If one of MSU's enemies were…

If one of MSU's enemies were giving them deliberately terrible advice to make them look as bad as possible, that person would have a hard time topping what MSU is actually doing to itself.

Insurance?

Are schools allowed to buy injury insurance for players?  Wonder how much that would cost, with the relatively small risk of a career-ending injury for a bowl game versus the possibly huge losses if that injury occurs?

If only...

If only teams who play perfect games can complain about refereeing, then no one would/could ever complain about the refs.  Of course, if Michigan had minimized mistakes then the blatantly unfair calls would have had less impact.  But the fact is, they made mistakes, more then I wish they would have, but despite that, they were in a position to win the game and the refereeing had a huge impact on them losing.

I lost several good (or so I

I lost several good (or so I thought) friends after we went to college -- me to UM and they to MSU.  I'd visit them on weekends, and all they would want to talk about is how lame UM is, how Bo Schembechler is a jerk who can't win bowl games, how many Rhodes Scholars they have, etc.  It was so annoying.  I would never bring stuff up, but eventually just decided to become antagonistic.  Ultimately I told them that they were Burger King and we were McDonald's, and decided it was not longer worth it.  And i think they represent many MSU fans.

Yes, that is the worst thing

I remember reading about that.  Other schools were cancelling outdoor practices because of the weather, and he had a kid videotaping up in a tower.  And of course, didn't take any responsibility.  Not sure if he turned purple and called the kid a "f*#@ing moron" after he hit ground, but wouldn't be surprising.

Ole Miss

I hear Laremy Tunsil's stepdad released a text message showing that Tunsil got a free pack of Bic pens from the bookstore while he was a student.  Finally Ole Miss is going to get into trouble.

This would be so cool....

If he would adopt the underhand style and start shooting 80% from the line.  He'd be so, so, so much more valuable.

Emailing compliance

I love that idea, thousands of people emailing Ole Miss compliance letting them know that the emailer has evidence of a recruiting violation, and attaching the already-viral video of Tunsil admitting to taking money from a coach.  Hilarious.

Perspective

This might be kinda bad, but at least the satellite camp issue is solved, thank god.

Running Scared

This song works well (and in a pretty funny way, IMO) if you imagine the singer is an SEC coach worrying about Harbaugh stealing his recruits.

(sorry, not sure how to embed)

What is really important You can take his satellite camps, but don't even try and touch his Rutgers and his BTN profits.
No Surprise

The article just shows again what a d-bag Sharp is, something all of us here have known for a long time.  And I got to read about Sharp without clicking on any of his articles.

DOOL and Hallmark Movies

In college I started watching Days of Our Lives, every day at 1pm.  My roommates mocked me, until they also got addicted.

More recently, I would watch a Hallmark movie with my wife and mock them for being so predictable, telling her everything that was going to happen in the whole movie within the first five minutes.  Then I realized that I was watching and mocking lots of Hallmark movies.  Last week I said "you have any Hallmark movies recorded?"

Bruno Kirby is dead?

I had no idea.  Explains why I haven't seen him in anything in oh, about 10 years

Extra Benefits?

How does this not violate the NCAA extra benefits rules (to the extent that anyone even enforces those anymore) if these benefits are only available to football players?  Didn't Kentucky have to make their basketball player resort open to some number of non-basketball players to ensure that they were only violating the spirit but not the letter of the extra benefits prohibition?

Inferiority Complex

I grew up a huge UM fan (but not an MSU hater), and went to UM as an undergrad in the 80's.  I lost good friends from high school who went to MSU.  I'd go visit them for a weekend, and all they wanted to talk about is how terrible UM is, how arrogant UM is, what a terrible coah Bo Schembechler was, etc.  This would be without me bringing anything up, and I would try to say "whatever" and change the subject to fun college things, but it was really like an angry obsession.  After a few times I gave up on the friendship, haven't talked to them since.

Notice on social media how MSU fans seems to be as concerned with ripping on Michigan as cheering on MSU.  That is annoying even when UM is kicking their butts on a regular basis.  But when they are winning?  Unbearable.

Pitch it to Breaston....

EVERY time a team runs that crazy play at the end of a game, my son has to listen to me blathering on about how if only Ecker had pitched it to Breaston.....

SOL -- Advisory Committee

This is the part that tells you what you need to know -- same old Lions. All people who have never made a good football hire trying to figure out how to get it right this time, instead of relying on people who have gotten it right before.  I'm not holding my breath.

Ouch

Just reading this ruined my night.  Can't even imagine what it would feel like to go through it.  I sometimes try and empathize and think of how I would feel if this happened to my kid....and I can't even go there.

I feel happy that Harbaugh

I feel happy that Harbaugh allowed Jon Falk to secure the Brown Jug.  But I feel sad that Falk, Harbaugh, and my kids are all going to die.

Can't Wait

This book will bring pre-season excitement to a crecendo.  Really can't wait to read it.

So Cool

That was one of the coolest, most positive things I've seen in a while.  Thanks for posting.

Paging Eric Cartman

This looks like something that would be on South Park, a parody of modern America.  If only that kid were overweight with a red shirt and blue hat with a yellow poof ball.

That....

was one of the most simultaneously appalling and hilarious videos I have ever seen.  I could not stop laughing, and yet I hated myself for laughing.

Timmy Lupus?

Is that you?

This....

is what ticked me off most about this fight.  Four to six years ago, it might have been an all-time classic.  I swore I'd never pay to see two fighters past their prime (Floyd barely past his prime, Manny well past his prime), but.....I did.  I hoped that the occasion would bring one last great fight out of both boxers.  Alas.....

