Recap of Yesterday's Game by Matt Hayes in Sporting News

Submitted by MGoUberBlue on

The national attention that Hoke and his crew have brought to our once proud team is simply ugly:

http://www.sportingnews.com/ncaa-football/story/2014-10-25/michigan-sta…

The last six paragraphs are conclusive of the overall opinion of this coach:

"Just like Michigan under Hoke.

Late in the game, as Michigan faced a third-and-goal from the MSU 1 to end an 11-quarter touchdown drought against the Spartans, tailback De’Veon Smith scored on a dive that was later called a dead play by officials.

Hoke and offensive coordinator Doug Nussmeier ran 15 yards on the field; Hoke pushing up his right hand to signal restart the play clock, and Nussmeier with both arms in the air signaling touchdown.

Discombobulated to the bitter end.

“I don’t think that's fair to say (that Michigan quit),” Hoke said. “These guys played their asses off.”

Then got the rivalry shoved right up it"

Ouch.......that would really hurt.

I'm glad Sparty slappies are still butthurt over Hart's little brother comments 7 years ago.  He went 4-0 over you, he can talk shit.  They really need to learn how to handle success.

I think it just means the guy is a dick. I'm sure there are 30-40 coaches objectively described as "a dick" that are career losers in FBS football.

I don't think it necessarily hurts or anything, but Dantonio could win one game a season from here on out and still be a dick. He'd also be one if he had any other job, it's just his personality.

Dantonio is 6-2 against Michigan.  All the talking heads want to accentuate how much better MSU is than UM, so they start, not at some logical point, like Dantonio's first season, or a ten year stretch, but with Dantonio's first win against Michigan.  6-1 is more impressive than 6-2 or 6-4.  Dantonio is 0-1 against Carr, 3-0 against Rodriguez, and now 3-1 against Hoke.

I don't get what you are stating.  So the "talking heads" are saying that under the current MSU coaching regime, Staee is 6-2  against Michigan.  Where's the selective bias in that?  Or are you going to resort to the tired old meme of "Well in the last 2000 years, we're 1900-100 vs Sparty".  That stuff is the refuge of people who can't accept the current reality and consequently can't change and adapt and get better.

Do you honestly think any rival to a team coached by Jim Harbaugh doesn't think Harbaugh is a dick? And yet almost all M fans are clamoring for Jim to come here and be our savior. If it takes being a dick to rivals to instill confidence in your team and it leads to results on the field, then I am all for it.

are in the eye of the beholder.  I had a business lunch recently with a couple guys in Pittsburgh I had just met.  They did not know my background and we talked some NFL, they being Steelers fans.  Tom Brady's name came up and they both commented on what an asshole he is.  This from fans of a team quarterbacked by Ben Roethlisburger!  I giggled a bit, but figured my business interests trumped my affiliations and said nothing.  I wondered what they thought of Joe Paterno.

The little brother comment was only a fraction of the article and is only a small part of the situation with MSU.

The spike - WOW - that was a completely stupid and immature idea.  Brady or another coach should have nipped immediately.

I am embarassed that even happened.   Even my 10 year old knows not to act like that.

This is program is getting what it deserves now - including articles like this.

Who gives a shit. If it wasn't the spike Dantonio would come up wth some other bs. For some reason he refuses to act like a successful team and has some deep seeded need to play "underdog" or disrespected. The media loves making a story about nothing.

I recall a spike, stake, spear, being planted in Michigan's field, FSU did it.  I thought it a dick move.  ABC ate it up.  Thought when they cut out some sod from the field that was a dick move too.  ABC ate it up.  Of course FSU won so nobody thought it inappropriate.

Wow. So it's come to this? Patting ourselves on the back for a comment made 7 years ago that Dantonio uses as a motivational tool? The reality is we lost in another horrific manner. And we've lost the last 6/7 games since that comment. Instead of focusing on and accepting how awful our program has become and figuring out how to fix it, you just go back to the nostalgia machine and revisit something that happened 7 years ago. Companies, species, organizations, etc that adapt to the new reality succeed, the ones that don't, that keep to the past, become dinosaurs.

No.  Not at all.

His money quote is insightful:

"Here’s how Hoke saw it: “I think I was aware that something happened. But I’m not fully aware.”

This, ladies and gentlemen, is the Michigan Wolverines under Brady Hoke."

This is what we have been saying for months now.  He  called it accurately.

Hard to argue with much in there, but it still hurt to read.  And for anyone who has been a coach on any level, it's not hard to understand Dantonio.  Who are the most fun teams to beat?  The ones who think they are better than you.  And after MSU has owned them for years, UM still shows up and plants a spear (or giant pair of scissors, that's what it looked like to me) on their field.  Dantonio must be appalled and shaking his head at Michigan's lack of respect.  I think Dantonio is a jerk, but understand what he is talking about here.

Hart did and then we get a sophomoric stun like Boldens how would any coach react? A coach would use whatever the opponent gives him in motivating his team.

The reality is this. if Dantonio and staff were coaching Michigan players and Hoke and staff coaching MSU players the result would have been reversed. Michigan 35 MSU 11.

The Michigan program cannot go any lower and yet we have an AD playing his fiddle while Rome burns.

First off, a Michigan State player (I think Javon Ringer?) was the first to bring up "little brother" in the week leading up to the 2007 UM/MSU game.  In response to a question he said, "We're not their little brother, " or something like that.

