Saban: Satellite camps like U-M's are 'ridiculous'

Submitted by umbig11 on

We knew they would be crying foul. Now Saban joins in.

"If we're all going to travel all over the country to have satellite camps, you know, how ridiculous is that?" Saban said Tuesday evening, before the Crimson Caravan stop in Huntsville, Ala., as reported by al.com. "I mean, we're not allowed to go to all-star games, but now we're going to have satellite camps all over the country. So it doesn't really make sense."

up tempo offenses.   He opposes anything that will upset the roll tide applecart.  He tops recruiting services year after year and its safe to say his team's are the most talented.  Now some new guys in the bgtn of all places are upsetting things.  New sheriff in town!

I think Harbaugh should HOST a camp (not just be a "guest speaker") both in East Lansing and just inside Ohio. Both are within the 50 mile radius of campus, and would give a big fuck you to Dantonio and Meyer

After all the recruiting shenanigans in the SEC and he is whining about Legitimate football camps in their geographic area. Someone give little Nicky a box of Kleenex.

I don't know how it doesn't make sense, Nick.

1) Set up camp basically next door to schools that - by their conference rules - cannot do the same in your backyard.

2) Invite kids who might normally only consider those schools whose backyard you now are inhabiting

3) Evaluate kids and make offers / recruit as you see fit

4) ????

5) Profit.

I suppose I don't see what Nick Saban sees, or perhaps I do and am indifferent to the idea that it irritates him.  Hmmmmm.

What he meant:

1. "Darn, I wish we had thought of this." Tells his aides in the athletic department to start gearing up for this next year.

Thats half of it.  The other half is, crap, i will have to start doing something again and get off my a$$?  I cant just say, We are Bama!  Roll Tide!  Look what we did the last decade!

He is still going to recruit well off past merrits, but this is something he sees more people doing in the future, cutting into his recruits - unless he gets off his a$$ and does the same, or counters it with another method.

are they for recruits only?  Or can a 12 year old kid meet an incredibly successful football coach and learn something from him?  Where he otherwise wouldn't be able to because his family isn't going to send him a thousand miles to go to camp in Ann Arbor?

Ostensibly we know what this is all about, but there are kids who will benefit.  It's not like oversigning and obscure grey shirts where a coach screws up a kids life.

Saban's bitching is to remove the unfair advantage.  I'm sure there will be some meeting in a few weeks in Atlanta to remove the restriction.  Because these multi million dollar brats (SEC coaches) can't be one upped by some Yankee

Nick Saban thinks all things that are a threat to his hegemony over college football (satellite camps, restrictions on cutting players, spread offenses, up-tempo offenses) are ridiculous.

If i were a coach that could recruit lazily off past merrits and still land top 2 classes every year, i would complain about this too.  I would have to work as hard now as i did 10 years earlier when i was next to irrelevant.

Now he will have to pick up his game just to stay the course.  Cant just say "Roll Tide" and land a 5 star.  Aggressive, ambitioius competition is what he sees in the future. Time for Saban to put in the work he once did?

I love seeing Nick Satan eat his own bull shit!! Nice job Penn State for identifying the loop hole. Michigan for taking it to the next level.

Suck it Saban! At least we are not over signing kids and kicking them to the curb like trash.

Saban is such a baby, he finds no problem with "Roster mangement" but those darn hurry up offenses and satellite camps are not fair.

I'd rather my coaches travel and see more kids in person and get a good evaluation of them, than sign 130 kids and slowly cut them until you hit 85.

Nick wears his heart on his sleeve. Jim is great but we are some years away. Nick needs to worry about why his coaching style is not working with the athletes he is bringing in. His top players are leaving early and he was just embarresed by the B1G.

As oversigning.

No wait, less ridiculous. Less ridiculous than oversigning.

Sucks to have rules that pit you at a disadvantage relative to other conferences, eh Saban?