Very Guilty Pleasures

I feel like these guilty pleasures aren't quite guilty (i.e., embarrassing) enough.  Here are the songs where I'm glad they come on the radio, I sing along to, but would be mortified if anyone saw/heard me:

Oldie:  Mandy, by Barry Manilow

Current:  Blank Space, by Taylor Swift

Silver Lining

I'm glad they didn't get Brown.  He is so good already that Beilein would have had a difficult time coaching him up.

Maximizing Talent

What I love seeing is players maximizing their talent, when (regardless of their level of achievement) you can't see them able to play any better.  When you see that, it's a testament to both the players' work ethic and attitude and to the coaches.  I don't recall feeling that way about anyone when Amaker was coach, but Beilein has had a lot of guys in that category.   And they range in achievement from the lower end (Bielfeldt) to the middle performers (Zach Novak and Jordan Morgan) to the high end performers (Trey Burke and Nik Stauskas).  As a fan and as a coach, it is really a joy to see guys maxing out their abilities.

Talk about roid rage.  God, I

Talk about roid rage.  God, I hate the Seahawks.

Or not....lol....I think my

Or not....lol....I think my comment jinxed the Seahawks.... :)

Might be best if Seattle just

Might be best if Seattle just scores on the first play and leaves more time....geez....

can't wait... For Big Ten media days when UM/Harbaugh get tons of attention while Dantonio steams.
OSU making a statement

It looks like OSU is going to make its best case to the Selection Committee that it deserves to be in the football playoff.  This is going to be a LONG day.

True, but....

While this is true, both Red Dawns were awesome.  I mean, Josh Peck in a co-starring role was pretty epic.  Anyway, I also like WD's original point.....John U earned the right to rally the troops while waving a giant "M" banner.

Question:  How many big

Question:  How many big embarrassments can one giant ego cause an athletic department in one year?  Answer, apparently, is still to be determined.

Corleone picture. That made me crack up at work...awesome
"I've had the time of my life..."

"And I owe it all to youuuuuu"

LOL

This literally made me laugh out loud.  Every time I think that it can't get more embarrassing to be a Michigan football fan, it gets more embarrassing to be a Michigan football fan.  Putting the hedge clippers into the field was stupid, but issue a formal apology?  Geez. As if they didn't have enough to laugh at us about in EL.

Brutal Article

Hard to argue with much in there, but it still hurt to read.  And for anyone who has been a coach on any level, it's not hard to understand Dantonio.  Who are the most fun teams to beat?  The ones who think they are better than you.  And after MSU has owned them for years, UM still shows up and plants a spear (or giant pair of scissors, that's what it looked like to me) on their field.  Dantonio must be appalled and shaking his head at Michigan's lack of respect.  I think Dantonio is a jerk, but understand what he is talking about here.

National Joke

During the highlight from the Arizona game, the announcer cracked a joke that if Michigan is looking for a coach after the season they should think about the Arizona coach given that his team is 5-1 and ranked 15th.  Brutal.

Not Sure I Can Take Anymore

I feel like I am watching a family member on live video getting bullied, by a bunch of guys who are really good at bullying and really enjoying it, and there is nothing I or anyone else can do to stop it.  I'm not sure I have the stomach to watch much more.

Some bad no calls today....

Anyone see what I thought were very late and cheap hits -- one that temporarily took Oklahoma's QB out of the game and one that took out Maryland's QB?  Both were cheap hits by defensive backs after the QBs were down, driving them into the ground.  They seemed obvious to me and both resulted in injured players and livid coaches.

The previously mentioned "non-catch' in the Purdue-Minnesota game at the goal line was an equally terrible call.

And in all three, the broadcasters took no position.  They are reporting just like political reporters...."the coach is upset and thought it should have been a penalty" without any opinion rendered.

Wow...just realized typing this I'm pretty crabby today.

The problem with giving credit...

The problem with giving credit for an action like this is that it reeks of insincerity.  It took a public and national butt-kicking for him to pay attention and he took this action the evening that a Regents meeting fueled speculation of his termination.  The problem with insincere actions taken in times of crisis is that you can't trust the person to continue acting this way once the crisis dies down.  (I work in Employee Relations, and it's a common occurrence that the employee's behavior improves when he is threatened with termination, but returns to the old ways once he gets comfortable again.)

Continued dog sympathies....

I had to put down my dog in 2009, and was there in the room with him.  To this day I have not been able to tell the story because as soon as I think about it my eyes fill with tears.  Crazy how attached we can get with a beloved pet.  Anyway, my sympathies.

It all started with....

His multimillion dollar stock portfolio all started with just a few hundred thousand dollars from Ed Martin.  It's the American dream.

Crabby Old Guys

Another memory -- sure others have a similar story.  Took my 10-year-old son to a game.  The old guy behind us kept yelling at him to sit down.  Every single person in front of us was standing.  I spent most of the game dealing with his threats to have us kicked out and trying to keep my son from being so worried that it destroyed his enjoyment of the game.

Always wonder why people like that go to games, how it can be fun.

Years Ago I Sat By....

Years ago I sat by a guy who, every game, would make an obscure rule reference, screaming at the referees that they misapplied that rule.  We would wait for the reference, and he never let us down.  We were in the 61st row in the end zone, but he apparently had the best view in the house.  It's been too long unfortunately, I can't remember any examples.  (No example makes this sort of a "cool story, bro" situation.)

Jim Harbaugh

I was in a political science class, when in walked Jim Harbaugh.  The class had already started, but he sat right in front of me.  He had wet hair and seemed in a hurry, so I surmised that he had just gotten out of practice.  He never returned to that class.  He was probably funneled into a kinesiology class (it was a 400 level polisci class).  If I could go back to that moment in a time machine, I would say "Jim, this might sound crazy, but don't ever make any public statements about Michigan's football players and academics. And someday Michigan is going to need a football coach and your name will be mentioned.  Please say yes."
