With 3 run lead and 3 outs to go...
...Michigan's relievers piss away a win. Michigan still bats in the bottom of the ninth, but the bullpen has given up 7 runs so far. So far, 6 walks, double, single, and a heartbreaking inning.
We will have to beat Creighton tomorrow to advance assuming we can't get four runs back.
It's 11-7, Creighton. Sigh...
It happens. It's college baseball and if you can get into the bullpen and past the main reliever then it's showtime.
“It happens” is precisely the issue. Losing in embarrassing fashion is the “happens” that frustrates. Ready for that to be rare - not checked off in each sport.
oh, hey, welcome back!
Gotta give it to ol ______zen here, "it" seems to happen alot across all teams. :(
It happens applies when you give up a bunch of base hits and or errors. That doesn't apply when you have 6 walks.
I don’t have points to creat a post so I’ll put this here...
As I thought, he’s going with walker cleveland tonight. True freshman, Slow big breaking slider, pitches to contact. I’d have to imagine Isaiah Paige will be the first out of the pen.
As for the offense. Bakich is shaking up the lineup and playing the hot bats. Gutsy move but the right one IMO. Benching two seniors who have played crucial roles for 4 years including over 400 career games combined!

I should be used to Michigan team sports losing in the most ridiculous ways ever, but damn. That was fucking rough.
Poor Henry. Probably could've pitched out the 8th inning honestly. Idk what Bakich was thinking.
Complete meltdown.
So was there a single Michigan team this year who didn't get dong punched at some point? I'm sure our ultimate frisbee team probably put together a good season
Every team gets dong punched but 1 in any NCAA sport that crowns a single champion.
Died in the quarterfinals I believe:

Went down in quarters but punched above their weight class. Came into nationals ranked 14th in the country and finished the tournament tied for 5th.
Did the softball team get dong punched?
So hard that they don't have dongs anymore.
That one's going to be tough to put behind. Hope they can clear their psyche's.
Final score: Creighton 11 - Michigan 7
Total collapse by the bullpen.
On the bright side, Creighton threw their closer for three innings tonight. We hit their starter pretty well. Our starters have been extremely solid over the past three games.
Let's get it done Monday. Game time TBD. Go Blue!
Pretty tough to watch. I mean they can clearly beat this team tomorrow but that one is hard to swallow. Everyone else does what they need to do and one position group blows it. Could not throw a strike. None of them.
Tough break but this team will bounce back.
Mods, please ban this whiny, little bitch.
It is baseball.....momentum means very little. If you are saying they needed to win because you don;t think they can get another good start tomorrow, maybe. But your take is uninformed if you think emotion will win the game for Creighton tomorrow. As for this being an athletic department wide problem, another lame take. What are you saying the problem even is ? Sounds like this is somehow tied to football losing to OSU ? And I just don't see a connection between losing to OSU, and having a shitty bullpen.
Sports. Something is tied to another thing and is done to help our fickle human minds comprehend things. Even though it's usually bullshit or old cliches equally made of bullshit.
Baseball is wonderful that way. In fact, the ways it operates in total contraposition from other sports (starting with the way much of the game takes place in everyone's head) are fascinating as hell. You no longer see guys with paunches making the most money, but it hasn't changed that much.
nailed it.
"momentum? momentum is tomorrow's starting pitcher."
- earl weaver
emotion is overrated, too - the creighton bench looked done after kerr's second hr...all it takes is a random hbp and a walk, and your emotions are right back on track.
Yup. Momentum is your next days starter. Its shitty that a lot of their runs came via their batters just standing there and not swinging but they did have a couple big hits too.
Momentum is not a thing unless we’re talking mass times velocity.

Sounds like the common denominator for bad things happening to Michigan sports teams is your fandom. You should stop rooting for M so that good things can finally happen.
Some fans never get the fact that at the end of the day it's just one player, one team out of the many thousands, that's kicking you in the crown jewels. Especially hard with college sports where, let's face it, things are even less far than they are in pro sports.
I am beginning to believe that Ty Butterfield is one of those people that gets a splinter, becomes convinced that it is cancer, and then cuts off his own hand to prevent further spread of the splinter before showing up at an ER demanding numerous rounds of treatment all the same.
So we should hope he gets splinters in his fingertips and tongue? That would do the trick! LOL
Ty Butterfield is a problem across the entire site.

"Momentum is the next day's starting pitcher."

I took the fam to the game. Heartbreaking ending, but fun experience for the kids. They got lucky and snagged two fouls balls.
Hope the boys can pull it out tomorrow. Go Blue!
Fire Bakich. Tonight was prime example.
That meme is getting old. Time to think of something new.
Game 2 tonight (Monday) 7pm eastern on ESPN2.

Yea I’m not on the fire Bakich bandwagon, but damn that was completely on the coaching staff and not on the players at all. Every reliever was left in at least a batter too long. Didn’t seem like any pitcher came in pumping strikes and the coach was okay letting them try and work that out in the biggest game of the year. As a baseball coach when you bring a reliever in the next guy up needs to be hot ASAP. Can’t come in and throw four balls and walk a guy. But worse than that, you can’t leave a guy in who does that. Head scratching calls late in the game...
What do you mean that was not on the players? Not one of the relievers could find the strike zone. And the few times they did they laid the ball on a platter. The only coach I'd question is the pitching coach. Every one of the relief pitchers took an ungodly amount of time to get ready to throw a pitch and I think that just built up the pressure and indecision in their minds.
I HAD to go to bed in top of 9th, no outs, bases loaded, up 3 with our third relief pitcher in of the night.
Wow, this one hurts. I haven't been following the team that closely all year, was this a bad night or is the drop off from our starters and our bullpen really that dramatic?
Team needs to put this one behind them, I hope they can.
Relief pitchers blow a 7-3 lead in the 8th, give up 8 runs... 7-11.
SO MUCH FOR RESTING THE PULL-PEN!!!
The bullpen is very erratic, certainly the weakness of the team (and I’m not just saying that because last night happened). Pitchers with good stuff that can’t control it. Most of them average 4-6 walks per 9, pressure got to them last night. Hopefully they got it out of their system because they’re only getting 4-6 from the starter tonight (likely walker Cleveland). I suspect it’s going to take 10 runs to win tonight for either team.
What is troubling is this team had the potential to win the B1G and the Big Ten tournament and seems to have trouble finishing. Let's hope today things turn out differently, but it was terribly disappointing to watch that 9th inning. We had so many opportunities to blow this game open and never took advantage...lots of players were left on base.
What the fucking fuck? It was 6-2 in the bottom of the 7th, with Henry cruising, when I called it quits and headed to bed. Waking up to this sucks ass.
i swear brad asmus was managing last night.
Did our manager also then get pissy with the media last night after the game? If so, Brad Ausmas was managing.
Yes the bullpen struggled to get outs and throw strikes. Today is a new day however. Let’s hope that our pitching can shake it off and come out strong. Give Creighton credit. They battled and they made us throw strikes. We really didn’t take enough advantage offensively. Left too many guys on base. I expect a battle tonight. Should be fun to watch!
Rough ending, but was really nice to see Brewer out there playing hard. He doesnt look 100%, but he was bouncing around.
Certainly disappointing. Not to be unexpected at this point.
