I remember asking about the lights in a thread during the summer...thought the TV networks paid to have them brought in on a per game basis. If this is true, why would the Regents want to pay for installation?

...they brought in trucks that were basically cherry-pickers with a bank of lights on top. I don't think that solution would work around the new structures.

The past couple of years for fall 3:30 games, they've had bigger but fewer spot/flood lights on top of the structures, but I doubt those would be sufficient for an entire 8pm game. They've also completed the electrical upgrades that would allow for better lights.

These permanent fixtures would be top-of-the-line and professionally installed to give the best lighting conditions for football (and hockey!) for a long time to come.

I believe the networks pay for the temporary lights and although they give off enough light to play a game they don't give off the desired light for TV.  By doing this they would have lighting experts construct the lights to give the desired effect rather than temp. lights being thrown up just to get some light in the stadium

The temporary lights aren't that bright.  It was pretty dark on the field during the overtimes of the Braylonfest game.  While that arguably added to the atmosphere, it's not great for player safety.  Also, I'd imagine that the TV networks are not happy having to do this every time when just about every other program has put permanent lights in.  There are some areas where we can take a stand and say "We're Michigan," but this may not be one of them, especially now that we're going to play the occasional night game.

With the level of hype for the ND-UM night in 2012 and the $$$$ that are sure to follow, I'm willing to bet that permanent lights will be put in for us to have at least one night game a year.  Brandon is a savvy businessman and marketer and understands how much a night game at the Big House can further promote this program.

It's all about National TV audiences. Only night games usually do that. It would be pretty stupid to install lights for just one game a year. Temporary lights would make sense in that case. Look for more unless the first one proves to be logistically a nightmare.

The only thing better than watching Denard run 87 yards in the daylight, would be to watch him run 87 yards in the night....with lights shining on him as if it were daylight.

between the new sky boxes and the giant HD scoreboards to be installed. That should make for one hell of a well lit playing surface (spf 45 may be required to be on the field)

Weren't the temporary lights they brought in stationed about the 10 yard line, which is now blocked by two very large buildings?  Wouldn't permanent lighting be necessary for any late late kickoffs in November, not to mention night games, as I don't think we could use the same setup previously used?

help in games when the weather isn't so great and TV doesn't bring in portable lights because they didn't think it would be necessary only to have November roll into to Michigan in late September.

This gives more creedence to the fishwrap in CBus saying that the Big T-E-N agreed to keep The Game at the end of the season because not only would it occassionaly be a night game, but it would also be making its way to the Big Ten Network to continue to line the coffers.  It's all making sense now...  Even The Mouse has nothing on Jim Delany...

For a league named for 10 teams that has 11 now and 12 next year, I'd say for the right price that "rule" of no November night games becomes more of a "guideline" when appropriate.  Why is that rule in place - I'm curious, not a smartass (in this instance)?

I'm absoultely for the lights.  Take a game or two a year and put it as a night game.  I really can't wait til next year's ND game.  The success of that game will be noticed and hopefully we will schedule a few more over the next season or two.

It seems the board is in tune with what the A.Department needs to keep with with the wanna be's in college sports. So get the lights add the 5,000 seats, replace the scoreboards, hell dome the thing if you need to. Just get the best recruits in and let them fight for scholly spots.

Perhaps this was planned with the press box design. You know all that opaque glass on the new press boxes? Imagine them flipping up and lights extending out to shine down like The Sun. Woo!! Doubt it's really realistic, but it would be cool.

I know that the stadium renovations included putting everything in for the lights except for the lights themselves. At ND, NBC paid for the lighting to be installed. U of M would like to have someone else pay for the lights if possible, but if a network doesn't do it, Brandon will still have it done. We are an up and coming team. Night games=national audience=recruiting.

Brandon will be RR's biggest help with getting this team back to where they once were. I still think that if we win 8-9 games this season Brandon needs to extend RR's contract and then all the haters won't have anything to talk about.
