Swenson decommit: more info ...
OK, don't shoot the messenger ... just 1-side of the story and just reporting ... doesn't look great tho
“Coach Drevno just said they’re trying to put the best recruiting class they can together,” Molinari said. “They’ve gained a ton of interest from a lot of recruits they never thought they’d have interest from. It wasn’t just a coach Drevno thing. They sat down and thought there wasn’t going to be one for Erik at this point — not a full scholarship, a preferred walk-on.”

Exactly. Yep. Hey we ripped some kid off but other kids get ripped off in big time college footbaw herr herr herr meat head thing about Alabama, it's totally ok because he gets to scramble to desperately try to salvage things.
January 20th, 2016 at 9:51 PM ^
Agreed. Let me know if: We over sign and force a kid out w/no options or cheat.

Those are pretty low standards for honorable behavior that you have set for yourself.
January 21st, 2016 at 12:26 AM ^
Not really. Seems you've set a fairly low standard for the amount of information necessary to draw a conclusion. Best I can tell that number is somewhere below 50% of the relvant information. Now, off that high horse.

OK, so if your kids get accepted to a nice school, but get their spot pulled 3 weeks before school starts because they found smarter kids, don't complain.

I'm also not pleased that it took this long to tell him that he didn't earn the offer.
I'm not inclined to believe the staff dumped him because other guys started showing interest.

Drevno said they were dumping him because other guys were showing interest.

Do you have a direct quote from Drevno or are you relating hearsay? Here's the thing, if you have a direct quote from Drevno that is an NCAA violation. If all you have is hearsay that's a violation of credibility.
January 21st, 2016 at 2:45 AM ^
A careful reading shows that the Drevno quote does not mention Swenson's situation specifically, so if the quote is complete and accurate, it is not an NCAA violation.
January 21st, 2016 at 9:46 AM ^
There's no way to know if the quote is accurate and it's pretty clear it's not complete--I'm guessing Drevno's conversation with Molinari was a lot longer than that one sentence.
But where's the violation anyway? Drevno's not allowed to discuss Swenson's situation with Swenson's coach? That makes no sense.

It's a contract, you get a scholarship two years in advance you better progress and get better, if not you're likely to play for a lower level program. It's a very competitive environement where you have to do well or get cut. I got cut from my freshman baseball team, a bummer, but I wasn't good enough.

Reason 1. Ethics. What others do shouldn't dictate what you do.
Reason 2. Timing. The kid clearly thought he still had a spot as of Jan. 3rd.
Reason 3. In the real world or when applying to college, it is very rare for the employer/university to rescind an offer. While not considered "the right thing to do" it is much more common for a potential candidate to accept an offer and then move on. The reason is because, for the individual, nothing is lost, they get a better deal. If an employer were to say, actually we found someone else, that looks terrible and can affect company perception. So if for no other reason, you should care that other recruits will see this and wonder what a Michigan scholarship offer is worth.

That is true. It is not like the kid is severely damaged by this as he has options to elite colleges with a full ride.
We don't know all of the info - were grades part of the issue, etc...?
However, this still looks bad, to pull an offer this late in the game, especially with a kid who stuck by the school during the dark period of Hoke's firing.
January 21st, 2016 at 8:44 AM ^
Speculating that grades might be an issue, yet we know northwestern has interest in him :/

If he was sent his financial aid paperwork then maybe that would be different.

I am sure he has all the facts 100 percent correct. Was there any stretching?
Edit - Hi Mark! No, we haven't forgotten.

Wait... how did this turn into a discussion about the Flint water crisis?
January 20th, 2016 at 9:02 PM ^
Don't you dare! When my time comes, I want to go to Bolivia for something I actually said.
January 20th, 2016 at 8:33 PM ^
Hey do you think Freep would report something anecdotal and one-sided that might make us look bad? Yeah you're right, probably not...
January 20th, 2016 at 8:41 PM ^
exactly what his coach and Swenson said to them (or Scout). Since our coaches can't comment, which was stated in the article, then this article is actually pretty fair game to write. It is a story, thyat is not debateable.
January 20th, 2016 at 8:44 PM ^
since a story that will forever be "he said/she said" can only be discussed by one party, then it is totally fair game to write?

Not picking on you, but by the tone of your reply I believe you are disappointed in M at this point.
I am not thrilled with what appears to have happened with Swenson, but I am not that concerend either. I believe the coaches gave him feedback in a reasonable time frame. I don't have any facts, that is just what I am choosing to believe. But either way, I am OK.
For the people that are upset at the appearance of what happened here, what is more important to you? Winning with marginal integrirty, but still top 10% of BCS in terms of intregrity or winning with complete integrity? Because if you go back the last 15 years here are the National Championship teams:
AL
OSU
FSU
Auburn
FL
LSU
TX
Miami
OK.
Who out of the last 15 years would you say has completely played by the rules? OK? Maybe, but that would be the only team that probably did not play on the shady side.
Winning and integrity don't have to be mutually exclusive, but I don't see vandy, NU, Stanford or ND in the list above. I know they had good teams and got close, but they didn't win.
I personally believe until we replace the NCAA, Harbaugh has to push the envelope a little bit.
January 20th, 2016 at 9:15 PM ^
Three weeks or so before signing day is not a reasonable time frame for a 17 year old kid to completely re-evalutate his entire next 4 years.
Wins come and go but you can't trade back for integrity.
And yes, I'd rather cheer for decent people, then some that are slightly better because they're immoral.
January 20th, 2016 at 9:29 PM ^
So it's not 3 weeks. Get your facts straight before you start openly complaining.
January 20th, 2016 at 9:32 PM ^
you are really going to rely on that technicality to call someone out? Sure he might have until April, but each of the schools he might be interested might be full up as of signing day. Lets not pretend like this isnt really late in the process.

January 20th, 2016 at 11:24 PM ^
Sure spots totally won't be picked over. It's not like he was already forced out due to lack of spots at his first choice.
January 21st, 2016 at 1:13 AM ^
All the top tier schools are almost full, and its very difficult to find a good fit with coaches, localtion, academics, football etc. Thats a 'fucking fact'.
Try to put yourself in someone elses shoes for once in your life.
January 20th, 2016 at 9:35 PM ^
Hopefully there'll be plenty of D2 offers still open if he waits that long...and if not he still has the option to sign an LOI at a D3 school and pay his own way.
