Possibility of redshirt for Peppers and Hoke's take on offensive line issues

Submitted by MeanJoe07 on

Here is some REAL information regarding Peppers.  According to Hoke, a Medical Redshirt may be a possibility.  I guess his injuries are severe enough for this to be in consideration.  Also, Hoke provides a theory (excuse?) about the Offensive Line's lack of development relative to other positions.  He thinks the lack of summer camps for lineman and teams "trying to recreate defense" may be the problem. Yikes... Link  Thoughts?

If Peppers can't play at all the rest of the season, might as well get a redshirt, but I don't think it will be needed either way. I highly doubt he's on campus for 5 years.

I'd much prefer Desmond Morgan to get a medical redshirt, and have seniors Morgan, Bolden, and Ross all playing together.

That's what I was thinking. Sure, no reason not to get it if you can, but he won't use it. I'm not of the extreme pessimist clique who think he's taking the field for any other NCAA team, but he'll definitely be doing it for an NFL team and very likely doing it early.

It pretty much sucks, though. Given that he won't be here five years, any time without him this year is just time without him, not time that we get to save him for his fifth year.

Oh, do I need to state clearly that it's my opinion next time so you're 100% sure that I'm not claiming I know the future? Sorry, I forgot being a sports comment thread people typically only deal in hard facts here, and that if you're going to give your opinion you need to announce it first.

Like I know what the guy's thinking or would purport to. I know he's already got NFL measurables and that he'd have to sit a year if he transferred, so it's my opinion that he goes to the NFL early and has little reason to screw around transferring.

I just read this post, so my tart retort will likely never be read, but seriously! Why take the time to type in a douche-y reply like that?! What's the GD point or benefit to yourself? Cleary, Peppers will either be as advertised and gone after 3 (4 tops) years, or he'll prove injury-prone and adequate at best, in which case we won't be SO thrilled about his getting a 5th year of eligibility. Of course there is ANOTHER possible scenario: he's injury-prone and adequate at best, then transfers somewhere else for his 5th year and becomes the star we'd hoped - previously Ryan Mundy, and now Josh Furman as examples of that delightful outcome!

yeah hell just redshirt this year if he cant play since hes a freshmen and then they worry about petitioning the ncaa for medical redshirt if need arises down the road (which is unlikely).  a guy like morgan obviously has to push paperwork through right away since he already played snaps his 4th yr

He can't "just redshirt" this year, as he has already played in a game. It only takes one snap to burn a redshirt. Now, if he were to stay at michigan for 3 more years, and wish to return for what would be a fifth, he could apply for (and likely receive) a medical hardship waiver (which is referred to as a medical redshirt colloquially).

A medical redshirt can be granted after any year, I believe at the discretion of the conference, if an injury is shown to have significantly, but not completely, reduced the number of games a player was able to compete in. It is available to any player who has not taken a redshirt for other reasons, and in essence makes a player eligible for a fifth year. For example, it was known BEFORE the beginning of the 2013 season that Devin Gardner would be eligible for the 2014 season, due to a medical redshirt being granted as a result of injuries in his freshman year. A medical hardship waiver is granted by the NCAA ( not the conference) giving a player a 6th year, and is rarely given. A player would have to miss the majority or total of multiple seasons due to injury for him to be eligible.

Certainly Peppers, were he not to play any more this season, would be eligible. Morgan likely as well, if he did not come back.

But redshirts and medical redshirts are two different things.  You have 5 years to play four seasons.  Playing a snap of any season counts as one season.  You can apply for a medical redshirt season, but that only takes place as a 5th or 6th year of eligibility after all other eligibility has expired.

Which in Peppers case, is probably moot.

You never complain about getting more guys back, but the youth looks pretty good at LB.  I have no quams with any of Bolden, Ross, RJS, Gedeon, & McCray.  There is a lot of talent that I'm excited to get some meaningful snaps.

That's wasn't a theory on lack of OL development. It was an excuse. It's what the staff is best at. I'm still puzzled about the Shane thing.

You don't see teams like Staee having problems developing young talent on the line or at any other position for that matter. Big fat excuse from the Hokester. Hoke is too loyal to Funk and all position coaches. The team badly needs an upgrade. Clearly the job is not getting done.

because all college coaches are in the same boat.

However, it is true that the emergence of 7 on 7 has reduced summer and off season development and camps for linemen. (e.g., Our high school team has Thursdays off for linemen in the summer, while the rest of the team is off playing 7 on 7.) Not to mention most camps do not have the kids in pads and hitting (most likely due to liability reasons). Even at the college level, the kids can voluntarily play 7 on 7 themselves with no coaches watching and work on the playbook, pass timing, coverages, etc., but how do the o-linemen and d-linemen work on foot and hand placement, pulling, and leverage, etc. in a realistic situation if they can't suit up?

Either way, maybe spring ball helps teams with a large number of southern recruits, but otherwise everyone is in the same situation.

What a ridiculous comment. No one was wondering about the failed progress of linemen nationwide; they were wondering about Michigan. It's not like 7-on-7 is a Michigan fad.

That might hold up if every linemen in the country was underdeveloped but spoiler alert....that's not the case. That was one of the lamest excuses in a long line of lame excuses from BH.

guess thats what happens when you get a nervous goofy coach with zero public speaking ability grasping at straws 3-4 times/ week.  im sure fred flintstone would drop multiple gems like that each presser if not for platitudes and practiced talking in circles

"Offensive line development has been slower, Hoke said, and he said part of that might be attributed to a change in summer camp formats."

Was Michigan singled out for this change in summer camp formats? I can only assume that this change was made for us and us alone given that we seem to be struggling far more than others relative to our incoming players star rankings.

Well for those of you who think we get the raw end of the deal from the B1G and the NCAA it looks like Hoke has confirmed it.  Every other D1 team in the nation operates under one set of summer camp rules and we, apparently, have another.

Couldnt possibly be coaching so that must be it.

What do you mean our OL is not developing, you mean these 4/5 stars won't be 1st round picks???

Newsflash, what positions since the Hokester has been here HAVE been developing - easy answer NONE!!!

Why in the hell is Funk still here?  Does he have polaroids or snapchat pictures of Hoke and Brandon - only possible explanantion!

Even if Hoke sincerely believes this explanation, he doesn't seem to grasp the fact that it will sound like nonsensical argle-bargle without a lot more information than he's providing.

I'm still shaking my head over this, and I'm one of those who doesn't get concerned over what he says at pressers. This might explain a lot about what's been going on.

Hoke should be pointing to his horrible O-line coach Funk for poor line play and not lack of time in the summer.  It's amazing other teams have no issues and have less 4 star players at the position.

The talk of getting Peppers a redshirt really now makes no sense.  Why didn't he come out with this earlier?!?  Hoke could've kept the fan base happy and the rumors down.  If the kid is hurt and you can get the redshirt do it!  Don't play around and send a kid out on the field that isn't 100%.

Short answer-no. Long answer, maybe, but highly unlikely, and not tied to his injury. He could theoretically have a family issue, precluding his parents from traveling and/or requiring his presence, and he could then transfer to a school within 100 miles of his home and petition the NCAA to be immediately eligible. Again, has nothing to do with his current injury, or his ability to obtain a "medical redshirt" down the line.

The interesting case would be if he were to transfer, use next year as his redshirt year, still have three years of eligibility remaining, and then petition for a medical waiver do an additional year. Typically to get a sixth year, the athlete has to lose 2 years to injury(ies), but it would have been approximately 1/2 of one game played, and he may have a case to get the extra year. Of course, no one expects him to actually stay in school until his eligibility is exhausted, so it is a moot point.
