TomVH: WR Devin Lucien Schedules Visit

Four star wide receiver Devin Lucien (6'1", 189 lbs.) just scheduled his official visit to Michigan today. He will be in town for the weekend of January 7th. Lucien is the 28th ranked receiver in the country according to Rivals. Here's his junior film. He was excited, and asked that I send him the link to this post, so he and his mom can see what the fans say. I'll have a full interview with him later, too.

This kid..

has some of the best body control and aggressive technique with respect to jump balls that I have seen in a while.. The first few highlights look exactly like Denard to Hemingway..

Runs good routes, looks like he has that extra gear too... would love to see this kid in Wings

Wings

Oddly enough, this is the helmet on Devin's MaxPreps page...

butMascot photo for Crespi high school Football team.

not what Crespi's wearing in the videos...

Nevertheless, the wings will be waiting for him in the original color scheme, should he choose to accept them.  And, "Devin to Devin, who makes great catch, twists past a defender and gets lucien down the sideline" jokes aside, would be great to see him wearing the maize & blue.

I was thinking the same thing about the Hemingway

comparison; Devin definitely has good hands. I also like the way he gets to running North/South quick when he gets his hands on the ball.

I bet he feels like a monster

I love how he swats of the defender with a stiff arm and hardly misses a step. It would be awesome to have a talent like him in this class.

Made some really nice catches in a few of those highlights. I think he would love AA.

Landing another top notch WR

Is a priority for this class.  Did you see how many HUGE plays our WRs had this year?  We would've lost a couple more games if it weren't for Roundtree, Hemingway and Stonum having huge games against Illinois, Indiana and UMass respectively.

We lose our 3 top wideouts

We lose our 3 top outside WR's after next season (and maybe Roundtree if he leaves early).

Another outside WR is an absolute must.

Agree with everything you said

Just wanted to add to the "strong in the air." Kid has great control of his body in the air, would kill the deep jump ball we see in our offense.

Lucien

Looks like he could be a lot like Hemingway was this year.  Physical, great hands, and very shifty.  He's got enough talent to see some time as a true frosh and has some great receivers above him that can show him the ropes.

Definitely

a good opportunity for a WR to come to Michigan. Conway is the only other WR commit, and Odoms, Hemingway, and Stonum will be gone after next year.

Looks like Roundtree may have some competition for that #1 jersey eventually. Good hands, which is extremely important in this quick offense. (Crosses fingers)

Love it when a guy goes up

Love it when a guy goes up and attacks the ball instead of letting it come to him. He doesn't shy away from contact either. None of that "oops, guy's coming, better tip-toe out of bounds" stuff going on.

Height is 6'1 and he plays

Height is 6'1 and he plays like he is 6'6. Does a real nice job of going up and catching the ball at it's highest point. Him and Conway on the outside would be scary in this offense.

Reminds me of Manningham

Good speed, good hands, good route-running. And a serious deep ball threat.

I would say that's a good thing

Manningham never seemed to be a great route runner and it seems to have dogged him at the next level.  This kid looks he's coming in with an amazing skill set.  He seems to have the skill set to be at least an all conference wide receiver.

snag!

his snag right around 40 seconds was impressive, he plucks the ball out of the air over two defenders. attacking the ball at it's highest point is somthing that can be overlooked, but this guy has natural ball skills. he would be a great addition to Michigan, GO BLUE!!

Wow

Great highlights. I especially like his adjustment skills around 2'25" to go to the ball when it's not where it's expected to be. Looks to be a very physical wideout who doesn't shy away from contact, almost like a TE...except TEs don't usually catch 75 yard bombs (insert joke about secondary during ND game here).

personally what was great to see

personally what was great to see, was how he "go gets it" when the ball is in the air! Not afraid to cross the middle to catch the ball, with of course his hands.  Seems to have that extra gear, and a great ability to punish defenders with stiff arms.  Love to see Devin wearing the winged helmet.

exactly

As much as the safeties like to creep down against our running game, we need kids like this who excel at making those jump-ball type catches, and this guy has the knack for it. Also looks like a physical player who will be a capable downfield blocker. Hope he goes blue, obviously.

