What happens if nebraska decides to play football this year without the B1g?

Scott frost has commented on the possibility previously ( as documented in another board post), but what does the b1g do with nebraska if they choose to play football with another conference this year?

I grew up as a child of the 90s and i always loved michigan, but nebraska football was something that i always loved to watch. Option football, tommie frazier, fast defenses. Even into the days of eric crouch tearing up nd in a stadium that was at least half red, nebraska until they fired solich was pure bliss on a gridiron.

As such i was excited when they joined the b1g. But it does not seem that they have added much of value.  Its pretty much a mediocre school with a large football following in the stadium, and a few solid non revenue sports.

Is the b1g better off cutting nebraska loose if they play in another conference this year? Does the b1g replace them if we do kick them out?

My call is yes, give them the boot. They are more of a big12 school any day.

Kick the tires on nd, even with the nbc contract.

Take a shot at texas and oklahoma, even with the longhorn network.

Worst case, cut the divisions and run as a 13 team league. Ncaa has already let the big 12 have their top 2 teams have a championship game with no divisions.

They don't belong in the B1G.  They are ranked in the 160's academically.  Every other school is in the top 90.  They are an academic and cultural outlier.  For all the bitching about Rutger and Maryland geography and competitively lacking - they fit the league's academic norms.

Putin is correct.

XM is a great guy and one of the best MGoPosters, but like many others who seldom or never post anymore, he's fed up with the misbehavior all over the MGoBoard lately.

Politics is a decisive and hateful thing, and we'd all be better for it if we'd leave it at the door when we log in here.

Sure, why not. I did enjoy their rivalries with Wiscy, Iowa, and Minnesota though.

No. Fuck ND.

No. Texas is too much drama. Oklahoma won't come without Okie St and Texas.

Worst case is they stop at 13. Rutgers and Maryland need to gtfo. I'm fine either way with Nebraska, but those 2 were quite possibly the most terrible additions that ever could've happened.

Maryland isn't a great fit football wise but they are arguably one of the best overall athletic departments in the conference.  Since joining the big ten men's basketball won the big ten regular season in 2020, made 3 ncaa tourneys and have a sweet 16 appearance.  Men's baseball has made 3 ncaa tourney's and made the super regional once.  Men's soccer won the NCAA title in 2018 and makes the ncaa's pretty much every year and they've won multiple big ten titles.  Maryland's women's basketball team has made the Final Four, a couple other sweet 16 appearances and 9 big ten titles combined between the regular season and conference tourney.  Field Hockey has two NCAA runner up finishes and wins either the big ten regular season or conference tourney just about every year.  Maryland's women's lacrosse team has won 3 NCAA titles, been runner up another time and dominates the big ten regular season and conference tournament.  Men's lacrosse has an NCAA title and pretty much makes the Final Four every year.

Nebraska wants an excuse to leave since it’s an also-ran in the B10. They ought to be playing Iowa State in some dust bowl in the middle of nowhere.

I mean, the Big 12 didn't want them and the Big 10 isn't crazy about them either.  I guess they could try being independent and going 9-3 each season and see how that feels.

All I can say is that we're beginning to run short on teams that Scott Frost can later claim he has in fact outhit.

I will never understand why Nebraska dumped a very fine Big XII tradition for a conference like ours where they are a terrible fit.

I guess the obvious answer is $$$ but I’ve never been able to figure it out either. My pet theory is they perceived the BIG (at the time they joined) as a weaker football conference and hence they were more likely to reclaim their football glory there. I’m not sure they thought about the sacrifice of having Texas be a relevant recruiting state for them (they’ll never make in-roads to Pennsylvania or Ohio) and the possibility PSU, MSU, Michigan and Minnesota would all take very large steps forward after they joined. I award them zero sympathy points.

I think the obvious answer is the answer here--money. There was also a power struggle with Texas that Nebraska continually lost from the beginnings of the Big XII (like accepting Prop 48 players, etc.). I think NU knew the Big 10 wasn't going to give them the power they probably had in the old Big 8, but I'm sure they were tired of Texas calling the shots as well. They may have also thought the Big XII wouldn't be around by 2020 if Texas and a few friends took their ball out west.

I think part of it, just like PSU back in '90 was misplaced institutional arrogance.

They thought (from a football perspective) that they'd open up the great lakes region for recruits. In fact, the opposite is true (not that there were a lot of Neb players but I think Texas players are the ones who said, why go to the B10 when I could play in the B12/SEC at home?)

IIRC it was mostly because of jealously towards Texas & their toady Oklahoma at the time. With the TV deal (LHN) and location of the B12 Championship game (Cowboy Stadium at the time) it was obvious favoritism was running rampant and it was time to move on. The B12 pretty much treated them like a red hea...nvm. I believe that was the gist of it though.

This would be discussed at a high level before Nebraska scheduled any games.

Nebraska won't leave the Big Ten just to possibly play some games this Fall. The Big Ten controls their media rights. They would have a hard time collecting any TV money, so there is very little to be gained. They stand to lose money, a lot of money, by leaving. Athletics wouldn't be the largest loser.

The Big Ten could agree to part ways with Nebraska. I very much doubt they would agree to let them play on their own and stay in the conference. Nebraska needs allies, at least 2-3 other Big Ten schools willing to do the same thing.

Folks act like they’d be cheating on the conference.
The B1G & PAC 12 have put themselves in a very vulnerable spot.
Conferences like the SEC and ACC could really start using this as a catalyst for moving towards super conferences.