Secondly, Mark Dantonio started all of this bullshit in 2007 when he, with a dumbass smirk on his face, asked if there should be a moment of silence for Michigan after he was told the score of the Michigan/App State game.

Mark Dantonio is a fucking asshole.  A straight-up, 10-year-old-in-a-man's-body, fucking piece of shit.  Fuck him.

And he acts like and 10 year old. Does that make it OK for our players to act like 8 years olds and eveyrone on this website whine like a 9 year old?

All those comments are old ones now The fact that he can still get traction out of them is not only a testament to their program, but to our psyche as a fanbase as well.

We should not give 2 shits what that guy says or what words he uses as motiviation.  He can say do, whatever he wants.  He can say we club baby seals.  Who cares?  Who really cares?

This program, this team , this staff, us fans - should be able to rise so far above it that it is lost in the haze below.  But instead, we focus and we nit pick and we whine just like those Spartan fans, players and coaches we seem to love to hate.

Rise above it guys. Focus on this team and what we need to do to fix it.

Dantonio is whining about a game he won and it is being seen as a positive by a consensus of the nation's media.  That is the extent to which David Brandon has turned the football program into a joke.

When a competent AD hires an elite coach, that coach needs to make a "best of Dantonio" video, supported by tape of MSU players celebrating first downs and tackles against Michigan like they had just won a National Championship.  Then, it should be the "Friday Night Movie" before every game against Sparty until Michigan regains their rightful dominance in the series.

It should be played on a loop in the weight room and locker room every day until the players play with the physicality and attitude required to return the program to a respectable and competitive level. Right now they are a joke

Just show the video clip of the MSU player trying to twist Denard's head off and paralyze him for life.

That would make me run through a wall.

The brilliance of Dantonio is that he has managed to consistently instill near-criminal behavior in his teams, yet still hide behind the facade of perpetual victim.

Non issue if this stunt doesn't happen.  Dantonio didn't give them the spike, instead,  they gave Dantonio the spike.   I guess it worked,  but not for the team intended.

The problem now — and for Michigan, for years to come — is the guy on the other side of this rivalry made it patently clear what it means to play football at Michigan State.

Yeah, it was not the best written thing on the face of the Earth, but the issue of programs having a bearing and direction is a pretty interesting one to bring up. I will say, even if he's done it with a permanent grouchface and unappealing disposition, Dantonio has given MSU a bearing and direction. That's rather what we seem to be missing - to me, we wander through the woods and have been for quite some time now.

Look at the substance of the article.  Sure, Matt Hayes is a dick and Dantonio is an asshole, but we cannot teach 4-star recruits how to block, tackle, throw or catch a pass or run with any degree of competence.  Consequently he beats the crap out of UM with inferior talent.

I'm so goddamn sick of the media. Yes, Dantonio is kicking Michigan's ass. Fine. But all fucking day yesterday, on College GameDay and then during the game, they continue to replay the Hart comment and Dantonio's rant, 100% context-free. They never show Dantonio's "moment of silence" comment that the Michigan players were mocking, and they never show the entirety of Hart's statement. Dantonio is a spiteful, classless bag of shit, and Hart was a 21 year-old kid doing something 21 year-old kids do. Instead he's made out to be the asshole and the initiator of all this, and Dantonio is protrayed as the brave coach who took a stand against the big meanies at Michigan. It doesn't change a single thing on the field, but it's a bullshit false narrative that I'm tired of hearing.

mackbru

October 26th, 2014 at 1:15 PM ^

Most of the MSU players said they weren't even aware of the stake thing until after the game. So Dantonio giving it as a motivation was 100 percent bullshit. He just takes every opportunity to stoke the whole class-warfare thing he's so obsessed with. It's his motivational took. But it just makes him look like a petulant, little-dick teen who for some reason, despite his great success, still harbors an acute inferiority complex. It's just so tacky and MSU, whose players annually commit personal fouls/targeting penalties, who repeatedly endanger other players, and then CELEBRATE their actions. How's that's not far more disrespectful?

Every team everywhere occasionally has players who say or do stupid things, and Michigan had had a few. Hart said the "little brother" thing like a THOUSAND years ago. The Michigan "program," as Dantonio calls it, never once denigrated MSU or rubbed its nose in losses. Dantonio is literally manufacturing this stuff. I I'd love for him to site a single example in which Michigan coaches or reps insulted MSU. And writing "Go Blue" in East Lansing was silly, but not an insult. Dantonio is a great coach with no class. And he reinforces a certain MSU stereotype.

M-Dog

October 26th, 2014 at 1:24 PM ^

You're missing the point.  Dantonio doesn't care whether he's right or wrong.  What he is doing is working.  There's a purpose to it.  There is no way he's going to stop doing it.

If we want it to stop, we have to put a stop to it.

I guarantee that if he says these things after a beatdown loss he'll just look like a butt-hurt whiner, and he'll be universally mocked for doing it.

Dantonio doesn't care about how it looks, whether "he looks like he's been there", the fact that only he still thinks of MSU as "little brother", etc.  As M-dog says, all he cares about is that it works.  One team wins.  The other loses.

Sure, I think Dantonio is an A-1 asshole.  But, he doesn't care about that either.  He cares about winning.  Maybe someone in Ann Arbor can take some notes?