If that is his Jr. year, I'd like to see his Sr. year highlights.  Remember Devin, our helmets have wings!

Nice long strides. Can't wait for the Denard to Devin, Tate to Devin and of course, Devin to Devin with a little Dee to Devin flea flicker thrown in.

The Junior Hemingway

The Junior Hemingway comparison is apt.  He reminds me a little bit of Marquise Walker, too.  Good sized kid, runs really good routes, goes up and high points the ball.

I was thinking Marquise as well

Appears to be very physical with dbs and he makes a lot of box-out type body positioning plays where he shields the defender with his back. Looks like he's played some hoops.

This is his Junior film?

This kid looks pretty dam polished for it being juior film. #27 wr? I dont think there are 10 wr's out there with better film then that. He is so big and strong, and he is always catching deep balls at the hghest point in his jumps. He is just a bully  carrying the ball. Would love to see him in a Michigan uniform next fall. This guy is gonna be a terror if he puts the work in. Devin, you might be excited for the offer, but alot of people here would be more excited if you accepted it. Best of luck to you either way..Go Blue!

He does a really good job of

He does a really good job of adjusting to deep throws.  With a couple of years under RR, this kid might be our best vertical threat.  We need this type of receiver on our team.  Although we have good receivers, we don't really have an excellent vertical threat receiver.  We haven't had one since Manningham And Braylon.

I agree with an earlier poster, there's no way there are 27 receivers with better film.  Reminds me of Calvin Johnson with that stiff arm and leaping ability.  Awesome name too.

According to ESPN, there are 155 receivers with better films. Hopefully Rivals is right on this one.

A little disappointing.

I mean, he looks like a really great football player, but...

I thought his highlight reel needed more Josh Groban.

Go Blue, Devin!

Plus, there's the eventual Devin Gardner to Devin Lucien combo which will be fun.

Timing

In addition to having great body control, kid looks like he has great timing too. Not only does he high point the ball, he manages to adjust his body and speed extremely well. Combined with his speed, that's a killer combo.

I like it a lot

Devin would be a great addition to this class -- a kid with a good head on his shoulders and great physical capabilities.  He'd have a wonderful opportunity to be worked in to the starting lineup not too long after getting on campus, but before that, he'd have the opportunity to learn from our current WRs who have been in the system for a few years now.

All in all, whichever school he picks will be lucky to get him.  Hope it's us -- we'll definitely show him the most love at least.   How many other schools' fans watch recruit highlight films regularly on this big of a scale and are as knowledgeable about the recruiting landscape as us?!  Devin G to Devin L all day!

Great News!

Lemme see...great speed, excellent hands, goes up and gets the ball, owns the cornerback, not afraid of the safety over the middle, and, uh, and, uh, oh yeah, WOW WHAT A STIFF ARM!!  How many people did he put on the ground with that thing?  What's not to like? He'd be a great addition, come on Devin, Go Blue!!  Thanks Tom as always, great work!!

Talk about a divergence in recruiting rankings: Lucien is the 61st best wideout according to Scout and the 156th best wideout according to ESPN.

Reminds me of

Stonum. I love how he catches the ball with his hands, and he's got great speed too.  I'm suprised to see that he isn't one of the top 10 recievers. But Junior and Roy both were ranked outside of the top 30 recievers according to rivals, and look at them now.

nicest part is

he is such a natural and well-rounded receiver that he could excel in any system or scheme, under any coach, so he isn't likely to be worried about that.

save yourself time

save yourself time, check out the video at 35 seconds.  That's all you need to know....

Bring this boy here and let Denard throw it up!  This kid has several highlights where he catches the ball at the top of his jump - great timing - and when he grabs the ball, he grabs it tight.  WR's like this are gold with Denard running the offense b/c the CB are often 1 on 1 with our WR's.
