TBD.  Go Blue!

Pretty tough to watch. I mean they can clearly beat this team tomorrow but that one is hard to swallow. Everyone else does what they need to do and one position group blows it. Could not throw a strike. None of them.

It is baseball.....momentum means very little. If you are saying they needed to win because you don;t think they can get another good start tomorrow, maybe. But your take is uninformed if you think emotion will win the game for Creighton tomorrow. As for this being an athletic department wide problem, another lame take. What are you saying the problem even is ? Sounds like this is somehow tied to football losing to OSU ? And I just don't see a connection between losing to OSU, and having a shitty bullpen.

Baseball is wonderful that way. In fact, the ways it operates in total contraposition from other sports (starting with the way much of the game takes place in everyone's head) are fascinating as hell. You no longer see guys with paunches making the most money, but it hasn't changed that much.

nailed it.

"momentum?  momentum is tomorrow's starting pitcher."

- earl weaver

emotion is overrated, too - the creighton bench looked done after kerr's second hr...all it takes is a random hbp and a walk, and your emotions are right back on track.

Some fans never get the fact that at the end of the day it's just one player, one team out of the many thousands, that's kicking you in the crown jewels. Especially hard with college sports where, let's face it, things are even less far than they are in pro sports.

I am beginning to believe that Ty Butterfield is one of those people that gets a splinter, becomes convinced that it is cancer, and then cuts off his own hand to prevent further spread of the splinter before showing up at an ER demanding numerous rounds of treatment all the same.

I took the fam to the game.  Heartbreaking ending, but fun experience for the kids.  They got lucky and snagged two fouls balls.

Hope the boys can pull it out tomorrow.  Go Blue!

Yea I’m not on the fire Bakich bandwagon, but damn that was completely on the coaching staff and not on the players at all. Every reliever was left in at least a batter too long. Didn’t seem like any pitcher came in pumping strikes and the coach was okay letting them try and work that out in the biggest game of the year. As a baseball coach when you bring a reliever in the next guy up needs to be hot ASAP. Can’t come in and throw four balls and walk a guy. But worse than that, you can’t leave a guy in who does that. Head scratching calls late in the game...

What do you mean that was not on the players?  Not one of the relievers could find the strike zone.  And the few times they did they laid the ball on a platter.  The only coach I'd question is the pitching coach.  Every one of the relief pitchers took an ungodly amount of time to get ready to throw a pitch and I think that just built up the pressure and indecision in their minds.

I HAD to go to bed in top of 9th, no outs, bases loaded, up 3 with our third relief pitcher in of the night.

Wow, this one hurts.  I haven't been following the team that closely all year, was this a bad night or is the drop off from our starters and our bullpen really that dramatic?

Team needs to put this one behind them, I hope they can.

Relief pitchers blow a 7-3 lead in the 8th, give up 8 runs... 7-11.

SO MUCH FOR RESTING THE PULL-PEN!!!

The bullpen is very erratic, certainly the weakness of the team (and I’m not just saying that because last night happened).  Pitchers with good stuff that can’t control it.  Most of them average 4-6 walks per 9, pressure got to them last night.  Hopefully they got it out of their system because they’re only getting 4-6 from the starter tonight (likely walker Cleveland).  I suspect it’s going to take 10 runs to win tonight for either team.

What is troubling is this team had the potential to win the B1G and the Big Ten tournament and seems to have trouble finishing.  Let's hope today things turn out differently, but it was terribly disappointing to watch that 9th inning.  We had so many opportunities to blow this game open and never took advantage...lots of players were left on base.

What the fucking fuck?  It was 6-2 in the bottom of the 7th, with Henry cruising, when I called it quits and headed to bed.  Waking up to this sucks ass.

Yes the bullpen struggled to get outs and throw strikes. Today is a new day however. Let’s hope that our pitching can shake it off and come out strong. Give Creighton credit. They battled and they made us throw strikes. We really didn’t take enough advantage offensively. Left too many guys on base. I expect a battle tonight. Should be fun to watch!
