Swenson decommit: more info ...

Submitted by Blue Crab on

OK, don't shoot the messenger ... just 1-side of the story and just reporting ... doesn't look great tho

“Coach Drevno just said they’re trying to put the best recruiting class they can together,” Molinari said. “They’ve gained a ton of interest from a lot of recruits they never thought they’d have interest from. It wasn’t just a coach Drevno thing. They sat down and thought there wasn’t going to be one for Erik at this point — not a full scholarship, a preferred walk-on.”

I'm on the side that says the coaches told Swenson his offer was performance related. They wanted to honor the existing Michigan offer (not Hoke's offer) and give the kid a chance to improve.

I'm also not pleased that it took this long to tell him that he didn't earn the offer.

I'm not inclined to believe the staff dumped him because other guys started showing interest.

It's a contract, you get a scholarship two years in advance you better progress and get better, if not you're likely to play for a lower level program. It's a very competitive environement where you have to do well or get cut. I got cut from my freshman baseball team, a bummer, but I wasn't good enough.

Reason 1. Ethics. What others do shouldn't dictate what you do.

Reason 2. Timing. The kid clearly thought he still had a spot as of Jan. 3rd.

Reason 3. In the real world or when applying to college, it is very rare for the employer/university to rescind an offer. While not considered "the right thing to do"  it is much more common for a potential candidate to accept an offer and then move on. The reason is because, for the individual, nothing is lost, they get a better deal. If an employer were to say, actually we found someone else, that looks terrible and can affect company perception. So if for no other reason, you should care that other recruits will see this and wonder what a Michigan scholarship offer is worth.

He has 3 weeks minimum to find another college. Kid is going to be fine. He's going to go to school and get an education for FREE! It's not like Harbaugh cut him 2 years in....it's not signing day.

That is true.  It is not like the kid is severely damaged by this as he has options to elite colleges with a full ride.

We don't know all of the info - were grades part of the issue, etc...?

However, this still looks bad, to pull an offer this late in the game, especially with a kid who stuck by the school during the dark period of Hoke's firing.

Would a preferred walk-on spot even be possible? I thought I remember hearing a while back that once a scholarship offer has been made the school can no longer accept the athlete as a preferred walk-on, but I could be mistaken.

They offered a preferred walk-on spot, so they didn't "kill his dream of playing at Michigan" like some have said. They gave him an offer according to what they perceived his value to be.

Not picking on you, but by the tone of your reply I believe you are disappointed in M at this point.

I am not thrilled with what appears to have happened with Swenson, but I am not that concerend either. I believe the coaches gave him feedback in a reasonable time frame.  I don't have any facts, that is just what I am choosing to believe. But either way, I am OK.

For the people that are upset at the appearance of what happened here,  what is more important to you?  Winning with marginal integrirty, but still top 10% of BCS in terms of intregrity  or winning with complete integrity?  Because if you go back the last 15 years here are the National Championship teams:

AL

OSU

FSU

Auburn

FL

LSU

TX

Miami

OK.

Who out of the last 15 years would you say has completely played by the rules? OK? Maybe, but that would be the only team that probably did not play on the shady side.

Winning and integrity don't have to be mutually exclusive, but I don't see vandy, NU, Stanford or ND in the list above. I know they had good teams and got close, but they didn't win.

I personally believe until we replace the NCAA, Harbaugh has to push the envelope a little bit.

Three weeks or so before signing day is not a reasonable time frame for a 17 year old kid to completely re-evalutate his entire next 4 years.

Wins come and go but you can't trade back for integrity.

And yes, I'd rather cheer for decent people, then some that are slightly better because they're immoral.

It's not a technicality it's a fucking fact. You can refuse to accept it all you want but it remains a fact. Plenty of schools are still chasing recruits well after signing day,us for example the last few years. The kid has plenty of time to find a spot somewhere.
